An apparatus, for charging a battery for a vehicle, includes a PFC circuit comprising a rectifier for rectifying an AC power to a DC power, and a link capacitor for smoothing the rectified DC power, a bidirectional DC-DC converter including a first switch for converting the DC power of the PFC circuit to an AC power, a transformer for boosting or reducing a voltage of the AC power converted at the first switch, and a second switch for rectifying an AC power from the transformer to a DC power, and a controller configured to control a phase of a PWM signal applied to the second switch such that the link capacitor is charged by an electrical power from the battery, when a voltage of the link capacitor is below a predetermined voltage prior to entering a battery charging mode.

Apparatus and method for charging battery of vehicle

A motor driving and battery charging apparatus is provided. The apparatus includes a motor having a plurality of coils, a rectifier circuit connected to the plurality of coils, and a high voltage battery. An inverter generates a driving current from an output voltage of the high voltage battery and supplies the driving current to the motor while the motor operates. While the high voltage battery is charged, the rectifier circuit rectifies an alternating current (AC) of an external power source, the motor and the inverter compensate for a power factor of the current rectified by the rectifier circuit, and the high voltage battery is charged with an output current of the motor and the inverter.

A link capacitor is charged through the power factor corrector. A converter connects between the link capacitor and a battery. A first switch connects any one of an AC power input line and a neutral line of the AC power input stage to the power factor corrector. A controller operates the power factor corrector and the switch network based on a received condition of the at least one AC input power.

A vehicle may include a first battery to output power of a first voltage, a second battery to output power of a second voltage, a DC-DC converter to convert the first voltage of the first battery into the second voltage, and to supply the power of the second voltage to the second battery. The DC-DC converter may include a transformer to convert the first voltage into the second voltage, a first switch to control first current input to the transformer from the first battery, a current sensor to measure a value of second current output to the second battery from the transformer, and a controller to turn on/off the first switch based on a set turning-on/off frequency. The controller may delay turning-on/off of the first switch based on the measured value of the second current.

A heat dissipation structure of transformer includes a bobbin formed with a hollow shape and wound with a primary coil and a secondary coil. A core surrounds an inside and an outside of the bobbin by combining a pair of upper cores with a pair of lower cores. A heat dissipating plate is disposed between the pair of upper cores and the pair of lower cores. According to an exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure, heat generated inside of the core can be effectively exhausted outside by a heat dissipating plate disposed in the center of the core.
