Small-radius coated optical fibers having large mode field diameter and low bending losses. The coated fiber may have an outer radius of 110 &#x3bc;m or less, while providing a mode field diameter of 9.0 &#x3bc;m or greater and a bending loss when wrapped about a 15 mm mandrel of 0.5 dB/km or less at wavelength of 1550 nm. The coated fiber may have a mode field diameter of 9.2 &#x3bc;m or greater and may have a bending loss at 1550 nm of 0.25 dB/km or less when wrapped about a 20 mm mandrel or a bending loss at 1550 nm of 0.02 dB/km or less when wrapped about a 30 mm mandrel.

Low diameter optical fiber

A highly packed, low bend loss optical cable is provided. The cable includes an outer cable jacket and a plurality of buffer tubes surrounded by the cable jacket. Each buffer tube includes an inner surface defining a channel having a diameter, D, and an outer surface facing an inner surface of the cable jacket. The cable includes a plural number, N, of optical fibers, located within the channel of each buffer tube and surrounded by the inner surface of the buffer tube. Each optical fiber has an outer diameter, D. The N optical fibers are densely packed within each buffer tube such that a diameter ratio parameter, &#x3a9;, is defined as the ratio D/D, and is 2.25+0.143(N)&#x2264;&#x3a9;&#x2264;1.14+0.313(N).

High fiber density, low bend loss optical fiber cable

A low attenuation optical cable is provided. The cable includes an outer cable jacket and at least one buffer tube surrounded by the cable jacket. The cable includes a plural number of optical fibers located within the channel of the at least one buffer tube. The cable includes small sized active particles located within the buffer tube, and an average maximum outer dimension of the active particles within the buffer tube is &#x2264;50 microns. The small sized active particles reduce microbending-based attenuation otherwise seen with larger sized active particles, particularly within densely packed buffer tubes.

Low attenuation optical fiber cable with small sized active particles

A highly packed, low bend loss optical cable is provided. The cable includes an outer cable jacket and a plurality of buffer tubes surrounded by the cable jacket. Each buffer tube includes an inner surface defining a channel having a diameter, D, and an outer surface facing an inner surface of the cable jacket. The cable includes a plural number, N, of optical fibers, located within the channel of each buffer tube and surrounded by the inner surface of the buffer tube. Each optical fiber has an outer diameter, D. The N optical fibers are densely packed within each buffer tube such that a diameter ratio parameter, &#x3a9;, is defined as the ratio D/ D, and is 2.25+0.143(N)&#x2264;&#x3a9;&#x2264;1.14+0.313(N).

This disclosure is directed to lighting diffusing fibers (LDFs) having a flame retardant coating thereon. The LDFs comprise a glass RAL fiber core having a primary polymer coating of a clear, colorless polymeric material having an index of refraction less than that of the glass fiber core and a flame retardant coating applied over the primary coating. The flame retardant coating consist of approximately 35-85 wt. % UV curable polymer forming monomers and 15-65 wt. % of an inorganic, halogen free filler, along with at least one photoinitiator and an antioxidant. In an embodiment phosphor-containing polymer layer can be applied between the primary coating and the flame retardant coating. In another embodiment the phosphor can be added to the flame retardant coating.

Flame retardant light diffusing fiber

The invention includes an optical fiber coating that exhibits the characteristics of a pressure sensitive adhesive. A viscoelastic window for the coating will include at least one set of coordinates that is within Quadrants 2, 3, or 4 or the Transition Flow Region of the Chang viscoelastic of the rheological master curves or will not include at least one set of coordinates that is not within Quadrant 1 of the Chang viscoelastic of the rheological master curves.

Optical fiber coatings with pressure sensitive adhesive characteristics

A coated optical fiber and a curable coating composition for coating an optical fiber, includes a block copolymer comprising at least one hard block and at least one soft block, wherein said hard block has a T greater than the T of the soft block. The coating may further include at least one reactive monomer. A method for making a coated optical fiber, includes providing an optical fiber; coating the optical fiber with a polymerizable composition including a block copolymer comprising at least one hard block and at least one soft block, wherein said hard block has a T greater than the T of the soft block. The coating may further include at least one reactive monomer. The method further includes polymerizing the composition under conditions effective to form a coating over the optical fiber.

Optical waveguide thermoplastic elastomer coating

One aspect of the present invention relates to an optical fiber coating compositions having, when cured, a Young's modulus of greater than about 950 MPa and a film to film coefficient of friction of less than about 0.44. Another aspect of the present invention relates to an coated optical fiber having a coating having a modulus of greater than about 950 MPa and a fiber to fiber coefficient of friction of less than about 0.74 measured at a speed of about 0.423 cm/sec and with a weight of about 100 grams. The coatings may include additives such as surfactants, surface agents, slip additives, waxes, and micronized polytetrafluoroethylene. The coated optical fibers of the present invention can be freely and smoothly wound on a spool without the formation of fiber loops, crossovers, or other defects.
