It should not be possible for control units for motor vehicles to be exchanged between individual motor vehicles by unauthorized persons. For a motor vehicle it should, therefore, be rendered possible for individual functionalities of a control unit to be unblocked only for a specific motor vehicle. For this purpose, a first cryptographic key and a second cryptographic key are stored in a control unit. A cryptographic device is designed to encrypt a first message initially by one of the cryptographic keys, subsequently to encrypt a result of the encryption by the other cryptographic key and, finally, to provide a result of the second encryption as third cryptographic key for an encryption and/or decryption of a further message. A method configures a control unit in a motor vehicle.

In a method for operating a motor vehicle, encrypted data is exchanged between a sensor and a control device via a bus. An item of information required for decrypting the exchanged data is provided by a user of the motor vehicle by way of a portable device. The encrypted data includes measurement values of the sensor which relate to an operating state of a component of the motor vehicle.

A method for operating an authorization device for keyless entry and starting of a vehicle with a portable ID transmitter that has a motion sensor. A wireless communication link for interchanging data messages can be set up between the authorization device and the ID transmitter. Keyless entry to the vehicle is permissible only when an instant of last movement of the ID transmitter, as captured by the motion sensor, is within a stipulated interval of time. The authorization device permits keyless starting of the vehicle only when keyless entry to the vehicle has previously been permitted.

The invention relates to a method for transmitting vehicle data in the form of kilometer readings of a motor vehicle () to a memory element () having a counter, which memory element is removable from the motor vehicle. The invention relates to a remote ignition system for a vehicle with a remote ignition control device for activating a remote ignition by providing a release signal, means for detecting a driver's intention to start driving, and an engine control device which comprises the following: a first evaluation unit for evaluating a signal which has been received from the remote ignition control device, a unit coupled to the first evaluation unit for starting of the engine in response to a release signal and for stopping the engine in response to a blocking signal, and a second evaluation unit for evaluating signals which have been received from the means for detecting the intention to start driving. The engine control device furthermore comprises a storage unit for storing the last signal evaluated by the first evaluation unit, and a test unit which is coupled to the second evaluation unit, to the storage unit, and to the unit for starting and stopping the engine and which is designed to read out the signal stored in the storage unit when the second evaluation unit has ascertained the intention to start driving and, if it is a release signal, to send a blocking signal to the unit for starting and stopping the engine and to modify the contents of the storage unit. The invention relates to a method for controlling a locking system of a motor vehicle wherein, as the states of the locking system, there is an unlocked state, a locked state from which it is possible to switch to the unlocked state via at least a first operating element inside the vehicle, and a security state in which by simply activating a first operating element it is not possible to switch to the unlocked state. The aim of the invention is to propose a method that allows a person inside the motor vehicle to still leave the motor vehicle despite user activation of the security state without substantially easing the opening of the motor vehicle from the outside by an unauthorized third party. Four concepts are proposed that can all be implemented in combination to great benefit. They enable a person still inside the vehicle to leave the motor vehicle upon activation of the security state.
