Refractory lining for e.g. casting boxes comprising a refractory matrix and precipitated silica, the silica being precipitated in situ to form a structure, imparting to the material a volume weight of from about 0.8 to about 1.2 g/cm.sup.3, the material being substantially free from carbon, hydrogen and available oxygen; process for the manufacture of such refractory lining.

Refractory lining and process for its manufacture

The invention relates to a lining for a furnace (1). The lining consists of pre-fabricated refractory ceramic anchoring elements (6, 7, 14), containing the fastening irons necessary for attaching the lining to the sheet mantle (5) and a refractory ceramic casting mass (8) between the anchoring elements for forming a monolithic lining. When relining the furnace the removal of the old lining is facilitated by first rupturing the anchoring elements.

The invention relates to a process for repairing hot refractory linings by applying a refractory composition by spraying on to the part of the lining to be repaired. The invention resides in the improvement comprising applying a composition containing an effective amount of combustible elongated channel-forming elements substantially evenly distributed throughout the composition.
