The method of compacting agglomerated powder comprises the steps of receiving a mass of agglomerated powder of random sizes; separating the mass into at least three distinct range of sizes including a fine range, a medium range and a coarse range; and thereafter compacting the agglomerated powder of each of the ranges into green briquettes, each of which is characterized in having a self-supporting structure to permit handling for a subsequent sintering operation to form a bonded compacted mass.

Compaction of powder metal

The process for extruding tantalum or niobium includes sealing a cold isostatically pressed charge of tantalum or niobium powder in a first metal cylinder and then sealing the first cylinder in a second metal cylinder with a metal powder of spherical shape in a gap between the cylinders. Thereafter, the second cylinder is cold isostatically pressed to prevent the metal powder in the gap from segregating. This is followed by heating and extrusion of the second container to form, e.g. an extruded bar. The ends of the bar and the skin on the bar can be removed to obtain a rod of tantalum (or niobium) with a yield of from 95% to 96% of the original powder.

Process for extruding tantalum and/or niobium

The process of forming an extruded product of tantalum or niobium requires a cold isostatic pressing of a charge of the powder to a density sufficient to form a green compact which is then placed in a capsule. The capsule is then sealed and heated to a temperature and for a time sufficient to anneal the green compact. Thereafter, the capsule and encapsulated compact are subjected to a cold isostatic pressing to achieve a density of from 70% to 85%. This is followed by subsequent heating and extrusion of the heated capsule and encapsulated compact to form the extruded product. The outer layer on the capsule which has been formed by the capsule material can be removed, as by pickling, in the case of the capsule being a carbon steel.

A manipulable puzzle and method includes a shallow box-like housing with a see-through top established by base-conforming side walls and-apertured front and back walls for containing slider bars incorporating a plurality of alternating teeth and pockets which are translated relative to the housing for selective manipulation of color coded balls between the pockets of adjacent, aligned slider bars to establish new distribution patterns of the color coded balls.

A slot game utilizing coins provides an enclosed partially transparent case having at an upper end thereof input slots for placing coins into each of a plurality of vertical columns. At the lower end is positioned a coin retrieval slot the allows removal of the coins upon pulling of a handle. Between the uppermost and lowermost points on the case are disposed a plurality of horizontal rows of blocks and slots. The slots are sized to receive coins of a predetermined size. The blocks and slots of each row are individually movable horizontally to allow movement of the coins between columns, thus, facilitating passage of coins in the slots from upper to lower rows. Each row of blocks and slots may be operated for horizontal movement individually by means of slides projecting from the case along one side of its face.

The refurbishing process permits an overlay to be formed on a casting to repair cracks, distortions and the like as well as to build up undersized sections. During refurbishing, a plasma arc is established under an electric current of less than 30 amps to form a shallow pool of molten metal on a casting. Powdered metal is delivered slightly above the molten pool and, subsequently, the melted powder and molten pool solidify to an overlay having a high integrity, cast structure which is metallurgically bonded to the casting with minimal dilution.

A cutting tool is provided with a fabricated cutting edge which is applied using a low heat plasma transferred arc and powdered metal. The heat affected zone between the applied edge and the substrate is maintained at a minimum with low dilution and penetration of the applied material relative to the substrate.

The shrouded turbine blade is provided with a wear resistant surface on the seals as well as along the abutment faces including the notched edges. The wear surfaces are characterized in being metallurgically bonded to the base material of the shroud without significant dilution by the base material. This is accomplished by using transparent plasma arc welding at a low amperage and a low temperature. The wear resistant surface can be of a material different from the base material of the shroud proper.

The worn tip of a turbine blade is restored by applying a metallurgically bonded wear resistant surface at the tip. The wear resistant surface is applied using a transferred plasma arc and powdered metal particles.

A device that may be embodied either as an interlocking puzzle game or as a security device and formed of a body and associated locking member adapted to be received by the body. A plurality of combination blocks are supported in the body along with a plurality of keys. The blocks have slots for receiving the keys with each key having a locked position and an unlocked position. The key in the locked position engages the locking member to prevent disengagement thereof from the body. The key in the unlocked position is disposed in the block and out of engagement with a locking member to enable disengagement thereof from the body. The combination blocks may be rotatable in the body.
