In a liquid crystal display device (), each pixel row group is selected by a common scan signal voltage, each pixel row group including N pixel rows which adjoin one another in a column direction. Where two pixel rows which adjoin each other in a column direction and which are included in different pixel row groups are a first pixel row and a second pixel row, the first pixel row includes a pixel which has a pixel electrode () capacitively coupled with a gate bus line () which is associated with the second pixel row. When the first pixel row is included in the qgroup, the second pixel row is included in the (q+1)group. A scan signal voltage supplied to gate bus lines which are associated with the (q+1)group switches from low to high before a scan signal voltage supplied to gate bus lines which are associated with the qgroup switches from high to low.

Liquid crystal display device and driving method therefor

A liquid crystal display apparatus includes a liquid crystal display panel including a first substrate, a second substrate, and a liquid crystal layer and a plurality of pixels. The first substrate includes a first electrode provided in each of the pixels and a first horizontal alignment film that determines a pretilt orientation of a liquid crystal molecule. The second substrate includes a second electrode provided to face the first electrode and a second horizontal alignment film that determines the pretilt orientation of the liquid crystal molecule. Each of the first and second horizontal alignment films is a photoalignment film. At least one of the first substrate and the second substrate includes an anchoring structure in each of the pixels. The liquid crystal display panel further includes an alignment sustaining layer which is formed on the surface of each of the first and second horizontal alignment films on the liquid crystal layer side, is configured with a photopolymer, and imparts a pretilt angle greater than 0&#xb0; to the liquid crystal molecules.

Liquid crystal display apparatus and manufacturing method of liquid crystal display apparatus

A liquid crystal display device performs displaying by field sequential driving. The liquid crystal display device includes a plurality of scanning lines; and a plurality of signal lines including a plurality of pairs of signal lines, each pair of signal line being connected to one pixel column. Under field sequential driving, within one field period of emitting any of a plurality of color rays, there is an overlap between: a first period in which a first scanning line group included among the plurality of scanning lines are scanned and one of the pair of signal lines is used to perform signal writes; and a second period in which a second scanning line group included among the plurality of scanning lines are scanned, and another one of the pair of signal lines is used to perform signal writes.

Liquid crystal display device

In particular case second vertical scanning period includes a write period in which a first potential difference V1 is to be given to an upper electrode and a lower electrode. In another particular case, the second vertical scanning period includes a write period in which a second potential difference V2 being greater than the first potential difference V1 is given to the upper electrode and the lower electrode. In the former write period, substantially the same potential as that of a counter electrode is given to the upper electrode, and a different potential from that of the counter electrode is given to the lower electrode. A liquid crystal display device () includes a liquid crystal display panel () including a first substrate (), a second substrate (), and a liquid crystal layer (). The first substrate includes a first electrode () provided for each pixel, and a second electrode () for generating a lateral field across the liquid crystal layer in cooperation with the first electrode. The second substrate includes a third electrode () for generating a vertical field across the liquid crystal layer in cooperation with the first electrode and the second electrode. A display device () includes: a display panel () capable of being in a transparent display state where a background scene is viewable through the display panel; a panel light source () that irradiates the display panel with colored light of a plurality of colors in a time division manner; a rear side light source () placed on a rear surface side of the display panel, the rear side light source being capable of emitting colored light of a plurality of colors in a time division manner; and a control circuit that controls emission timings of the colored light from the panel light source and from the rear side light source, wherein the panel light source and the rear side light source are synchronized by the control circuit such that colored light of different colors are not emitted at a same timing.

Display device

A liquid crystal display device () includes a liquid crystal display panel () and an illumination element (), and is capable of switching between: a first mode of displaying in which displaying is performed by using a plurality of color rays emitted from the illumination element; and a second mode of displaying in which the background is allowed to be perceived, with no color rays being emitted from the illumination element. Each pixel is, under the first mode of displaying, capable of switchably presenting a black displaying state with a vertical field being generated across the liquid crystal layer (), a white displaying state with a lateral field being generated across the liquid crystal layer, or a transparent displaying state of allowing the rear face side to be visible in a see-through manner with no voltage applied to the liquid crystal layer, and, under the second mode of displaying, capable of switchably presenting a black displaying state with a vertical field being generated across the liquid crystal layer, a transparent displaying state of allowing the rear face side to be visible in a see-through manner with no voltage being applied to the liquid crystal layer, a white displaying state with essentially only a vertical field being generated across the liquid crystal layer, or an intermediate level displaying state with essentially only a vertical field being generated across the liquid crystal layer.

A first substrate () in a liquid crystal display device () includes a first electrode () provided in each pixel and a second electrode () generating a lateral electric field in a liquid crystal layer () together with the first electrode. A second substrate () includes a third electrode () generating a vertical electric field in the liquid crystal layer together with the first electrode and the second electrode. Each pixel exhibits, in a switched manner, a black display state where black display is provided in a state where the vertical electric field is generated in the liquid crystal layer, a white display state where white display is provided in a state where the lateral electric field is generated in the liquid crystal layer, and a transparent display state where a rear side of a liquid crystal display panel () is seen through in a state where no voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer. A potential difference between the first electrode and the second electrode at each gray scale level from a lowest level to a highest level is 60% or less of a potential difference between the second electrode and the third electrode in the black display state.

Pixels of a liquid crystal display device exhibit, in a switched manner, a black display state where black display is provided in a state where a vertical electric field is generated in a liquid crystal layer, a white display state where white display is provided in a state where a lateral electric field is generated in the liquid crystal layer, and a transparent display state where a rear side of a liquid crystal display panel is seen through where no voltage is applied to the liquid crystal layer. A gray scale level group including gray scale levels from a lowest level to a highest level includes a white level, a transparent level having a luminance higher than that of the white level, and a plurality of sub-transparent levels each having a luminance higher than that of the white level and lower than that of the transparent level.

An active matrix substrate (A) of a liquid crystal display device () includes: drive electrodes (A,B) a pair of which are arranged in each pixel; pixel electrodes () each of which is provided in each pixel; first switching elements (A) each of which is connected to one of the pair of drive electrode (A); second switching elements (B) each of which is connected to the other drive electrode (B); third switching elements (C) connected to the pixel electrodes (); first source lines (A) connected to the group of the first switching elements (); second source lines (B) connected to the group of the second switching elements (B); third source lines (C) connected to the group of the third switching elements (C); and a plurality of gate lines ().

An optical device () includes a first substrate () and a second substrate (), and an optical layer () interposed therebetween. The first substrate includes a first electrode () and a second electrode (), and the second substrate includes a third electrode (). The optical layer contains a medium () and anisotropically-shaped particles () whose alignment direction changes in accordance with the direction of an electric field applied to the optical layer. The first electrode and the second electrode, which are interdigitated electrodes, are disposed so that their respective branches () mesh with one another via a predetermined interspace. The present invention provides a liquid crystal display panel which is capable of providing a sufficiently high response speed and an excellent transmittance, and a liquid crystal display device. The liquid crystal display panel of the present invention includes a first substrate, a second substrate, and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the substrates. The first substrate and the second substrate have electrodes. The electrodes of the second substrate include a pair of comb-shaped electrodes and a slit-formed electrode.

The present invention provides a liquid crystal display panel and a liquid crystal display device each of which exhibits a sufficiently high response speed and an excellent transmittance. The liquid crystal display panel of the present invention includes a first substrate; a second substrate; and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the substrates, the first substrate and the second substrate each comprising an electrode, the electrode of the second substrate including a pair of comb-shaped electrodes and a planar electrode, the liquid crystal layer containing liquid crystal molecules which are inclined from an orthogonal direction to the main faces of the substrates between the pair of comb-shaped electrodes in a plan view of the main faces of the substrates when a voltage lower than a threshold voltage is applied.

Liquid crystal display panel and liquid crystal display device

The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device that can achieve a sufficiently-high-speed response and has a sufficiently excellent transmittance and a thin film transistor array substrate preferably used in the liquid crystal display device. The thin film transistor array substrate according to the present invention is a thin film transistor array substrate that includes, as electrodes, one pair of comb electrodes and a sheet electrode, and at least one electrode selected from the group consisting of the pair of comb electrodes and the sheet electrode being electrically connected along a pixel line.
