Thermal stabilization of olefin polymers, particularly polypropylene. Stabilization is accomplished by means of an ester of a pentaerythritol monoacetal. The ester contains a phenolic group.

Stabilized olefin polymers

N-substituted 2,5-dimethylpyrroles and a method for their preparation. The method requires the reaction of a 2,5-hexadione such as acetonylacetone with a urethane or a phosphoroamidate. The reaction is carried out at elevated temperatures, preferably in a water-immiscible solvent.

Substituted 2,5-dimethylpyrroles

N-acyl-2,5-dimethylpyrroles and a process for their preparation. The process involves heating a mixture of acetonylacetone and an amide. The ensuing reaction is a condensation reaction with water being split out.

Esters of monoacetals of pentaerythritol. The monoacetals result from the reaction of a 4-hydroxyphenylpropionaldehyde and pentaerythritol, and the further reaction of this monoacetal with either of two particular acid chlorides yields the esters of the invention. These esters are useful, in small proportions, to stabilize polymer compositions, especially olefin polymers.

Acetal esters

A process for preparing an asymmetrical pentaerythritol compound containing both trivalent and pentavalant phosphorus. The process involves merely bubbling oxygen into a solution containing 3,9-dichloro-2,4,8,10-tetraoxa-3,9-diphosphaspiro [5,5] undecane.

Organic zerovalent nickel complexes wherein the organic portion is derived from an ester of pentaerythritol phosphite. The complexes are believed to have a tetrahedral structure; one nickel atom is complexed with four molecules of the pentaerythritol phosphite ester. The nickel complexes are useful as polymer additives, being effective to impart improved resistance to deterioration of olefin polymers upon exposure to ultraviolet light.

Zerovalent nickel phosphite complexes

Aromatic, phenol-free polyphosphites containing at least two pentaerythritol residues and three bis-phenolic residues. They are effective polymer additives and are especially useful in enhancing the thermal stability of polypropylene.

Oligomeric aromatic polyphosphites

A method for converting methylphosphonous dichlorides to methyl phosphonic dichlorides.

Oxidation of alkyl phosphonous dichlorides

A process for the preparation of dialkylpentaerythritol diphosphites which are not contaminated by the presence of phenol. The process utilizes dichloropentaerythritol diphosphite as a starting material and since it does not contain a phenyl group there is no possibility of phenol being formed as a contaminant. Furthermore, the product obtained in this fashion is characterized by an enhanced hydrolytic stability.

Process for the preparation of phenol-free phosphites

Phenolic esters wherein the phenolic groups are hindered by at least one ortho substituent. The esters are effective to impart thermal stability to olefin polymers. Their structure is as follows: ##STR1## where R is alkyl or cycloalkyl of 3-8 carbon atoms, R.sup.1 is alkyl of 1-6 carbon atoms and n is 1-2.

Phenolic ester inhibitor

Phenolic acetals wherein the phenolic groups are hindered by ortho substituents. The acetals are prepared by the reaction of certain phenolic aldehydes with alcohols or mercaptans and are effective to impart thermal stability to olefin polymers.

Bis-(phenolic)diacetals

A process for the preparation of diphenyl phenylphosphonate. The process involves an Arbuzov-type rearrangement of triphenyl phosphite and is characterized by a relatively high reaction temperature.

Olefin polymers stabilized against deterioration caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The stabilization is effected by means of an additive which is a hindered five-membered nitrogen ring. The five-membered ring is a substituted pyrrolidine or pyrroline having ester or amide groups. The compounds are characterized by excellent hydrolytic stability.
