A surgical implant system includes an implant body and an osseostimulative surface applied to, or used with, the implant body, the surface including a calcium sulfate (CS) compound which is a member selected from the group consisting of CS dihydrate, CS hemihydrate, anhydrous CS, and mixtures thereof. The performance and rate of resorption of the osseostimulative surface may be improved or modified through the use of a stabilizing component, a viscosity modifier, a pH modifier, or a cell growth inductive microgeometry. The system is also definable in terms of an in situ system of bone augmentation in which a bio-resorbable CS matrix, in various physical forms, from a kit is disposed about the surgical implant positioned within an osseotomy site.

Surgical implant system, article and kit

A dental implant comprises a solid elongated body including a longitudinal axis having distal and proximal ends in which the proximal end includes a collar having an axial length in a range of about 1 to about 3 millimeters. The collar exhibits a proximal and a distal segment in which the proximal segment includes a surface texture adapted for the promotion of tissue growth and in which the distal segment includes a surface texture adapted for the promotion of osseo-integration of surrounding preferably cortical bone. Either one or the other of the sub-segments is provided with an ordered microgeometric repetitive surface pattern in the form of alternating ridges and grooves, each having a fixed or established width in a range of about 2.0 to about 25 microns and a fixed or established depth in a range of about 2.0 to about 25 microns, in which the microgeometric repetitive patterns define a guide for preferential promotion of the rate, orientation and direction of growth colonies of cells of the maxillofacial bone or tissue which is in contact with the surface pattern.

A dental implant system includes an implant element for surgical insertion into a maxillofacial bone or tissue of a patient, the implant element having a collar section and a distal, anchor-like section, the collar section having an ordered microgeometric repetitive surface pattern in the form of alternating ridges and grooves, each having a fixed or established width in a range of about 2.0 to about 25 microns (micrometers) and a fixed or established depth in a range of about 2 to about 25 microns, in which the microgemoetric repetitive patterns define a guide for preferential promotion of the rate, orientation and direction of growth colonies of cells of the maxillofacial bone or tissue which are in contact with the surface pattern.

A dental implant for securement within a bore within a maxilla or mandible, inclusive of the cortical bone includes a threaded elongate anchor having a proximal upper portion having a larger outside diameter than that of an integral distal lower portion, the anchor defining, in axial cross-section, an envelope in which the upper portion substantially defines a cylinder and the lower portion substantially defines a conical section, and an engagable head integrally dependent from a proximal surface of the proximal portion of the anchor, the head having an outside diameter smaller than a greatest outside diameter of the proximal portion of the anchor, the outside diameter of the head also equal or less than a diameter of an entry region into the bore. A greatest axial length of the lower portion defines a length of about 6.0 mm.

A micromechanical seal between a first body and a second body is co-axially threadably securable about a portion of the first body. The seal is created by the combination of an annular planar radial surface within the first body; a surface of rotation of the first body disposed radially inwardly of the annular plane surface and defining, within a radial plane of the body, an obtuse angle, relative to the planar radial surface, in a range of about 90.5 to about 92 degrees; and an annular convex radial surface within the second body, such surface fully complemental in radial dimension to the planar radial surface of the first body, the annular convex surface defining a radius of curvature in a range of about 2 to about 8 ten thousandths of an inch, in which upon complete axial threadable securement of the second body into the first body, a region of compression of material forming the convex surface of the second body occurs at a tangent point of the first and second radial surfaces and in which polar alignment between the first and second bodies, during their threadable securement is facilitated by the above defined obtuse angle.

Micromechanical seal for dental implant systems

A dental drill, formed of a substantially solid elongate body, includes (a) a longitudinal shank having a proximal and a distal end and having an axially disposed irrigation channel; (b) a working portion comprising (i) an annular boss integrally disposed distally of the shank; (ii) a neck of reduced radius relative to the boss, integrally disposed distally of the boss; (iii) a cutting region of uniform diameter integrally disposed distally of the neck; and (iv) a cutting region having a tapered external geometry, integrally dependant distally of the cutting region of uniform diameter, the cutting regions including at least four integral axi-symmetric flutes formed upon lateral surfaces of the regions, each of the flutes defining co-axial peripheral profiles, each of the flutes separated by substantially co-axial integral channels, each having at least one outlet therein, the working portion of the drill having an irrigation channel extending the entire length and integral with the shank irrigation, the one outlet of each axial channel located proximally to a distal tip of the tapered cutting region, the tip defining a surface formed integrally and continuously with distal ends of the flutes and channels; and (c) a fluid-tight unidirectional baffle formed between opposing complemental surfaces of the shank and working portions, inclusive of the irrigation channels thereof, the baffle defining a one-way interior valve situated at an interface of the irrigation channels to preclude proximal fluid backflow within the irrigation channel of the shank during use of the dental drill.

A dental drill is formed of a solid elongate body, having a longitudinal shank including an axially disposed irrigation channel and a working portion having an annular boss and a neck of reduced radius relative to the boss, and a cutting region disposed distally of the neck, the cutting region including at least four axi-symmetric flutes formed upon lateral surfaces of the cutting region, each of the flutes defining co-axial peripheral profiles, each of the flutes separated by substantially co-axial channels, the working portion of the drill having an irrigation channel extending the entire length and having at least one outlet within each of the channels, the one outlet of each channel located proximally to a distal tip of the working portion, the tip defining a surface formed integrally and continuously with ends of the flutes and channels. The drill also includes a fluid-tight unidirectional baffle located between opposing press-fittably complemental surfaces of the shank and working portion, inclusive of the irrigation channels thereof, the baffle defining a one-way interior valve situated within the irrigation channels at an interface thereof, to preclude proximal fluid backflow within the channel of the shank of the dental drill.
