A method for forming a laminated glass article may include flowing a molten first glass composition having a first RO concentration and a first fining agent with a first fining agent concentration. The method may also include flowing a molten second glass composition having a second RO concentration less than the first RO concentration of the first glass composition and a second fining agent with a second fining agent concentration that is greater than or equal to the first fining agent concentration of the first glass composition. The molten first glass composition may be contacted with the molten second glass composition to form an interface between the molten first glass composition and the molten second glass composition.

An apparatus includes a fiber feeding system to deposit a fiber on an edge of the glass article and a laser system. The laser system is positioned to project a first and a second laser beam onto a first and a second side of the fiber, respectively. The laser system is positioned to project a third laser beam onto the edge of the glass article. A method includes advancing a glass article relative to a fiber; positioning the fiber in relation to an edge of the glass article, contacting a first side of the fiber with a first laser beam, contacting a second side of the fiber with a second laser beam, depositing the fiber on the edge of the glass article, and contacting the edge of the glass article with a third laser beam.

An apparatus for forming glass tubing is described. The apparatus for forming glass tubing comprises an endless former with an outer surface and an inner passage defining an inner surface. The apparatus for forming glass tubing further comprises two chambers from which molten glass may flow. One chamber flows molten glass to the outer surface of the endless former and another chamber flows molten glass to the inner surface of the endless former. The two flows of molten glass meet at the bottom of the former to form glass tubing.

Methods of fabricating a glass laminate is provided. According to one embodiment, a glass laminate comprised of a microwave absorbing layer and a microwave transparent layer is formed. The microwave absorbing layer is characterized by a microwave loss tangent &#x3b4;that is at least a half order of magnitude larger than a loss tangent &#x3b4;of the microwave transparent layer. An area of the glass laminate is exposed to microwave radiation. The exposed area comprises a cross-laminate hot zone having a cross-laminate hot zone temperature profile. Substantially all microwave absorbing layer portions of the hot zone temperature profile and substantially all microwave transparent layer portions of the hot zone temperature profile reside above the glass transition temperature Tof the various layers of the glass laminate prior to impingement by the microwave radiation. In accordance with another embodiment, a method of fabricating a glass laminate is provided where the exposed area of the glass laminate is characterized by a viscosity below approximately 1&#xd7;10poise.

Microwave-based glass laminate fabrication

The disclosure relates to methods for forming pre-melting and/or melting glass batch materials comprising bringing glass batch materials into contact with a plasma plume for a residence time sufficient to form substantially homogeneous, spheroid-shaped glass intermediate particles. The glass batch materials may flow in a cyclonic pattern in the plasma plume for increased residence time. The glass intermediate particles may be cooled with a tangential flow of gas to produce a cyclonic flow within the collection vessel. Also disclosed herein are glass intermediate particles comprising at least about 45 wt % of alumina and/or silica and less than about 55 wt % of at least one oxide of boron, V magnesium, calcium, sodium, strontium, tin, and/or titanium, wherein the glass intermediate particles are substantially homogenous and substantially spheroid in shape and have an average particle size ranging from about 5 to about 1,000 microns.

Methods are provided for controlling the formation of defects in sheet glass produced by a fusion process which employs a zirconia melting unit. The methods comprise controlling the temperature profile of the glass as it passes through the finer, finer to stir chamber connecting tube, and stir chamber to minimize both the amount of zirconia which diffuses into the glass and the amount of secondary zirconia based defects which comes out of solution in the stir chamber.
