A system and method for updating files in a file system that is linked to a database system which stores metadata pertaining to the files. Changes intended to be made to an original file are written to a replacement file, and when the user is ready to move the changes onto the original file, a database transaction is commenced. If the transaction commits, the replacement file is renamed to the original file and the file security attributes of the original file are applied. Otherwise, the rename operation does not take place, thereby ensuring consistency between the metadata in the dbms system and the file system data that is represented by the metadata.

Disclosed are embodiments of a system for optimizing query processing in a federated information system. The system may be used to identify alternative query plans in a simulated environment and to calculate cost estimates associated with the alternative query plans, based not only on database statistics and query statements, but also based on workload and processing latencies associated with specific data source and with the federated information system as a whole. In addition the calculated cost estimates may also factor in data source availability and reliability. The system may use the alternative query plans and the associated cost estimates to influence query processing in a federated information system by feeding to the federated information system query plans that allow for cost-efficient query plan-level load distribution, cost-efficient query fragment plan-level load distribution, and load distribution based upon quality of service cost constraints.

A method, storage server, and computer readable medium for off-loading star-join operations from a host information processing system to a storage server. At least a first and second set of keys from a first and second dimension table, respectively are received from a host system. Each of the first and second set of keys is associated with at least one fact table. A set of locations associated with a set of foreign key indexes are received from the host system. A set of fact table indexes are traversed. At least a first set of Row Identifiers ('RIDs') associated with the first set of keys and at least a second set of RIDs associated with the second set of keys are identified. An operation is performed on the first and second sets of RIDs to identify an intersecting set of RIDs. The intersecting set of RIDs are then stored.

A system, method, and program storage device implementing the method, for integrating data in a database management system, wherein the method comprises grouping data sources and replicas of the data sources that provide analogous data into a common logical domain; writing application queries against the common logical domain; selecting a correct set of replicas of the data sources and a query-execution strategy for combining a content of the correct set of replicas of the data sources in order to answer the application queries according to query-cost-based optimization; selecting a correct set of data sources according to run-time constraints; shielding the application queries from changes to the data sources by dynamically binding the application queries against the correct sets of data sources and replicas of the data sources; and processing the application queries by generating an optimum query result based on the steps of grouping and shielding.

A Resource Management and Reservation System (RMRS) for managing and reserving storage bandwidth, is a platform independent middleware layer that provides an interface to applications, their database management systems, or some other higher level data management systems like ADRS which does data management on behalf of the applications. RMRS is highly relevant in hosted environments where one or more applications may be run on behalf of multiple customers each with a unique service level agreement with the Service Provider. Through its interface to the aforementioned applications, RMRS allows each application or an application side management system to communicate expected future storage access requirements (e.g., periodic access for backups). The interface also allows applications to request urgent storage access (e.g., recovery actions may be requested without being planned ahead of time).

A method masking data failures, when a master copy of data is unavailable comprises storing a single master copy of data and a replica copy of the data; writing to the master using a middleware component; and reading from either the master or the replica using the middleware component, when the master copy is unavailable. When the master is unavailable, the writes are stored in a table located in the middleware component as stored write requests, in which the stored write requests comprise UDI's to be made to the master. The reads are also performed from the table and the replica when the master is unavailable. When the master becomes available, the stored write requests are propagated to the master. Thus, the middleware allows the writes to run during times when the master is unavailable.

A system and method of lightweight asynchronous data replication that avoids the need for any persistent store at the replication source or communication channel, and is independent of the underlying data formats, wherein the method of data replication comprises replicating deltas from a source, embedding replication tracking information in the replicated deltas, wherein the tracking information comprises a timestamp and a sequence number, and applying deltas at a target. The tracking information is used to ensure that each delta is applied exactly once. In the event of a crash in the system, the target analyzes the tracking information to determine which deltas have been applied, and requests retransmission of replicated data from the source starting from the earliest unapplied delta. The source and target are treated as only delta producers and consumers, and as such the invention is applicable to replication between arbitrary data source formats.

System and method for asynchronous data replication without persistence for distributed computing

A system and method to automatically and dynamically optimize available resources to meet application data availability and business objectives. In one embodiment, a backup and data recovery system continually and dynamically adjust to the backup and recovery or restore process depending on the customer's environment, workload, and business objectives. Acceptable tolerance of downtime due to recovery and backup impacts the customer's business or system operation. From this high-level business requirement, the present system determines the backup and recovery plan details. The present system accepts application data availability policies based on business objectives, and devises, executes and refines a resource optimal backup and recovery strategy required to deliver the desired quality of service in the environments that have dynamically changing application workloads, business objectives, and hardware/software infrastructure technologies. In addition, the present system performs backups outside blocked windows to minimize the impact on the customer's system.

System and method for automatically and dynamically optimizing application data resources to meet business objectives

The database management system manages one or more databases. A transaction processing system provides transaction control for one or more of the databases managed by the database management system, wherein the transaction processing system assigns a recoverable, unique sequence number whenever a request is made by an application.

A method, an apparatus, a system, a computer program product, and a computer program are disclosed for maintaining consistency of object content () and metadata () related to the object () in a loose transaction model, preferably using SQL Mediated Object Manipulation (SMOM), for object and meta-data updates. The related meta-data () and a reference to the object () are stored in a table of a database. The object is stored externally to the database in an object store. The reference is used to obtain a handle for directly accessing or manipulating the external object. A version number embedded in the handle is then obtained. The embedded version number is then compared with a version number of a latest committed version of the externally stored object to determine if the handle refers to a current version of the externally stored object. Next, the last modification timestamp of the file is compared with the last modification timestamp of the latest committed version, in order to detect uncommitted updates. A mismatch indicates that stale data is being referenced, and in that situation an appropriate error is returned.

Method of maintaining data consistency in a loose transaction model

A client-server computing system is disclosed for supporting relational database records and linked external files. The system comprises one or more servers for storing external files, and a plurality of clients interlinked by a network. Each of the servers and certain of the clients have respective filter layers for controlling servicing of application requests relating to external files, for any application command of a protected class relating to an external file made to a client having a filter layer, the respective client filter layer determines the presence of a valid user token associated with the command, then passes the command to a server across the network. The server filter layer, if it recognizes the command, causes the command to be serviced by the server. However, for any application command of a protected class relating to an external file made to a client not having a filter layer, the command will be forwarded across the network to the server filter layer of a server holding the external file and the server filter layer will block the command from being serviced.

A computer system updates a data object that is maintained in data storage external to a database management system (DBMS), after receiving an update request from a DBMS client for the data object, by first scheduling the update request with the DBMS to provide access to the external data object, then initiating a subtransaction in the DBMS for the update request, updating the data object with an in-place update action at the external data storage to thereby produce an updated data object and also updating the DBMS metadata of the data object, next appending information relating to type and time of the update action in an object version table, and then executing a backup operation of the updated data object. This permits update-in-place operations on the external data object, under supervision of the DBMS. The system thereby supports update-in-place operations on external data with access control, backup and recovery, and transaction consistency in accordance with a database management system, while avoiding large copy operations that would consume network resources.
