A device receives information regarding allocation of an enhanced dedicated channel radio network temporary identifier (E-RNTI) to user equipment in a cell forward access channel (Cell_FACH) state, and receives information regarding a state change associated with the user equipment. The device determines that the E-RNTI can be released based on the state change, and provides, to another device, a request to release the E-RNTI in response to the state change and so that the E-RNTI can be used by other user equipment.

Handling identifiers for enhanced dedicated channels in cell forward access channel states

According to an example method performed in a High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) environment, a first device generates a High Speed Downlink Shared Channel (HS-DSCH) data frame that includes a plurality of blocks of packet data units. A first block of the plurality of blocks includes packet data units of a first length, and a second block of the plurality of blocks includes packet data units of a different, second length. The first device transfers the HS-DSCH data frame to a second device. The HS-DSCH data frame further includes, for each block of the plurality of blocks, a first information element that indicates a length of the one or more packet data units in the each block, and a second information element that indicates a quantity of packet data units in the each block.

A method of operating a telecommunications node () through which packets of differing priority are conveyed comprises receiving plural data packets from a source external () to the node, the plural data packets including both ordinary packets and a priority packet; and storing the plural data packets in a queue structure () in order of arrival so that the priority packet is read out of the queue structure before the ordinary packets are read out of the queue structure (), thereby expediting output of the priority packet from the node relative to the ordinary packets.

Prioritization of data packets

In a flat Radio Access Network (RAN) architecture, each base station () shares Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (MBMS) control plane information with its neighboring base stations (), by sharing with neighboring base stations () the same control plane information that the base station () transmits via its air interface (). For example, in a Wideband CDMA embodiment, where each base station () in a flat WCDMA RAN () is referred to as a NodeB&#xf7;, one NodeB&#xf7; shares MBMS control plane information with one or more neighboring NodeB+s. Such sharing allows a given base station (-) not only to broadcast MBMS configuration information for its own cells (-), but also to broadcast such information for one or more neighboring cells (--) that operate under control of one or more neighboring base stations (--). Thus, a user equipment (UE) () camping in the given base station's cell (-) is provided with the information needed to acquire the MBMS user plane in its current cell (-) and in one or more of the neighboring cells (--). In this manner, the UE ()&#x2014;also referred to as a mobile terminal&#x2014;can receive MBMS transmissions from multiple base stations (---), for selective and/or soft combining. UE reception performance is thereby improved and base stations () in a flat RAN () generally can send MBMS transmissions at a lower power.

Methods and apparatuses relating to multimedia broadcast multicast services

A first device () in a High Speed Downlink Packet Access environment () may generate a High Speed Downlink Shared Channel data frame () that includes a group of packet data units, where a first packet data unit of the group of packet data units is of a different length than a second packet data unit of the group of packet data units. Using session signaling, a multimedia session with plural media data streams is initiated between the mobile terminal and a remote host coupled to a packet data network. The mobile terminal is coupled to the packet data network and to a multimedia system that provides multimedia session services by way of an access point. A plurality of packet access bearers is established between the mobile terminal and the access point to transport corresponding ones of the media data streams between the mobile terminal and the access points. The media binding information is created for each media data stream. The media binding information associates each media data stream in the session to one of the media packet access bearers and is used to provide session-based control of each of the media packet access bearers. Different example techniques for generating/providing the media information are disclosed.

Media binding to coordinate quality of service requirements for media flows in a multimedia session with IP bearer resources

A protocol proxy relationship is established between a non-enabled host and a protocol-enabled router or other node in a multimedia session including a mobile communications network. A mechanism is provided that allows a non-enabled mobile terminal to communicate a protocol proxy request with a protocol-enabled node along an end-to-end path between the mobile terminal and a remote host. A mechanism is further provided to install information in the protocol enabled node so that it can function as the protocol proxy for the non-enabled mobile terminal.

Method and apparatus for establishing a protocol proxy for a mobile host terminal in a multimedia session

A signaling bearer quality of service profile is pre-established and configured in various nodes in an access network. This is a new quality of service class designed to meet the needs of signaling bearers in multimedia sessions. A message requesting a bearer to support a communication between a mobile terminal and an access point to a packet data network is generated. That message includes a signaling quality of service indicator, which when detected, causes a bearer to be established between the mobile terminal and the access point in accordance with the pre-established signaling quality of service profile. The pre-established signaling quality of service profile typically includes low delay and low bit error rates in addition to high priority and accommodation of bursty traffic patterns. A signaling usage indicator may also employed to implement a standard set of minimum signaling bearer capabilities.

Signaling quality of service class for use in multimedia communicatations

A method of filtering and gating data flow in a QoS connection between a remote host and user equipment in a packet data network using policy control mechanisms includes a remote host initiating an application in an application server and a corresponding session between the remote host and the user equipment (&ldquo;UE&rdquo;) via the application server. The UE requests, to a gateway support node (&ldquo;GGSN&rdquo;) of the network, establishment of a network bearer service between the UE and the remote host. A corresponding policy control function (&ldquo;PCF&rdquo;) in a policy server receives, from the application server, filtering data derived from session data received by the application server during the session. The GGSN interrogates the corresponding PCF in the policy server to initialize a gate using policy control filtering data at the GGSN. The gate then filters the data flow in the QoS connection according to the policy control filtering data.

Application influenced policy

The present invention provides flexible radio access and resource allocation in a Universal Mobile Telephone System (UMTS). A UMTS Terrestrial access network (UTRAN) in response to a radio access bearer service request, flexibly and efficiently allocates resources necessary to support a communication with a mobile radio. The UTRAN includes plural base stations for communicating with mobile radios over a radio/air interface using radio channel resources allocated by a radio network controller connected to the base stations. External network service nodes interfacing with external networks communicate with the UTRAN over a radio access network interface. The UTRAN provides a radio access bearer service to the external network service nodes, and radio access bearers are dynamically assigned to radio channel resources by the UTRAN. When establishing each bearer, the UTRAN flexibly maps or allocates the radio access bearer to physical transport resources through the UTRAN and radio channel resources over the radio/air interface. In an example embodiment, the transport between nodes and the UTRAN includes an ATM connection, and a radio channel over the air interface includes one or more CDMA spreading codes. The mapping is based on one or more parameters including for example one or more quality of service parameters and/or current traffic conditions. In addition, if the one or more parameters changes during the life of the connection, the connection may be switched to a more appropriate channel type.
