A system and method are described for managing a plurality of sever nodes. In one embodiment, the sever nodes are organized into groups referred to as 'instances.' Each instance includes a group of redundant sever nodes and a dispatcher for distributing service requests to each of the sever nodes. In addition, a central message passing architecture is defined which allows the various instances to communicate with one another. In one embodiment, a hierarchical configuration data object is stored within a database and is centrally accessible by all of the servers from all of the instances. The hierarchical configuration data object organizes configuration data and binary data in a logical hierarchy which simplifies sever node management in an enterprise network.

System and method for managing multiple server node clusters using a hierarchical configuration data structure

A system and method are provided for template-based configuration architecture. Configuration information from a first level is inherited. Configuration templates are customized via the inherited configuration information based on usage at a second level. The customized configuration templates are applied to default instances at a third level.

The user interface enables a user to modify a selected modifiable parameter associated with the property sheet data structure. Once the selected modifiable parameter has been modified, the modified parameter is stored independently with respect to the non-modifiable parameters in the property sheet data structure.

The configuration architecture may allow for overwriting the derived configuration with local content to allow for modifications of the derived content to adapt to the circumstance/environment of the derived configuration.

For example, in one embodiment of the invention, when starting up servers and dispatchers within an instance, the server layout of the instance is retrieved from the hierarchical configuration data object. In addition, binaries and configuration parameters stored locally on the servers/dispatcher are initially compared with the binaries and configuration parameters stored within the hierarchical configuration data object. If the binaries and configuration parameters stored locally are out-of-date, then new binaries/parameters are downloaded from a central database.
