Pump actuator assembly for use in operating a pump for supplying intravenous liquid to a patient which comprises a housing having a sealed chamber therein with a portion thereof being covered by a flexible membrane. A plunger is mounted in the housing so that a portion thereof is disposed in the sealed chamber for movement between innermost and outermost positions. A constant quantity of liquid fills the sealed chamber. A booth encloses the portion of the plunger disposed in the fluid. A liquid-tight seal is provided between the booth and the housing to permit the plunger to be moved between the innermost and outermost positions so that the flexible membrane can be caused to move between extended and retracted positions.

Pump actuator assembly

An IV filter and pump assembly having first and second bodies secured into a unitary assembly. The first and second bodies provide a chamber. One of the bodies has an opening therein in communication with said chamber and an inlet port therein. The other of the bodies has an outport therein. The inlet and outlet ports are in communication with the chamber. An inlet valve controls the flow of liquid through the inlet port and an outlet valve controls the flow of liquid through the outlet port. A hydrophobic filter is carried by the unitary assembly and is in communication with the upper portion of said chamber for venting to ambient small quantities of air in said chamber. An actuator supplies a pumping action to the liquid in the chamber so that liquid is caused to be moved out of the chamber through the outlet valve and into the chamber through the inlet valve.

IV system and controller and combination IV filter and pump assembly for

Intravenous Fluid Pumping System having a controller and a pump controlled by the controller. The controller has a sealed chamber with a flexible membrane covering a portion thereof. An incompressible fluid is disposed in the chamber. A piston member is movable in the chamber causing extension and retraction of the membrane as the piston is moved in and out relative to the chamber. A motor is provided for reciprocating the piston. The pump has a pump body with a pumping chamber therein with one portion of the pump body being covered by a flexible membrane in contact with flexible membrane carried by the sealed chamber of the controller. The pump has an inlet adapter connected to the source of fluid. The pump also has an outlet adapter connected to the patient. Inlet and outlet valves are provided in the pump body whereby when the controller is operated to flex the membrane of the sealed chamber of the controller, the diaphram of the pump is operated to cause movement of the valve members to cause fluid to pass from the source through the pump and to the patient under the control of the pump. The controller is also provided with an alarm system whereby positive and negative pressure conditions in the pumping chamber can be sensed. In the method a piston-like member is used to positively cause displacement of a liquid within a sealed chamber to cause movement of a flexible membrane forming a portion of the sealed chamber. The movement of the flexible membrane causes simultaneous movement of another flexible membrane in intimate contact with the first-named flexible membrane. The movement of the second flexible membrane is used to create a pumping action in a pump having a pumping chamber in which the last-named flexible membrane forms a part of the pumping chamber.

Intravenous liquid pumping system and method

A kit of instruments for percutaneous introduction of a catheter into a major blood vessel of a human patient, including a hollow needle assembly having a proximal end adapted to be inserted through the skin of a patient into the blood vessel, a guide wire adapted to be inserted through the needle into the blood vessel, and a catheter having a proximal end adapted to be inserted into the blood vessel over the guide wire after said needle is withdrawn over said guide wire. The hollow needle assembly includes a first small gauge hollow needle having a beveled needle point on the front end thereof, and at least a second hollow needle mounted concentrically over the first needle and having a sharp chisel-shaped front edge located a moderate distance behind the point on said first needle. The needle assembly further comprises a pair of outboard wings mounted thereto and adapted to be readily grasped for inserting said needle into the blood vessel; and a transparent backbleeding evaluation housing mounted to the rear of said needle assembly, the backbleeding housing has an internal chamber communicating with the interior bore of the first needle and is adapted to be filled with blood from said blood vessel when the point of said needle assembly is inserted therein. The backbleeding chamber has a rear port adapted to admit the guide wire for insertion through the internal bore of the needle into the blood vessel. A hydrophobic filter element is sealed into the rear port to permit air within the internal chamber to escape therefrom as blood enters from the blood vessel. The filter element is a thin membrane readily pierceable by the guide wire to admit the guide wire into the internal chamber without substantial loss of blood therefrom. A y-connector with one way valves in inlet arms is provided for communicating fluid into the catheter.

System and method for catheter placement in blood vessels of a human

Inflating and deflating device for vascular dilating catheter assembly

Inflating and deflating device adapted to be used by a human hand. It comprises a housing and a syringe carried by the housing. The syringe comprises a syringe body having an outlet through which liquid can pass and a piston slidably mounted in the syringe body and forming a sealing engagement with the body. A piston rod is secured to the piston and extends out of the body. A tubular member is provided. A connector means connects the tubular member to the outlet of the syringe body. A handle is carried by the housing and is secured to the syringe for causing relative movement between the piston and the syringe body. The handle means includes first and second portions movable with respect to each other. The first portion is secured to one of said piston rod or said syringe body and the other said portions are secured to one of the other of said piston rod and said syringe body. The first portion is of a size so as to be adapted to being engaged by all of the fingers of the hand and the second portion is adapted to be engaged by the palm of the hand during the time that the fingers of the hand are engaging the first portion whereby a force to cause relative movement between the piston and the syringe body can be created by that hand.

A system for filling and subsequently producing inflation and deflation of a balloon-type dilating catheter assembly utilized in performing a percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty procedure. Separate primary and secondary fluid pump assemblies are provided for isolating the working pump fluid in the primary assembly from the radiocontrast medium filling the secondary assembly. The primary fluid pump assembly includes a primary pump chamber having a flexible diaphragm forming one wall thereof and a hydraulic cylinder including a piston for supplying fluid under pressure to the pump chamber. The pump assembly has been filled with a relatively incompressible liquid while the piston in the cylinder is held in an intermediate fill position and the diaphragm is held substantially flat to enable the primary fluid pump assembly to produce both convex and concave shapes of the diaphragm as the piston is moved between forward and rearward position. The second fluid pump assembly is adapted to mount to the primary pump chamber. The secondary fluid pump assembly includes a secondary pump chamber having a second flexible diaphragm forming one wall thereof and adapted to mate with the first flexible diaphragm. A resealing fluid entry port is provided in the secondary pump chamber for admitting fluid to the chamber. A bayonet mounting arrangement for mounting the secondary pump chamber to the primary pump chamber is provided to bring the two diaphragms into intimate physical contact. Manual and automatic means for driving the piston of the hydraulic cylinder between forward and backward positions are disclosed to alternately create both balloon-inflating pressure and balloon-deflating vacuum in the secondary pump chamber and dilating catheter assembly by way of the diaphragms after it is filled with a relatively incompressible fluid.

System for filling and inflating and deflating a vascular dilating

Intravenous administration set for use with a source of liquid to be administered intravenously and having a length of flexible tube with a fitting carried on one end of the same adapted to be connected to the source of liquid. A burette is provided which has a chamber formed therein. The other end of the flexible tube is mounted in the burette so that liquid passing through the tube flows into the burette chamber. A filter assembly is carried by the burette and has a recess formed therein. A projection extends into the recess and defines at least a portion of an outlet opening for withdrawing liquid from the burette chamber. The filter assembly includes a hydrophillic filter which provides the only path for the flow of liquid and gas into the recess. The member and the projection are formed in such a manner that all liquid passing through the outlet opening must pass into the recess through the filter and carry with it any gas in the recess. Tubing is connected to the outlet opening in communication with the burette chamber and is adapted to be coupled to the patient which is to be intravenously fed.

Intravenous administration set

The intravenous feeding pump actuator of the present invention is driven by a small, very slow speed motor and a gear train, such as one rotating the output shaft at a speed of one revolution per minue (1 r.p.m.). The single motor drives a readily replaceable cam which is slipped into position on the drive shaft and needs no other means for attaching it thereto. Each of the cams normally supplied with the actuator is designed to give a predetermined number of rocking movements per minute to a cam follower which directly operates the associated intravenous pump, and simultaneously controls the limit of travel of the cam follower and thus the length of the stroke of the pump operator. It will be understood that each of the cams will provide for a different flow rate for the associated pump by controlling the number of strokes per minute and the length of each stroke and is readily changeable so that one can be quickly and easily removed and another placed in its stead when determined by operating conditions.

Intravenous liquid delivery system

The present invention comprises a small, precise measuring pump provided with a germ barrier that is specifically designed for intravenous feeding devices and comprises: inlet and outlet chambers which are preferably integral one with the other, an inlet adapted to receive a tube from a storage device and the outlet chamber provided with an outlet adapted to receive a tube for delivery of material pumped to a patient; a passageway between the two chambers, which serves as an outlet from the inlet chamber and an inlet into the outlet chamber; a valve (preferably a float valve) associated with each inlet; and an actuating device which includes a piston and a tightly fitting resilient sheath enclosing the piston, the combination of piston and sheath projecting into the inlet chamber. The movement of the piston inwardly and outwardly within the inlet chamber provides the pumping force for the operation of the pump, and the sheath provides a sterile seal between the piston and the body of the pump and also, if made of resilient material, such as rubber, provides a force for returning the piston to an inoperative position. A pumping force may be applied to the external end of the piston by any suitable means.

Intravenous delivery pump

An inhalation device having an elongate housing having a passageway for the movement of air therethrough. The passageway terminates in an emptying chamber adjacent that end of the housing which is adapted for insertion into the mouth or nasal passages of a user thereof. The housing has means for receiving and opening a container holding a unit dose of powdered medicament for administration. The opening means includes first means for placing the interior of the opened capsule in communication with the atmosphere and second means for placing the interior of the opened capsule in communication with the emptying chamber via the passageway in the housing. During inhalation, air drawn through the first means causes the powdered medicament to be expelled from the container through the second means, the passageway and the emptying chamber into the nose, throat or lungs of the user where beneficial or therapeutic action of the medicament occurs.

Inhalation device

Method for intravenous feeding of a patient by a pump and a pump actuator which is provided with readily insertable and removable cams which control the number of pump strokes per unit of time and also the amount of intravenous fluid injected by each stroke in accordance with a prescription of intravenous fluid placed in a container. A predetermined prescription of intravenous fluid is prepared and placed in a container. The container and a cam which is tailored to the requirements of the prescription in the container is delivered to the patient. The cam is placed on the pump actuator. The container is connected to the pump and the pump is connected to a vein of the patient. The pump actuator is operated by the use of the cam to operate the pump to supply the prescribed intravenous liquid in the container to the patient in accordance with the prescription.

Method for intravenous feeding of a patient

The combination drug administration device and alarm system is adapted to be connected to a source of intravenous liquid and to a patient. A container is provided having a inlet and an outlet. A piston is slidably mounted in the container for movement between extended and retracted positions. A stem is secured to the piston and has a portion thereof remaining out of the container during movement between the extended and retracted positions. A switch is provided and is mounted on the stem exterior of the container so that the switch means can be slidably positioned on the stem and will be retained on the stem in an adjusted predetermined position thereon but which will not impede movement of the piston and the stem in the container. The switch has an operating member adapted to be engaged by the container as the piston and the stem move as liquid is being dispensed from the container to cause actuation of an alarm when a predetermined quantity of liquid has been dispensed from the container which is less than the total amount of liquid in the container. The method is for administering a drug in an intravenous liquid from a source of intravenous liquid to a patient by the use of the container having an inlet and an outlet with a piston slidably mounted in the container and a stem secured to the piston and extending out of the container. A predetermined amount of the intravenous liquid is provided in the container and a drug is mixed into the liquid in the container. The liquid with the drug therein is then dispensed to the patient through the outlet. An alarm is initiated when a predetermined amount less than the total amount of the liquid in the container has been dispensed to the patient to provide a pre-alarm.

Combination drug administration device and alarm system and method

An inhalation device having an elongate housing having a passageway for the movement of air therethrough. The passageway terminates in an emptying chamber adjacent that end of the housing which is adapted for insertion into the mouth or nasal passages of a user thereof. The housing has means for receiving and opening a container holding a unit dose of powdered medicament for administration. The opening means includes first means for placing the interior of the opened capsule in communication with the atomosphere and second means for placing the interior of the opened capsule in communication with the emptying chamber via the passageway in the housing. During inhalation, air drawn through the first means causes the powdered medicament to be expelled from the container through the second means, the passageway and the emptying chamber into the nose, throat or lungs of the user where beneficial or therapeutic action of the medicament occurs.

The present invention relates to a failure alarm system for an intravenous feeding pump in which the pumping force is secured by the projection of a plunger into a chamber filled with the liquid to be pumped, which plunger is encased in a tightly fitting sheath of elastic material. In such a pump, actuation is secured by the application of a force from an actuator to the end of the plunger extending without the wall of a pumping chamber and the return force is secured by the elasticity of the sheath. The actuator of such a pump provides an actuator which can be selectively set to provide an extended range of operations per unit of time and can be modified to control the amount of projection into the pumping chamber by the plunger. In such a combination means is provided by the present invention for sensing the fact that there is a negative pressure, or suction, in the system that is not balanced by the in-flow of liquid, i.e., the amount of fluid delivered to the pump for each operation is less than that required by the setting (thus sensing when a supply is shut off, or less than the preset amount of liquid is reaching the pump).
