Data source queries may be specified in various languages, such as SQL, XQuery, and object-oriented languages, and each language may have various linguistic features that enable different types of queries. It may be advantageous to formulate mixed language queries having portions specified in a first language and portions specified in a second language, and to provide mixed language query evaluation components that can parse portions of queries of different languages. It may also be advantageous to permit the translation of single language queries into multiple languages to be parsed by such mixed language query evaluation components. Such techniques may permit queries to utilize linguistic features and processing techniques of one language that are less efficient, less direct, or simply unavailable in another language.

Memory efficient data processing is provided in a computer environment. A data representation or description is utilized to reduce memory footprint. A data structure can be serialized iteratively utilizing the representation rather than first loading the entire data structure to memory. Portions of the data structure can be materialized to and removed from memory as function of operational need.

Programming mechanisms for data parsing facilitate both clear code specification and efficient execution. Declarative style code can be employed to enable clear and concise specification of data parsing. Further, an efficient parsing approach can be utilized that enables processing of a data structure without first materializing the entire structure to memory. More specifically, streaming and/or selective materialization of portions of data to memory can be employed.

Streamlined declarative parsing

A system and/or methodology that employs a non-relational (e.g., XML (extensible markup language)) query language to access stored procedures employed in connection with relational (e.g., SQL (structured query language)) database management systems is provided. Stored procedures in SQL enable the predetermination of queries that can be executed against the relational database. The invention bridges the gap between non-relational query languages and relational data stores. In other words, the invention enables the integration of non-relational query languages with relational data stores. The invention can define a view of the relational data in the current data model, convert data from relational to non-relational format and provide a mechanism in which a stored procedure can be referenced from the non-relational query language, using, for example, a function.
