A system for implementing a failover policy includes a cluster infrastructure for managing a plurality of nodes, a high availability infrastructure for providing group and cluster membership services, and a high availability script execution component operative to receive a failover script and at least one failover attribute and operative to produce a failover domain. In addition, a method for determining a target node for a failover comprises executing a failover script that produces a failover domain, the failover domain having an ordered list of nodes, receiving a failover attribute and based on the failover attribute and failover domain, selecting a node upon which to locate a resource.

Flexible failover policies in high availability computing systems

A distributed computing system is provided. The system includes a first node, a second node in communication with the first node, and a device coupled to the first node and second nodes. The first node and the second node include component specific modules. The first and second nodes access the device via a selected component specific module defined in the first and second nodes, respectively. The selected component specific module corresponds with the device. An apparatus for using a device having quorum device functionality as a quorum device in a clustering environment, a method and computer program embodied on a computer readable medium for using a device as a quorum device in a cluster environment, and a method and a computer program embodiment on a computer readable medium for interfacing with a quorum device coupled to a node in a cluster environment, are also provided.

A high availability computing system includes a plurality of computer nodes (for example, a server system) connected by a first and a second network, wherein the computer nodes communicate with each other to detect server failure and transfer applications to other computer nodes on detecting server failure. The system incorporates methods of maintaining high availability in a server cluster having a plurality of nodes. A group communications service, a membership service and a system resource manager are instantiated on each node and the group communications service, the membership service and the system resource manager on each node communicate with other nodes to detect node failures and to transfer applications to other nodes on detecting node failure.

Method for emulating persistent group reservations on non persistent group reservation-compliant devices, apparatus to perform the method, and computer-readable storage medium containing instructions to perform the method. The present invention enables the emulation of persistent group reservations on a non persistent group reservation-compliant device, including a shared disk, to enable the disk's implementation of persistent group reservation-reliant algorithms. This in turn enables the implementation of algorithms based on persistent group reservation features substantially without modification of those algorithms. One such algorithm is a quorum algorithm. One example of persistent group reservations is found in the SCSI-3 standard. The present invention accomplishes persistent group reservation emulation, or PGRE, by storing host- and reservation-specific information on a reserved portion of the disk and using this data to emulate the steps of certain persistent group reservation features. One persistent group reservation preempt feature executes a set of steps as a single atomic action, the mutual exclusion necessary for this feature being done internally by the persistent group reservations-compliant device. To emulate this feature, the present invention uses mutual exclusion algorithm, where the disk serves as the &ldquo;shared memory&rdquo; of the algorithm. The variables needed by the algorithm are also stored in the reserved portion of the disk.
