A three-dimensional (3D) image display device includes a display panel including an upper substrate and a lower substrate, the lower substrate having a pixel array area overlapped with the upper substrate and a pad area formed on at least one side of the lower substrate outside the pixel array area, wherein the display panel displays a left eye image and a right eye image; and a patterned retarder attached to the display panel and having retarder patterns to apply first and second polarizations to light from the display panel corresponding to the left eye image and the right eye image, respectively, wherein the pad area includes a first area in which data pads extending from data lines of the pixel array area are formed, and a second area in which gate pads extending from gate lines of the pixel array area are formed, and wherein the first area is exposed when the display panel and the patterned retarder are attached.

An image display device including an image display panel configured to display a 2D image and a 3D image, a driving circuit configured to apply a data voltage of a 2D data format or a data voltage of a 3D data format to the image display panel, a controller configured to control the driving circuit in a 2D mode for displaying the 2D image or a 3D mode for displaying the 3D image, and a patterned retarder including a first retarder and a second retarder that are arranged line by line, the patterned retarder configured to divide the 3D image from the image display panel into a first polarization component and a second polarization component, the patterned retarder being aligned so that boundary portions of the first and second retarders are positioned in a center of pixels positioned on odd-numbered horizontal lines or even-numbered horizontal lines of the image display panel.

An image display device and a method of driving the same are provided. The image display device includes a lenticular lens array, a first backlit display element that is positioned on the lenticular lens array and is driven at a frame frequency of N&#xd7;60 Hz, where N is an integer equal to or greater than 1, and a light source module under the lenticular lens array. The first backlit display element displays a video signal of a 2D format in a 2D mode and displays a video signal of an N-view 3D format in a 3D mode. The light source module irradiates light in the form of a surface light source onto the lenticular lens array in the 2D mode and irradiates light in the form of a plurality of line light sources onto the lenticular lens array in the 3D mode.

Disclosed is a system for aligning a 3D image display device. The system for aligning the 3D image display device comprises: a display panel showing a left eye image and a right eye image, and having a display panel align mark at a circumference of the display panel; a plurality of 3D filter including a transparent substrate, and a retarder converting a left eye image into a first polarized light and a right eye image into a second polarized light on the transparent substrate; a plurality of 3D filter align mark having a retarder pattern formed at a circumference of the 3D filter on the transparent substrate of the 3D filter, and a reflection plate formed on the retarder pattern; and a vision system taking pictures of the display panel align marks and the 3D filter align marks.
