A cutting tool includes a substrate on which at least on the functioning parts of the surface thereof a thin, adherent, hard and wear resistant coating is applied, wherein the coating includes a laminated multilayer of alternating PVD or PECVD metal oxide layers, MeX+MeX+MeX+MeX . . . , where at least one of MeX and MeX is a metal oxide+metal oxide nano-composite layer composed of two components with different composition and different structure which components include a single phase oxide of one metal element or a solid solution of two or more metal oxides, wherein the layers MeX and MeX are different in composition or structure and have individual layer thicknesses larger than about 0.4 nm but smaller than about 50 nm and where said laminated multilayer layer has a total thickness of between about 0.2 and about 20 &#x3bc;m.

Coated cutting tool

A cutting tool includes a substrate on which at least on the functioning parts of the surface thereof a thin, adherent, hard and wear resistant coating is applied, wherein the coating includes a laminated multilayer of alternating PVD or PECVD metal oxide layers, MeX+MeX+MeX+MeX . . . , where at least one of MeX and MeX is a metal oxide+metal oxide nano-composite layer composed of two components, wherein the layers MeX and MeX are different in composition or structure, the laminated multilayer layer has a compositional gradient, with regards to a concentration, in a direction from an outer surface of the coating towards the substrate, the gradient being such that a difference between an average concentration of an outermost portion of the multilayer and an average concentration of an innermost portion of the multilayer is at least about 5 at-% in absolute units.

The present invention relates to cutting tool insert for metal machining on which at least on the functioning parts of the surface thereof a thin, adherent, hard and wear resistant coating is applied. The coating comprises a metal oxide/oxide composite layer consisting of two components with a grain size of from about 1 to about 100 nm. The oxide layer is under a compressive stress.

Coated insert

The present invention relates to a coated cutting tool insert useful for grooving or severing steel components such as steel or stainless steel tubes and bars. The insert is characterized by WC&#x2014;Co-based cemented carbide substrate having a highly W-alloyed Co-binder phase and a relatively thin coating including an inner layer of TiCNOwith columnar grains followed by a layer of fine grained &#x3ba;&#x2014;AlOand a top layer of TiN.

Coated grooving or parting insert

According to the present invention there is now provided a body of cemented carbide provided with at least one wear resistant layer, which body contains a zone in the cemented carbide and adjacent to the applied layer, containing triangular WC platelets with a specific orientation. Different binder phase gradients are possible. The body is in particular suited for application of CVD diamond layers.

Coated cemented carbide cutting tool and method of coating it with diamond

The present invention relates to a coated cutting tool insert useful for grooving or severing steel components such as steel or stainless steel tubes and bars. The insert is characterized by WC&mdash;Co-based cemented carbide substrate having a highly W-alloyed Co-binder phase and a relatively thin coating including an inner layer of TiC,N,O,with columnar grains followed by a layer of fine grained &kgr;&mdash;Al,O,and a top layer of TiN.

According to the present invention there is now provided a body of cemented carbide or cermets coated with at least one diamond layer. The diamond layer is smooth on all sides of the body with an R,<1 &mgr;m. According to the present invention there is also provided a method for reactive ion etching of a diamond layer on a complex shape body where the etching is efficient at all sides of the body exposed to the plasma. The etching is made using a C&mdash; or oxygen-containing plasma with the possibility of etching of a diamond layer covered by an outer layer of preferably a Si containing material.

Post treated diamond coated body

There is now provided a body coated with at least one diamond layer on a substrate of cemented carbide or cermets. The substrate is before the diamond coating process provided with spotwise occurring particles containing an element either being any of W, Ta, Ti, Mo Cr, V, Nb, Mg, Ca, Na, K or, preferably, any of B, Si, S, Al or P. These particles are dispersed at a density giving an average distance between two particles of 20 .mu.m or less, preferably 5 .mu.m or less.

Coated body, method for its manufacturing as well as its use

The presently claimed invention discloses a compound body of a wear resistant substrate with a surface coating, which body is suitable for wear parts and tools applications. The body includes top and bottom surfaces and at least one peripheral wall extending therebetween, the intersection of said peripheral wall and at least said top surface forming a cutting edge. The surface coating on said body is a diamond coating of a thickness of 1-30 .mu.m deposited directly from the gas phase in a reactor by CVD or PVD technique in a manner so as to ensure rigid bonding to said carbide substrate. The top face is provided with an integral chipformer so as to provide chips formed during machining into a desired and controllable configuration.

Diamond coated body

There is now provided a body of cemented carbide, Si.sub.3 N.sub.4 or another ceramic material, coated by at least one CVD or PVD diamond or cBN layer with a chromium nitride, chromium carbide or chromium carbonitride layer. The chromium-containing layer is outside the diamond layer which in the case of more than one diamond layer is the outermost diamond layer of the coating. Improved machining properties are obtained.
