A method for use in an interactive data processing system which includes a processor for controlling data entered into said system from an input device, and a display device which functions to display a spreadsheet shell that is defined by an application program. Data is entered into said system interactively by an operator through an input device, such as a keyboard. The operator selects a cell of the spreadsheet in accordance with the type of cursor positioning mechanism provided in the system. Once a cell is selected, an editing cursor is displayed in the cell at a predetermined first entry position. As each character of data is entered, it is displayed in the cell, just as it was entered. The data is neither formatted nor calculated if it was a formula. The operator indicates to the system when data entry is complete, by pressing an 'Accept' key which may be a dedicated key, preprogrammed key, or one of the function keys on the keyboard. Various conventional editing actions of the data in the cell are provided, such as deleting characters and scrolling at the edge of the cell.

Method for assisting the operator of an interactive data processing

A method of managing the relationship between intermingled objects of different types for editing purposes. Management is through establishing separate and combined modes of operation. When a separate mode is selected, only a selected object will be affected by an edit action. When a combined mode is selected, selection of any object will result in all objects being affected by an edit action.

Method for modifying intermingled text object and graphic object within

A method for tailoring a master document to obtain a special document. The master document is made up of data objects and portions of the data objects. Included in the portions are pointers to corresponding data objects. The portions are windowed and displayed. Selection of a window will result in a view port being opened through the window into a corresponding data object. The data object can then be scrolled to obtain a desired portion to be included in the special document. As each desired portion is obtained, it is stored and becomes part of the special document.

Method for generating a document utilizing a plurality of windows

A method for the intelligent, in-line, dynamic editing of documents containing mixed object types on a computer work station is disclosed. The mixed object types may be text objects, draw graphics objects, business graphics objects, and tables objects. The editor executes actions on use selected objects and attributes based on internal knowledge of the object type selected rather than by explicit user commands. This procedure provides a simple user interface that makes manipulation of objects and attributes and command execution transparent to the user.

In-line dynamic editor for mixed object documents

An application composite editor for compound documents containing not only text but also graphics and tables to facilitate the manipulation of object sets in the formatting algorithm. The editor works with a page layout philosphy wherein data objects reside on the page and data resides in the data objects. All pages reside within a document object, and some data objects may have additional objects within them. Objects are data-specific entities that the user can manipulate on the page. All objects exist within a specified boundary on the page, and this boundary is defined as an object set boundary. Object sets may be moved into positions on the page such that more than one object set is occupying a single displayable area on the page. Such an arrangement of objects creates a structure called a superblock. A superblock is any displayable area containing two or more objects sets positioned so that the object sets overlap one another, reside side-by-side or extend above or below one another. A text object set may not be overlapped by any other object set. Although the superblock is itself a complex structure, the creation of this structure by the editor greatly simplifies integration of different data types on the page for the user and allows the user to manipulate a group of object sets within a single displayable area on the page with relative ease. Moreover, formatting of the document is facilitated by the editor since the superblock is treated as an object set without taking into consideration the complexity inside the superblock structure except when a page end decision must be made.

Flow attribute for text objects

A method of, and system for, controlling a view of window information upon editing the information. The view is controlled based on mode selection. For normal information input operations, information scrolling is selected. Related existing information adjacent the newly input information will be viewable, but remote information will eventually be scrolled out of the window. For those instances where all existing information is to remain viewable upon input of additional information, border scrolling will result in a varying of the size of the window.

Window view control

A method for editing graphic objects in an interactive draw graphic system, in which the operator is allowed to select one of two editing modes which results in a graphic object being either redefined or remaining as is when a graphical editing action is applied only to a portion (sub-object) of the object. In the REDEFINE mode, the graphic editing action e.g., stretch, shrink, scale down, rotate, etc., applied to a sub-object results in the line segments of the object that are attched to the ends of the sub-object to be redrawn or 'rubber-banded' as the sub-object is edited (moved). In the AS-IS mode only the sub-object is affected by the graphic editing action and the rest of the object is not altered.

Method for editing a graphic object in an interactive draw graphic system

A computer based word processor or text editor is provided with a technique for defining line unit spacing which is particularly useful in a multi-font environment. A pop-down panel showing a miniature vertical scale line is displayed for the user. Adjacent the scale line is a handle which the user can select with a cursor. When the handle is selected, it may be moved up or down the scale line to the desired line unit spacing, at which time the handle is deselected. A numeric display of line unit spacing is also provided, and this display is continuously updated as the handle is moved. If the handle is moved to the top or bottom of the scale line, the scale line is moved up or down.

Definition of line unit size

A method is described for editing graphic objects in an interactive draw graphic system which selectively displays a menu of available editing actions in response to operation of one mouse button by the operator and allows the operator to cursor select the specific edit action from the menu to be made active by operating a second mouse key. The operator may also cursor select the object to be edited by operation of the second mouse key. Once the editing action is selected and made active, the menu is hidden (not displayed) and the editing action remains active in the system until positive steps are taken by the operator to either terminate the edit function or change the active editing action. The operator, therefore, does not have to return to the selection process after each specific editing operation. The previous editing operation is implied for the next edit operation.

Method of editing graphic objects in an interactive draw graphic system

A method is disclosed for interactively manipulating a business chart as a group of draw graph objects. The chart is displayed using predefined data. A draw graph object of the business chart is selected for editing. When the editing action is completed, a check is made to determine whether the action on the business chart destroyed the relationship between the chart and the predefined data. If it did, a message is displayed to the operator indicating that the link between the chart and the data has been broken.

Editing business charts

A method of, and system for, merging a portion of one document into another and providing for current viewing and on line editing. During preparation of a document, a paragraph from another document can be included in the document being prepared by referencing the other document and paragraph. The result of referencing is inclusion of the paragraph, a view of the document being prepared, and a document including the included paragraph which is dynamically editable. If the paragraph is edited, an operator decision is to be made as to whether the other document is to be updated according to the editing.

Merging of documents

A method of updating business chart data by editing the business chart is disclosed. The chart is displayed using predefined data. A draw graph object of the business chart is selected for editing. When the editing action is completed, a check is made to determine whether the action on the business chart destroyed the relationship between the chart and the predefined data. If it did and if the user has selected the two-way editing mode, the predefined data is updated to reflect the edited chart.

Updating business chart data by editing the chart

A method of, and system for, creating a document on a real time basis and providing a view of adjoining portions of the document. A data object is specified for creating a window on a display screen and data is input into the window. When the window has been filled with data, input of additional data will result in scrolling of the data, and the data will become larger than the window. Upon completion of the data object, the input data is stored, but a windows' worth of data continues to be displayed. When another data object is specified, another window is created on the screen for input of data. The operations are the same as with the first described window. As additional windows are created, the screen will become full. When this occurs, there will be a scrolling of the windows. As each data object is built, it is linked to the preceding data object. Upon completion of input to a window, the window is linked to a preceding window and to the data input into the window.
