A wireless system is provided which comprises a test and control device, and a power distribution device. The test and control device has a first microprocessor executing a first firmware. The power distribution device has a second microprocessor executing a second firmware. The first microprocessor is coupled a first wireless communications port, and the second microprocessor is coupled to a second wireless communication port. The first and second wireless communication ports are configured to communicate wireless communications there between.

Method and devices for wireless communication between test and control devices and power distribution devices

The power management control system comprises a computer having standard RS485 interface cards and adapters installed in its I/O slots defining multiple industry standard Modbus RTU networks. The computer contains software for monitoring and controlling selected aspects of power usage/consumption, as described in more detail hereinafter. The Modbus RTU protocol is a well known industry standard. Devices with a Modbus RTU interface can be connected directly to the Modbus and other devices which communicate on the Commnet protocol require a Modbus concentrator. The Modbus concentrator provides an interface between the Modbus RTU protocol and the Commnet protocol, whereby these other devices can communicate through the Modbus concentrator over the Modbus. Alternatively, standard Ethernet interface cards and adapters are installed in the computer's I/O slots defining multiple standard Ethernet TCP/IP networks. The Ethernet TCP/IP protocol is a well known standard, which would allow a user of the power management control system of the present invention to use its existing LAN. Ethernet gateways are connected to the Ethernet TCP/IP networks to provide an interface between the Ethernet TCP/IP protocol and the Modbus RTU protocol.

Power management control system

A motor controller unit that employs standard motor contactors and electronic circuit breakers includes an electronic control module (ECM) for interfacing with the contactors and circuit breakers. Electrical connection with the circuit breaker electronic trip unit and the ECM is made by means of the circuit breaker rating plug. Electrical connection with the contactors and the ECM is made by means of externally-accessible terminal screws.

A digital circuit interrupter utilizing current transformers for operating power is provided with a re-chargeable battery to power-up the trip unit as well as to power the display after an overcurrent trip occurrence to enable an operator to determine both the magnitude as well as the cause of the overcurrent condition.

Low voltage electric switchgear equipment includes a central programmer unit electrically interconnected with electronic main and branch circuit interrupters within the same enclosure and used with a multi-phase power distribution circuit. Indicating diodes are arranged on each of the circuit interrupters for signaling the occurrence of an overcurrent condition. The same indicating diodes are arranged for responding to address commands generated by the field programmer as to the exact location of each circuit interrupter within the enclosure.

A test kit for a digital and analog electronic circuit breaker determines the calibration and overcurrent response of the circuit breaker when connected within an electric power circuit. The test kit simulates an overcurrent condition and provides verification of the circuit breaker response without de-energizing the circuit breaker or interfering with the circuit breaker's protection functions. The test kit connects with the digital communications circuit within the digital circuit breaker to obtain status information concerning pick-up conditions, trip conditions and fault currents which are viewed on the test kit liquid crystal display. A ground fault suppression circuit is included within the test kit for single-phase current-injection without causing ground fault tripping. The test kit circuit further includes means for optionally tripping the circuit breaker upon completion of any of the tests.

Circuit protection and protective relay functions are provided by common circuit elements under the control of a single processor unit. Voltage and current values are obtained on a continuous basis and these values are continuously monitored within the processor to determine the electrical status of a protected power distribution system. Upon the occurrence of an overcurrent or undervoltage condition, the circuit is interrupted by operation of a circuit breaker trip solenoid causing the breaker contacts to open. When the overcurrent or undervoltage condition ceases to exist, the circuit breaker contacts could be closed by operation of a controlled relay. The ROM and RAM storage elements within the processor unit are continuously tested and the circuit breaker contacts are opened upon indication that the ROM or RAM element is nonfunctional.
