Described herein are methods, compositions, and kits for treating and/or preventing in a subject one or more side effects associated with radiation and/or chemotherapy exposure, including methods, compositions and kits that include an active agent at a low dose. In some embodiments, methods, compositions, and kits for treating and/or preventing tissue damage in a subject are provided, including methods, compositions and kits that include an active agent at a low dose.

Provided herein are fluoro-substituted porphyrin compounds, such as those having a structure represented by Formula (I), wherein Ris a C1-C8 alkyl that is substituted with at least 1 fluorine (e.g., a C1-C8 alkyl substituted with 1-17 fluorine atoms); and X is an anion (e.g. a halogen ion (e.g., chloride, etc.), PF, tosylate, besylate, and/or mesylate). Also provided herein are methods of making the fluoro-substituted porphyrin compounds, pharmaceutical formulations containing the same, and methods of use thereof.

A method of treating pruritus (itching) in a subject in need thereof is carried out by administering the subject an active agent in a treatment effective amount, wherein the active agent is a superoxide dismuate (SOD) mimetic. The SOD mimetic can be a complex of a metal (e.g., manganese) and an organic ligand, with suitable organic ligands including porphyrins, polyamines, salens, nitroxides, and fullerenes. Compositions for carrying out such methods are also described.

Methods of treating pruritus

The present invention relates, in general, to a method of modulating physiological and pathological processes and, in particular, to a method of modulating cellular levels of oxidants and thereby processes in which such oxidants are a participant. The invention also relates to compounds and compositions suitable for use in such methods.

Substituted porphyrins

Substituted metalloporphyrin compounds are described, along with pharmaceutical compositions containing the same, and methods of use thereof in protecting cells from oxidant-induced toxicity and pathological conditions such as inflammatory lung disease, neurodegenerative conditions, radiation injury, cancer, diabetes, cardiac conditions and sickle cell disease. Mn(III) porphyrins bearing oxygen atoms within side chains are particularly described.

The method for fluorescent staining of cellular and intracellular membranes includes contacting a cell sample, such as a cell culture, with a fluorescent probe including Zn(II) meso-tetrakis(N-n-hexylpyridinium-4-yl)porphyrin tetrachloride (ZnTnHex-4-PyPCl). The fluorescent probe is an amphiphilic, water-soluble compound. The fluorescent probe does not interfere with cell culture media components or other staining products. The fluorescent probe is not harmful to cells.

Method for fluorescent staining of cellular and intracellular membranes

The present invention relates, in general, to cancer therapy, and, in particular, to a method of preventing or treating cancer using low molecular weight antioxidants (e.g., mimetics of superoxide dismutase (SOD)) as the active agent or as a chemo- and/or radio-protectant. The present invention provides a method of hydroxylating or oxidizing a compound of interest in a subject (e.g., a cytotoxic oxazaphosphorine prodrug), by administering the compound of interest to the subject; and concurrently administering the subject a metalloporphyrin in an amount effective to hydroxylate or oxidize the compound of interest in the subject.
