The invention relates to a composition comprising a) a thermoplastic matrix polymer based on one or more ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomer(s), wherein the thermoplastic polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, polystyrene, polyacrylates, ethylene-vinylacetate copolymer, and copolymers and blends of the aforementioned, b) an inorganic flame retardant, c) a polymer based on one or more ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomers and having a plurality of alkoxysilane and/or acetoxysilane groups covalently linked to the polymer, wherein the ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomers of component c) are different or have a different composition than the ethylenically unsaturated monomer(s) of component a) and d) a clay.

Thermoplastic composition having improved flame retardant properties

The invention relates to a process of preparing a polyolefin polylactic acid polymer blend comprising the steps of i) providing a polyolefin selected from polyethylene, polypropylene, and mixtures and copolymers thereof, ii) providing polylactic acid, iii) providing a polyolefin selected from polyethylene, polypropylene, and mixtures and copolymers thereof grafted with at least one epoxide-functional monomer, iv) providing a polylactic acid grafted with at least one carboxylic acid or carboxylic anhydride functional monomer, v) mixing the components i) to iv) at elevated temperature in a range from 150&#xb0; C. to 260&#xb0; C., and wherein component i) is provided in an amount of 5.0 to 50.0% by weight, component ii) is provided in an amount of 40.0 to 90.0% by weight, component iii) is provided in an amount of 1.0 to 20.0% by weight, and component iv) is provided in an amount of 1.0 to 15.0% by weight, calculated on the sum of components i) to iv).

A method for producing functionalized thermoplastic elastomers on the basis of grafting substrates, selected from olefine-block copolymers of composition 80 to 98 mass-% ethylene-/2 to 20 mass-% C- to C-olefine units or partially crystalline propylene/ethylene and/or C- to C-olefine and/or C- to C-diene-copolymers of composition 50 to 98 mass-% propylene-/2 to 50 mass-% C- and/or C- to C-olefine and/or C- to C-diene units or cross-linked styrene/olefine/styrene or styrene/olefine-block copolymers, wherein, in a liquid mixing reactor per 100 mass parts of particular grafting substrate&#x2014;0.1 to 15 mass parts of at least one functional monomer from the series of functional groups comprising &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-ethylenic unsaturated compounds or 0.1 to 15 mass parts of a monomer mixture comprising at least one of said functional monomers and&#x2014;0.01 to 10 mass parts of at least one initiator forming free radicals having a 1-hour half-life temperature (T) between 50 and 200&#xb0; C. are added and, at reaction temperatures between 40&#xb0; C. and the melting or softening temperature of the grafting substrate, are polymerized over a reaction period between 10 and 200 min to solid-fluid phase, wherein a grafting product having a grafted functional monomer is produced by such a solid phase functionalization which is used as an input component for further processing. Functionalized thermoplastic elastomers having a degree of functionalization between 0.1 and 5 mass-% can be obtained using the method. Said elastomers are suitable for use as a bonding agent and/or adhesive agent for various substrates or multi-layer composites.

Procedure for the manufacture of carboxylated ethylene polymer blends, in which in a 1step, in a fluid mixing reactor, to 100 pbw of a particulate ethylene polymer&#x2014;chosen from among ethylene homopolymers (HDPE, LDPE) and/or linear ethylene copolymers with 2 to &#x2266;20 wt.-% polymerized-in C-olefin units (LLDPE, EOP), with a melt-flow rate MFR (190&#xb0; C./2.16 kg)&#x2267;20 g/10 min&#x2014;are added 0.05-15 pbw of a &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-ethylenically unsaturated mono and/or dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride (carboxyl monomer), or a monomer mixture containing at least one carboxyl monomer and 0.01-10 pbw of a radical initiator or initiator mixture, and graft-polymerizing at reaction temperatures of 30-120&#xb0; C., over a reaction time of 5-120 min and subsequently, in a 2step, reacting a mixture continuously fed into a reaction extruder of 100 pbw of the modified ethylene polymer obtained in the 1solid phase step, 150-4,000 pbw of an ethylene polymer or polymer blend with a melt flow rate MFR (190&#xb0; C., 2.16 kg)&#x3c;20 g/10 min, as well as 0-4,000 pbw of an olefinic elastomer, at temperatures of 160-260&#xb0; C. and continuously removing the graft-modified ethylene polymer blend that has a degree of carboxylation of 0.05-1 wt.-%. The products obtained are especially suitable as adhesion promoters and/or adhesives for numerous substrates, preferably on and between metallic surfaces.
