Articles containing metal, hard metal, cermet or ceramic and coated with a hard material, and a method for producing same. The hard material layers can be used as anti-wear layers for cutting tools, as protective layers for turbine blades, or as diffusion barriers in microelectronics. The hard material layers exhibit a high hardness, high oxidation resistance, and excellent wear resistance. The articles are coated with a single- or multi-layer layer system by a thermal CVD method without plasma excitation, where the single- or multi-layer layer system includes at least one nanocomposite layer with a first nanocrystalline phase of cubic titanium oxycarbonitride and a second, amorphous phase of silicon oxycarbonitride or silicon oxycarbide.

Articles consisting of metal, hard metal, cermet or ceramic and coated with a hard material, and method for producing such articles

Hard-material-coated bodies composed of metal, cemented hard material, cermet or ceramic, coated with a TiSiCN composite layer or with a multilayer layer system which contains at least one TiSiCN composite layer. The TiSiCN composite layer is a nanocomposite layer which has been produced by a thermal CVD process without additional plasma excitation and contains a nanocrystalline phase composed of TiCNhaving a crystallite size in the range from 5 nm to 150 nm and a second phase composed of amorphous SiCN. The layer is characterized by a high hardness, a high oxidation and heat resistance and a high adhesive strength.

Hard-material-coated bodies composed of metal, cemented hard material, cermet or ceramic and processes for producing such bodies

Bodies coated with a SiC layer or with a multilayer coating system that include at least a SiC hard material layer, wherein the SiC layer consists of halogen-containing nanocrystalline 3C&#x2014;SiC or a mixed layer which consists of halogen-containing nanocrystalline 3C&#x2014;SiC and amorphous SiC or halogen-containing nanocrystalline 3C&#x2014;SiC and amorphous carbon.

Bodies coated by SiC and method for creating SiC-coated bodies

The invention relates to coated bodies made of metal, hard metal, cermet or ceramic material, coated with a single- or multi-layer coating system containing at least one hard material composite coating, and to a method for coating such bodies. The aim of the invention is to develop a coating system for such bodies, which is single- or multi-layered and comprises at least one hard material composite coating, which contains cubic TiAlCN and hexagonal AlN as the main phases and is characterized by a composite structure having a smooth, homogeneous surface, high oxidation resistance and high hardness. The aim includes the development of a method for cost-effectively producing such coatings. The hard material composite coating according to the invention contains cubic TiAlCN and hexagonal AlN as main phases, wherein the cubic TiAlCN is microcrystalline fcc-TiAlCNwhere x&#x3e;0.75, y=0 to 0.25 and z=0.75 to 1 having a crystallite size of &#x2267;=0.1 &#x3bc;m, and wherein the composite coating in the grain boundary region additionally contains amorphous carbon having a percent by weight of 0.01% to 20%. The coating is carried out according to the invention in a LPCVD process at temperatures between 700&#xb0; C. and 900&#xb0; C. and at pressures between 10Pa and 10Pa without additional plasma excitation. The hard material composite coating according to the invention is characterized by a composite structure having a smooth, homogeneous surface, high oxidation resistance and high hardness and can be used in particular as a wear protection coating on SiNand WC/Co indexable inserts and steel components.

Coated bodies made of metal, hard metal, cermet, or ceramic, and method(s) for coating of such bodies

The invention relates to bodies coated with a hard material, comprising a multi-layer coating system containing at least one TiAlN hard material coating and to a multi-stage CVD method for producing the bodies. The aim of the invention is to achieve excellent adhesion of the TiAlN hard material coating in bodies coated with a hard material comprising a multi-layer coating system containing at least one TiAlN hard material coating and a high degree of wear resistance. According to the invention, the bodies coated with a hard material comprising a multi-layer coating system containing at least one TiAlN hard material coating are characterized by the following features: the coating system consists of a) a bonding coating applied to the body, consisting of TiN, Ti(C,N) or TiC; b) a phase gradient coating that is applied to the bonding coating; and c) the single or multi-phase TiAlN hard material coating or coatings applied to the phase gradient coating. The phase gradient coating consists of a TiN/h-AlN phase mixture on the side facing the bonding coating and has an increasing phase fraction of fcc-TiAIN with an increasing coating thickness, (the fraction being &#x3e;50%), towards the TiAlN hard material coating(s) and a corresponding simultaneous decrease in the phase fractions of TiN and h-AlN. The coating according to the invention can be used in particular for tools and components consisting of steel, hard metals, cermets and ceramics, such as for example drills, milling cutters and indexable cutting inserts.

Bodies coated with a hard material and method for the production thereof

The invention relates to hard-coated bodies with a single- or multi-layer system containing at least one TiAlN hard layer and a method for production thereof. The aim of the invention is to achieve a significantly improved wear resistance and oxidation resistance for such hard-coated bodies. Said hard-coated bodies are characterised in that the bodies are coated with at least one TiAlN hard layer, generated by CVD without plasma stimulation present as a single-phase layer with cubic NaCl structure with a stoichiometric coefficient x&#x3e;0.75 to x=0.93 and a lattice constant abetween 0.412 nm and 0.405 nm, or as a multi-phase layer, the main phase being TiAlN with a cubic NaCl structure with a stoichiometric coefficient x&#x3e;0.75 to x=0.93 and a lattice constant abetween 0.412 nm and 0.405 nm, with TiAlN with a wurtzite structure and/or as TiNwith NaCl structure as further phase. Another feature of said hard layer is that the chlorine content is in the range of only 0.05 to 0.9 atom %. The invention further relates to a method for production of the body, characterised in that the body is coated in a reactor at temperatures from 700&#xb0; C. to 900&#xb0; C. by means of CVD without plasma stimulation with titanium halides, aluminium halides and reactive nitrogen compounds as precursors, mixed at elevated temperatures. Said coating can be applied to tools made from steel, hard metals, cermets and ceramics, such as drills, millers and indexable inserts.

Hard-material-coated bodies and method for their production

The invention relates to a tool, especially a cutting insert for cutting metallic materials, which consist of a hard metal, cermet ceramics or steel base, especially of a high speed steel base, and at least one layer deposited thereon. The single layer, or in the case of several layers the outer layer or the layer underneath the outer layer, contains molybdenum sulfide. The aim of the invention is to improve the resistance to wear of the friction-reducing, molybdenum sulfide containing layer even at high pressures. To this end, the molybdenum sulfide containing layer consists of an alternating sequence of two layer that are different from one another. The first layer contains 51 to 100% by weight of metallic molybdenum and the second layer contains 21 to 100% by weight of MoS which substantially consists of hexagonal crystals that are at least substantially oriented in a plane parallel to the tool surface.

Tool with a molybdenum sulfide containing coating and method for its production

The invention relates to a tool, especially a cutting insert for cutting metallic materials, consisting of a hard metal, cermet, ceramic or steel base body and at least one coating deposited thereon. This single coating or in the event that there are several layers, the outer layer or the layer below the outer layer, consists essentially of molybdenum sulphide. The invention also relates to a method for producing the molybdenum sulphide coating by chemical vapour deposition. According to the invention, the molybdenum sulphide coating contains a mixture of the sulphide phases MoS and Mo S with an essentially random orientation (isotropic orientation) of the phase crystals. The coating is applied by means of a chemical vapour deposition procedure.

Cutting tool and method of making same

A method for depositing refractory alumina (A.sub.2 O.sub.3) thin layers on cutting tools made of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics or high speed steel is disclosed. The present method is a Plasma Activated Chemical Vapor Deposition (PACVD) process in which the plasma is produced by applying a bipolar pulsed DC voltage across two electrodes to which the tool substrates to be coated are fixtured and electrically connected. In contrast to prior art methods, built-up electrical charge on non-conducting surfaces is suppressed and hence, no arcing occurs on said surfaces. This will permit stable, long-term processing, With the present method, high-quality coatings of either single phase gamma-Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 or of a mixture of gamma- and alpha-Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 phases can be deposited on cutting tools at deposition temperatures as low as 500.degree. C. When coated cemented carbide tools according to the invention are used in the machining of steel or cast iron, several important improvements to prior art produced Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 -coated tools have been observed.
