A hard disk drive flexure assembly includes an insulative base layer over a metal substrate, a first conductive layer over the base layer, a plurality of electrical pads each comprising a second conductive layer over the first conductive layer, a pre-formed bump of solder material positioned over each pad, and a conductive cover layer over at least a portion of each pre-solder bump. With the conductive cover layer, e.g., gold, solder material from each pre-solder bump is inhibited from transferring to a probe during electrical check of the flexure, the solder material is inhibited from oxidizing, and solder splash is inhibited. These techniques are especially relevant with narrow, high-density, small pitch electrical pads.

A hard disk drive flexure assembly includes a base layer, a conductive layer, a plurality of electrical pads over the conductive layer, and a sidewall layer including sidewalls on each side of and extending higher than a corresponding electrical pad. Pre-solder bumps are formed between the sidewalls and over each pad. Use of sidewalls prevents the pre-solder bumps from undesirably bridging to an adjacent electrical pad and forming a short circuit, which might otherwise cause head-gimbal assembly (HGA) manufacturing failures and consequent increased cost. These techniques are especially relevant with narrow, high-density, small pitch electrical pads.

A hard disk drive flexure assembly includes a metal substrate having a gap between a root side and a slider side, a base layer and a first conductive layer that each bridges the gap, and a plurality of electrical pads where the pads extend to the slider side of the flexure so as to positionally overlap with a slider end edge and corresponding slider electrical pads. Pre-solder bumps are formed on each pad. This configuration facilitates formation of a functional solder bridge between the flexure and the slider because the melted solder can readily spread on the extended flexure pad surface and reach the slider pad when the pre-solder bump is heated, as the pad material has higher solder wettability than that of a cover layer material. These techniques are especially relevant with narrow, high-density, small pitch electrical pads.

A magnetic storage device comprising a magnetic disk and a carriage arm rotatably movable relative to the magnetic disk. A suspension assembly of the magnetic storage device is coupled to the carriage arm and comprising a flexure. The magnetic storage device additionally comprises a slider comprising a read-write head. The flexure comprises a fixed portion co-movably fixed relative to the carriage arm and a hinge portion to which the slider is co-movably fixed. The hinge portion is swayable relative to the fixed portion. An actuator system of the magnetic storage device is coupled to the fixed portion of the flexure and the hinge portion of the flexure. The actuator system is operable to sway the hinge portion relative to the fixed portion. The magnetic storage device includes a repolarization enhancing feature adjacent the actuator system.

A heat assisted magnetic recording head gimbal assembly comprises a light source unit, a heat assisted magnetic recording head, a suspension, an actuator, and a slider. The light source unit comprises a light emitting element and a submount. The suspension comprises a load beam and a flexure movably coupled with the load beam. The actuator is deformably coupled to the flexure. The slider is supported by the suspension and coupled to the flexure and the light source unit. The slider includes the heat assisted magnetic recording head. First and second solders or conductive adhesives are positioned on opposite longitudinal sides of the light source unit, so that the first solder or conductive adhesive electrically and mechanically connects the submount to a wiring supplying power, while the second solder or conductive adhesive electrically and mechanically connects the light emitting element to the wiring.

A heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) head gimbal assembly (HGA) protects the associated HAMR heating source from unwanted contact, such as from contact with an adjacent HAMR laser in response to a shock event. The HGA is configured such that the distance between the flexure and the top of a load beam flange is greater than the height of a submount associated with the heating source, and the height of the submount may also be greater than the height of the heating source, thus protecting against contact between adjacent heating sources.

In a heat-assisted magnetic recording hard disk drive, one or more thermally conductive features are incorporated to assist with dissipation of heat from a laser module that comprises a laser and a submount. The submount may be coupled to the slider with solder covering a wider adhesive area for enhanced conduction of heat away from the laser module and to the slider, one or both of the submount and the laser may include a surface coating that increases the thermal radiation of the corresponding component, and/or one or both of the submount and the laser may include fins configured to transfer heat from the corresponding component. Further, a HAMR HGA may be configured such that the submount is coupled directly to the suspension flexure using a thermally conductive material, for conduction of heat away from the laser module and to the flexure.

In a heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) hard disk drive, a heat-dissipating head slider assembly is described in which the slider is stepped on the disk-opposing side and a HAMR laser module is mounted on the lower surface to assist with dissipation of heat from the laser. The lower surface is a surface of the main body of the slider and is composed primarily of a first material, and the slider may include a heat-dissipating plate that forms the higher stepped surface, where the plate is composed of a second material that has a higher thermal conductivity than the first material, such as silicon.

Provided is a structure of a heat assisted magnetic recording head gimbal assembly that allows common inexpensive TE-mode LDs to be utilized. The heat assisted magnetic recording head gimbal assembly comprises: a light source unit having a light emitting element mounted on a parabolic solid submount; a heat assisted magnetic recording head comprising a magnetic recording element, a read element, a near field transducer, and a waveguide for guiding light from the light emitting element into the near field transducer; a slider including the heat assisted magnetic recording head and which flies above a disk; and a suspension for supporting the slider. The light emitting element of the light source unit is an edge-emitting LD and the light source unit is arranged on the opposite side of an bearing surface of the slider such that the light emitting surface of the light emitting element faces the slider, apertures are created in the suspension, and the slider is connected to the suspension in a way that a part of the light source unit penetrates through the apertures of the suspension.

Provided is a magnetic head slider apparatus that can minimize a change in a roll angle caused by an impact force even with a submount mounted on a side surface thereof and achieve steady flying with the roll angle minimized. A dimple position and a pressure center position of a lifting force are moved in a slider width direction to thereby align a center of mass of a slider having a submount including a laser diode mounted on a side surface thereof, the dimple position, and the pressure center position of the lifting force with each other. This provides a magnetic head slider and a suspension thereof, and a magnetic disk drive apparatus offering higher recording density and higher reliability.

A hard-disk drive. The hard-disk drive includes a head-slider configured to fly in proximity with a recording surface of a magnetic-recording disk, and a fly-height variation compensator configured to generate a signal for compensating variation in fly height of a write element of the head-slider. The head-slider further includes the write element configured to write data to the magnetic-recording disk, a fly-height-adjustment heating element configured to displace the write element towards the magnetic-recording disk, and a position-adjustment heating element configured to displace the write element in at least a direction perpendicular to a flying direction. The fly-height variation compensator is further configured to add the signal for compensating variation in fly height to a control signal for output to the fly-height-adjustment heating element.

There is provided a thermally assisted magnetic recording device capable of preventing collision between a thermally assisted magnetic recording head and a disk due to thermal deformation of a near-field transducer. The thermally assisted magnetic recording device includes a temperature sensor for measuring the temperature in the vicinity of the near-field transducer, a table that stores the relationship between temperature and deformation in the vicinity of the near-field transducer, and a control unit. The control unit calculates the deformation in the vicinity of the near-field transducer, from the temperature measured by the temperature sensor and the relationship between temperature and deformation stored in the table. Then, the control unit drives the flying height control actuator according to the calculated deformation to control the distance between the thermally assisted magnetic recording and the disk in order to avoid contact between them.

A slider including a magnetic head part, an optical waveguide, and a near field element is fixed by first and second adhesives to a submount on which a semiconductor laser and a mirror are mounted, the mirror being placed at one end of the semiconductor laser in a resonance direction thereof and reflecting a laser in a direction intersecting with the resonance direction. At this time, at least parts of the first and second adhesives are applied to a position opposed to the semiconductor laser with an intermediation of the submount. The first adhesive having a higher Young's modulus than that of the second adhesive is applied onto an inflow end side of the slider including a solder connection portion, the second adhesive being applied onto an outflow end side of the slider.

A thermally assisted magnetic recording head is formed of a slider and a magnetic head. The magnetic head includes a main pole, a reader, a coil, a near-field transducer, and a waveguide. A metal film with high thermal conductivity is formed at both sides of the near-field transducer in a width direction of the magnetic head. The use of the metal film as a radiator plate ensures to prevent the temperature of the near-field transducer from becoming locally high.
