The performing step further includes generating metadata for a subsequent inverse color gamut mapping that color transforms the mastered color corrected picture content for display on non-reference type displays having a non-reference color gamut. The subsequent inverse color gamut mapping is an inverse operation of a color gamut mapping applied during the color correction to obtain the mastered color corrected picture content for display on the reference type displays having the reference color gamut. The source picture content is mastered only for the reference type displays having the reference color gamut.

Methods and systems for displays with chromatic correction with differing chromatic ranges

A method, apparatus and system for providing color grading or color correction for displays includes a plurality of virtual device models where each virtual device model has a virtual model specification (VMS) which controls a display feature. Each display includes a display specification including a display requirement or requirements. An apparatus of the present invention is configured to compare the display feature of at least one VMS against the display requirement of the display specification to determine a best match therebetween to select a virtual device model to control a display picture. Color correction is further provided in post production using the VMS to provide consistency across multiple display types.

Method, apparatus and system for providing color grading for displays

There are provided methods and systems for color correcting displays with different color gamuts. A method includes performing an initial color correction on source picture content using a reference type display having a reference color gamut to obtain mastered color corrected picture content for display on reference type displays having the reference color gamut. The method further includes determining a first set of metadata defining a color gamut mapping specification for a color gamut mapping from a non-reference type display having a non-reference color gamut to the reference type display. The method also includes performing a subsequent color correction using the non-reference type display and the mastered color corrected picture content to create a second set of metadata directed to non-reference type displays having the non-reference color gamut. The method additionally includes generating a final set of metadata from the first set of metadata and the second set of metadata, for a subsequent color transform that color transforms the mastered color corrected picture content for display on non-reference type displays for consumer consumption. The source picture content is mastered for consumer consumption only for the reference type displays having the reference color gamut.

Methods and systems for displays with chromatic correction having differing chromatic ranges

A technique for enabling display of a source color space on a display color space commences by first receiving source color space information. The source color space information undergoes a conversion into a device independent color space. Once converted into the device independent color space, a LUT or other matrix assigns output colors for the input colors corresponding to the specific display device color space. The LUT or other matrix can be generated with the source material and transmitted to the source display device.

A method and system for gamma adjustment for average power level dependency displays includes applying gamma controlled functions over a range of values at a plurality of average power levels (APLs) for a display. The gamma controlled functions include coefficients for reconstruction of the gamma controlled functions. Upon a change to an APL, interpolation is performed between the coefficients to predict a new gamma controlled function for the new APL.

A method and system for weighted encoding of image data includes a transformation device configured to determine a non-linear transformation function for use in weighting an encoding of image data such that selected areas of the image data where increased detail is desired are encoded using a disproportionately greater number of bits of a total number of bits available for characterizing the image data. The system of the present invention can further include an encoding device configure to encode the weighted image data. In one embodiment of the present invention, the transformation device includes an analysis device configured to arrange pixel information into groups according to bit depths of the pixels of the image data, a post processing device configured to receive the organized pixel information and determine respective gains for the groups, and a transformation generation device configured to determine the transformation function based upon the respective gains.

A system and method for compensating for average brightness dependency (ABD) differences between displays with and without average brightness dependency (ABD) includes color correcting source picture content on a reference display to output color corrected picture content. In addition, an ABD simulation process uses the color corrected picture content to simulate the display of content on the reference display. Subsequently, a compensation process receives the color corrected picture content and information from the simulation process and applies an ABD compensation characteristic to the color corrected picture content for correctly displaying the source picture content on a display with different ABD characteristics than the reference display.

System and method for color correction between displays with and without average picture dependency

An imager achieves a desired image resolution by successively reproducing partial images which complement each other. The imager assigns pixels from an input image to the respective partial images according to complementing patterns that correspond to the pixel pattern of the imager. The imager reproduces the complementing pattern at different spatial positions, such that the complementing patterns merge. In order to avoid perceived double imaging of moving objects the image signal provided to the imager is assembled from an original image and a motion compensated interpolated image, which is derived from at least two consecutive images. Accordingly, every other partial image that is reproduced is derived from an interpolated image and takes into account movement of objects in the image that takes place between two consecutive images. In one embodiment the partial images are re-combined into one full image in a sequence that anticipates the distribution of the pixels used in the imaging device.
