The disclosure provides a method for virtual volume snapshot creation by a storage array. The method generally includes receiving a request to generate a snapshot of a virtual volume associated with a virtual machine, in response to receiving the request, preparing a file system of the storage array to generate the snapshot, wherein preparing the file system comprises creating a delta storage structure to receive write input/output (I/O) requests directed for the virtual volume when generating the snapshot of the virtual volume, deactivating the virtual volume, activating the delta storage structure, generating the snapshot of the virtual volume, and during the generation of the snapshot of the virtual volume: receiving a write I/O directed for the virtual volume and committing the write I/O in the delta storage structure.

One embodiment of the present invention provides a switch. The switch includes a processor, a storage device, a multicast management module, and a graceful recovery module. The multicast management module participates in a multicast tree of a multicast group. The graceful recovery module determines a recovery event and constructs a message indicating the recovery event for a second switch. The switch and the second switch belong to a first virtual local area network (VLAN). The graceful recovery module then identifies a completion notification message from the second switch indicating a completion of replaying multicast information stored in the second switch and includes multicast information received from the second switch in a local multicast database.

A technique uses file system indirection to manage solid state devices (SSDs). Based on relocation of data on the SSDs from a first SSD storage block to a second SSD storage block, a flash translation layer (FTL) driver may update a per-volume indirection file to reference the second SSD storage block and no longer reference the first SSD storage block. Based on a mismatch between the per-volume indirection file and a buffer tree, the buffer tree is updated to reference the second SSD storage block. Alternatively, the FTL driver may create and insert an entry into a mapping table, wherein the entry may reference the first SSD storage block and also reference the second SSD storage block. The buffer tree may then be updated to reference the second SSD storage block based on the new entry, and the new entry may then be deleted after the buffer tree is updated.
