An apparatus includes a substrate and an optically powered surface. The substrate is transmissive of electromagnetic energy, and includes a plurality of reflective portions oriented and positioned to control a propagation direction of electromagnetic energy along an optical path of the substrate. The substrate further includes an input surface aligned with the optical path so as to allow electromagnetic energy to enter the substrate through the input surface. The optically powered surface is positioned relative to the substrate so as to redirect a field of view of the substrate. The field of view of the substrate is bounded by a first angular width, a field of view of the optically powered surface is bounded by a second angular width, and the second angular width is different than the first angular width.

Systems and methods to redistribute field of view in spectroscopy

An insulated heating-unit cover having an opening to permit air to circulate around the heating-source when a vent disposed at the top of the cover is opened, allowing heat into a space. The cover can include a heating-unit temperature sensor disposed within a space covered by the cover and a controller in wireless communication with a space temperature sensor located at a distance away from the heating-unit. The controller can be configured to operate an actuator such that the vent is open when the space temperature sensor indicates that the ambient temperature is below a set point temperature and such that the vent is closed when the ambient temperature is greater than the set point temperature. The controller can communicate with a plurality of other similar controllers and a central server to effect changes in the output of a central heating source coupled to a plurality of individual heating-units.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can be diagnosed by affixing a plurality of light sources and a plurality of light detectors against the subject's body near a joint, and sequentially transmitting light from each of the plurality of light sources into the subject's body. Signals are acquired from each of the plurality of light detectors. The rise time of the acquired signals that occurs in response to an inflation of a pressure cuff is determined, and an indication of whether the joint is affected by SLE is made based on the determined rise time. In some embodiments, a plateau time of the acquired signals is also acquired, and the indication of whether the joint is affected by SLE is made based on the determined rise time and the determined plateau time.

Dual function domestic hot water preheater and integrated space heater

Ionic superatomic materials that can be solution-processed into completely amorphous and homogeneous thin films are disclosed herein. The amorphous materials disclosed herein have tunable compositions and have electrical conductivities of up to 300 siemens per meter, thermal conductivities of 0.05 watt per meter per degree Kelvin, and optical transparencies of up to 92%. Application of these thin-films are also provided herein.

Solution-processable superatomic thin-films

A non-reciprocal filter with parametric amplification to obtain non-reciprocal propagation of forward and reverse signals is disclosed. The non-reciprocal filter may include two asymmetrical transmission lines and a current source. The filter, when implemented in the acoustics domain using surface acoustic waves (SAW), may operate in a phase-coherent or a phase-incoherent degenerate mode, providing low insertion loss and high decibels of isolation.

Systems and methods for detecting concussions in real-time are provided. An exemplary system of detecting concussions in real time includes an accelerometer to measure acceleration event and generate an accelerometry signal. The system includes a plurality of electrodes to detect an electroencephalogram (EEG) and each of the electrodes can be attached to a top region of the headgear through a flexible shaft. The system further includes a signal processing circuit to amplify, filter and broadcast an electroencephalogram (EEG) signal to a local wireless receiving unit.

Systems and methods for real-time concussion diagnosis by electroencephalogram activity monitoring

A heating and/or cooling temperature adjusting apparatus disposed proximate a point of use comprising a heat exchange structure, at least one thermal mass unit comprised of a material which changes phase at a predetermined temperature, and a housing which at least partially encloses the heat exchange structure and thermal mass unit. Additionally, a plurality of thermal mass units can be employed, each with equivalent, or differing, temperature threshold points for conversion between solid, liquid or gaseous phases. The presence of the thermal mass unit at the point of use allows for the heating/cooling system to rapidly adjust the temperature of the room while simultaneously decreasing the duty cycle of the heating/cooling generator (e.g. boiler).

Thermal mass for heat pre-load and time-controlled dispersion in building heating systems

Addressing an emissive display having pixels arranged into rows and columns. A first clock signal is received at an address select input of a first row of the display. Data signals are received at data signal inputs of the first row of the display, each of the received data signals corresponding to a column of the display. When the first clock signal is active at the address select input, the data signals are output to corresponding drivers of light emitting semi-conductors of the first row and via corresponding data signal outputs of the first row. The data signals are received from the data signal outputs of the first row at a first row of shift registers. A second clock signal is received at the first row of shift registers. When the second clock signal is active, the data signals are output from the first row of shift registers.

Addressing for emissive displays

An apparatus includes a substrate transmissive of electromagnetic energy of at least a plurality of wavelengths, having a first end, a second end, a first major face, a second major face, at least one edge, a length, a width, and a thickness, at least a first output optic that outputs electromagnetic energy the substrate; and a first input optic oriented and positioned to provide electromagnetic energy into the substrate via at least one of the first or the second major face of the substrate. The first output optic is laterally spaced from the first input optic. A number of reflectors and optional absorbers may be positioned proximate the first major face and/or the second major face to structure electromagnetic energy and/or to translate such from the first input optic to the first output optic. The apparatus may be part of a spectrometer or other optical system.

Integration of optical components within a folded optical path

An apparatus includes a substrate transmissive of electromagnetic energy of at least a plurality of wavelengths, having a first end, a second end, a first major face, a second major face, at least one edge, a length, a width, and a thickness, at least a first nanostructure that selectively extracts electromagnetic energy of a first set of wavelengths from the substrate; and an input optic oriented and positioned to provide electromagnetic energy into the substrate via at least one of the first or the second major face of the substrate. Nanostructures can take the form of photonic crystal arrays, a plasmonic structure arrays, or holographic diffraction gratings. The apparatus may be part of a spectrometer.

Nanostructure based article, optical sensor and analytical instrument and method of forming same

LED structures (e.g., LED arrays) and fabrication methods can reduce or even eliminate deep etching, and associated defect formation, proximate sites of individual LEDs. Such approaches can achieve desired electrical isolation without deep etching, provide a high conductivity current spreading layer, and, or reduce losses otherwise associated with conventional fabrication approaches. Some implementations advantageously lift off or separate an insulating substrate from a wafer to expose a bottom surface of the epitaxial LED layer and forms a backside contact (e.g., ground plane) overlying the bottom surface. Other implementations isolate deep etching away from sensitive regions and locate the backside contact on a top surface of the epitaxial LED layer. Some implementations form light extraction features (e.g., photonic crystals) on the exposed bottom surface. The top surface of the epitaxial LED layer may be undoped to improve electrical isolation. The bottom surface of may be shallow etched to improve light extraction.
