Load balancing and overload control techniques are disclosed for use in a SIP-based network or other type of network comprising a plurality of servers. In a load balancing technique, a first server receives feedback information from at least first and second downstream servers associated with respective first and second paths between the first server and a target server, the feedback information comprising congestion measures for the respective downstream servers. The first server dynamically adjusts a message routing process based on the received feedback information to compensate for imbalance among the congestion measures of the downstream servers. In an overload control technique, the first server utilizes feedback information received from at least one downstream server to generate a blocking message for delivery to a user agent.

Network load balancing and overload control

Delay-sensitive burst scheduling in a network is carried out through communications between source and destination nodes. A distributed scheduler at each destination node selects timeslots for burst arrivals from requesting source nodes, irrespective of timeslot selections made by distributed schedulers at other nodes.

Method of burst scheduling in a communication network

A method of operating a packet network includes the step of selecting one of a plurality of candidate gateways to connect a multimedia communication session between the packet network and a TDM network. The packet network has a source node of the multimedia communication session, and the TDM network has a destination of the multimedia communication session. The candidate gateways interconnect the packet network and the TDM network. The selecting step includes comparing end-to-end congestions for bearer traffic between the source node and different candidate gateways of the plurality.

Intelligent media gateway selection for multimedia communication sessions

A method is provided for activation of Idle-mode Signaling Reduction (ISR) for a given mobile terminal based on behavior of the given mobile terminal, in a manner to minimize signaling load between the mobile terminals and the wireless network. The methodology operates to dynamically enable or disable ISR on a per-terminal basis, using the session arrival rate and timeout data for the mobile terminal. Based on these mobile-terminal behavioral criteria, and preferably using an iterative process at long time scales, the methodology operates to optimize the decision thresholds used to turn ISR on or off.

Method for improved idle-mode signaling in wireless communication networks

An apparatus includes a time-domain wavelength-interleaved optical network that connects a plurality of edge nodes. Each of the edge nodes is configured to receive optical communications from others of the edge nodes on an associated wavelength-channel. The number of edge nodes is larger than the number of the wavelength-channels.

Multi-hop optical communication network

A method includes receiving a request for admission of a new communications session to a data network. The requested admission is such that the new communications session is granted a first set of one or more bandwidth usages of a resource of the network in response to being admitted. Each of one or more admitted communications sessions concurrently has a granted set of one or more bandwidth usages of the resource. The method includes admitting the new communications session to the data network in response to a sum over each set of the largest bandwidth usage of the resource in the each set being larger than an effective input bandwidth of the resource. Each admitted communications session is able to access a bandwidth of the resource up to any of the one or more bandwidth usages in its own one of the sets.

Admission control of sessions with preference lists

Flow control techniques are disclosed for use in data communications networks such as those implementing a time-domain wavelength interleaved network (TWIN) architecture or other suitable architectures. Such techniques may provide for congestion management and scheduling for asynchronous traffic. For example, in one aspect, a technique comprises collecting information at a node of an optical-based communications network, wherein at least a portion of the collected information pertains to congestion in the optical-based communications network, and adjusting a transmission rate of the node in response to at least a portion of the collected information such that the node operates under a substantially stable transmission schedule with respect to asynchronous data bursts. The transmission rate adjusting step/operation may further comprise adjusting the transmission rate such that the node operates under a substantially fair transmission schedule. The node may operate under a random transmission schedule.

Flow control and congestion management for random scheduling in time-domain wavelength interleaved networks

A method is provided for providing protection for connectionless signals in a telecommunications network comprising a plurality of nodes. A first protection path is generated from each of the nodes to a destination node. A second protection path is generated from each of the nodes to the destination node. The second protection path is distinct from the first protection path. Protection traffic is routed along one of the protection paths to the destination node.

Method and system for providing a protection path for connectionless signals in a telecommunications network

In the operation of an MPLS network or the like, a network node receives a plurality of packets assigned to a label switched path (LSP) which exits the node on a link bundle. The node forwards the received packets such that packets assigned to the LSP are distributed over two or more distinct component links of the bundle.

System and method of network traffic assignment on multiple parallel links between IP/MPLS routers

A method for scheduling data bursts from origin to destination nodes of a communication system involves selecting a yet-unscheduled, feasible node pair for scheduling of a burst therebetween; selecting a timeslot from a finite timeslot sequence; scheduling the burst for the selected timeslot; and repeating the preceding steps to exhaustion of unscheduled demand or of feasible node pairs. The feasibility of a node pair is conditioned on the avoidance of collisions with already-scheduled bursts, taking the various origin-to-destination propagation delays into account.

Method of scheduling bursts of data for transmission in a communication network

In a system and method of optical communication, optical signals are generated in multiple wavelength channels. Each optical signal is passively transported from an origination node of a network to a destination node. The destination node is determined by the signal wavelength. For at least some signals, the passive transport includes transport through a branch point of the network, such that the signal wavelength determines the output branch through which the signal is routed. In certain embodiments, signals are generated according to a schedule devised to substantially prevent the concurrent arrival, at the same destination node, of signals having the same wavelength but coming from different origination nodes.

System and method for WDM communication with interleaving of optical signals for efficient wavelength utilization

A system and method of protection switching in a communications network that makes more efficient use of resources in the network and reduces the loss of data traffic carried by the network. The communications network includes an established working path and an established protect path interconnecting a source node and a sink node. The source node and the sink node are configured to perform label switching on the network. The source node receives primary data traffic and secondary data traffic over one or more communications paths. In a fault-free condition, the source node sends the primary data traffic over the working path to the sink node, and sends the secondary data traffic over the protect path to the sink node. In the event of a fault or switchover condition in the working path, the source node performs traffic trunk and label merging on the primary and secondary traffic, and sends the merged traffic over the protect path to the sink node.

Protection switching in a communications network employing label switching

A system is provided for providing a protection path for connection-oriented signals in a telecommunications network comprising a plurality of nodes. The system includes a source node, a destination node and a penultimate node. The source node is operable to transmit traffic. The destination node is operable to receive traffic from the source node. The penultimate node is operable to receive traffic from the source node, to transmit traffic directly to the destination node, to designate one of the nodes as a reflector and to generate a first segment of a protection path from the penultimate node through the reflector to the destination node.
