A method of forming nano composites within a polymer structure comprises exposing a wettable polymer having ion-exchangeable groups pendant therefrom to an aqueous solution of a soluble salt containing metal ions, the metal ions replacing, by ion exchange, the pendant groups on the polymer. After ion exchange the polymer is exposed to a reducing agent forming metal oxides trapped within the polymer structure.

Synthesis of magnetic, dielectric or phosphorescent NANO composites

A detector for magnetizable materials operates remotely to determine a amplitude and phase modification of an exciting magnetic field caused by the magnetizable materials. These amplitude and phase measurements are used to create a phase-amplitude trajectory in phase amplitude space, which may be finely divided to distinguish among a number of different types of components.

A system for controlling multiple vehicle includes a twelve volt (12V)/forty-two volt (42V) battery power distribution system that provides direct current. The system converts single phase alternating current to multiple phase alternating current to simultaneously power multiple vehicle systems. A single pulse width modulation generator converts the direct current from the 12V/42V battery power distribution system to alternating current. This provides one power supply path of alternating current, which has a first phase. A splitter device splits the one power supply path of alternating current into three power paths. A lead/lag circuit is used to shift the alternating current of the second path to a second phase different than the first phase of the first power supply path. A second lead/lag circuit for shifts the alternating current of the third path to a third phase different than the first phase or the second phase. This creates a three-phase alternating current power from a single direct current source. The three-phase alternating current is used to power a plurality of induction motors that operate multiple vehicle systems.

Conversion of single phase to multiple phase alternating current

A vehicle drive unit assembly includes an axle extending between a pair of wheels, a braking system for slowing and stopping the vehicle, and a retarding system located on the axle for assisting the braking system. The axle has a housing and an axle shaft that receives input from an engine and driveshaft to drive the wheels. The braking system includes a brake member supported on each of the wheels and an actuator for selectively moving the brake members between an unactuated position and an actuated position. The braking system produces a braking force to slow or stop the rotation of the wheels when the brake is in the actuated position. The retarding system includes a plurality of magnets supported for rotation with the axle shaft and an inductor held fixed to the axle housing. The retarding system produces a retarding force as the magnets rotate with respect to the inductor to slow the rotation of the wheels when the actuator moves the brake members to the actuated position. Thus, the retarding system assists the braking system to slow and stop the vehicle.

Drive unit assembly with a regenerative retarder

An AC motor is utilized to drive a closure on a vehicle. The use of the AC motor provides valuable benefits with regard to cost and size. Further, a three-phase AC motor may be utilized, and the pulses in its power supply monitored to determine an obstruction in the path of the closure. Frequency control may also be utilized to provide optimum control of the drive of the component at both start-up and stop.

AC motors for driving vehicle closures

A high temperature superconductor (HTS) synchronous motor or generator includes permanent magnets disposed in the rotor. The permanent magnets can be magnetized after the rotor assembly is manufactured. The permanent magnets reduce flux density perpendicular to the superconducting coil. The magnets can be disposed in the d-axis of the motor. The motor is particularly useful in propulsion applications.

Hybrid superconducting motor/generator

An apparatus for controlling multiple vehicle systems includes a single power supply that provides a direct current source. The power supply is comprised of a thirty-six volt (36 V) battery power distribution system. A converter is electrically connected to the power supply to convert direct current to alternating current. A plurality of induction motors are used to operate various vehicle systems. The motors receive alternating current via electrical connections between the converter and the motors. A central processor is connected to relays sending power to each of the motors and provides control signals to the motors based on input from control members used to activate each of the various vehicle systems. At least one sensor is associated with each of the motors to monitor voltage or current of the respective motor and to generate a diagnostic signal that is sent to the processor. The processor generates a warning signal when any of the diagnostic signals indicates that voltage within the respective motor is outside a predetermined range. A piezoelectric material is associated with each of the motors to provide an internal control signal for the motor. The piezoelectric material can be used to control acceleration or deceleration of the motor based on the rotational force of a rotor within the motor or can be use to activate an auxiliary winding in the motor based on mechanical input to the respective controller.

Control system for an electric motor

A plurality of motors for use in driving accessories on a vehicle, are each powered by three-phase current. A single controller controls the supply three-phase current to the plurality of motors. In another aspect of the invention, pseudothree-phase current is created from a direct current voltage source. A chopping circuit chops the voltage into a plurality of pulses, and a phase shift circuit then creates phase-shifted power signals from those pulses. The present invention thus enables the use of three-phase alternating current motors on a vehicle to drive accessories. This reduces the cost and size of the required motors.

Controls to incorporate three-phase motors into vehicles

An apparatus and method for ink jet printing on textiles is disclosed, wherein the steps of pre-treating, ink jet printing, and post-treating the textile takes place at the ink jet printer. A preferred method includes the steps of applying a pre-treat to the textile, evaporating excess water from the pre-treat, ink jet printing a pattern on the pre-treated textile, evaporating water from the ink in the pattern, applying a binder/post-treat to the pattern and curing the binder. The textile printing apparatus prints on an untreated textile by having a first application device to apply a pre-treat aqueous solution to the textile. A first heating element is arranged to evaporate most or all of the water from the pre-treated textile as it passes. An ink jet printer then accepts the pre-treated textile and prints the desired pattern on it. A second heating element at the output of the printer evaporates water from the ink in the pattern as the printed textile passes. A second application device applies a binder/post-treat to the printed textile after the ink evaporation. A third heating element dries and cures the binder/post-treat.

Apparatus and method for ink jet printing on textiles

A weather strip for use on a vehicle comprises an engaging portion for securing a weather strip to a vehicle and a weather strip body comprising a compressible portion and a magnetic sealing portion. The magnetic sealing portion provides a seal acting in a direction projecting toward a magnetically attractive substrate to provide a sealing interference between the magnetic sealing portion and the substrate when the weather strip is installed on the vehicle and a door closes the opening. The weather strips described herein provide an air and water tight seal without requiring a high compression force, thus improving door operation and reducing closing noise by eliminating the need to slam the door.

Magnetic weather strip

An apparatus and method used to detect metallized containers or other objects in closed packages traveling in a conveyor stream. The apparatus includes a pair of coil units mounted in association with a packaging conveyor such that the closed packages will pass therebetween. Appropriate field generation circuitry are connected to the coil units for producing a magnetic field. When the metallized containers pass through the magnetic field, the impedance across the coils will vary. The varying impedance is measured continuously, thus giving an indication as to whether the metallized object has been detected. If the package is nonconforming, steps can be taken to automatically remove it from the conveyor stream.

Apparatus and method for detecting metallized containers in closed packages

Multiple bits of information may be conveyed by passive target material incorporating filaments of magnetizable material having different magnetization functions and, in particular, different coercivities. Detection of the presence or absence of the individual filaments may be done remotely by measuring induced flux B as a function of an externally imposed magnetic field waveform and subjecting the measured induced flux signal to differentiation or Fourier transform techniques.
