Systems, methods, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer-readable media, for determining an operational state of one or more solenoids of well equipment are disclosed. A characterization and diagnosis apparatus can determine characterization measurements for a solenoid. The characterization measurements can be obtained during a characterization mode of the solenoid based on drive voltages and temperatures. The characterization and diagnosis apparatus can determine sampled measurements for the solenoid during an operational diagnosis mode of the well equipment. The characterization and diagnosis apparatus can compare the characterization measurements to the sampled measurements to diagnose the operational state of the solenoid.

A method and system for a pipeline inspection gauge. The method may include disposing a pipeline inspection gauge in a pipeline. The pipeline inspection gauge may comprise one or more modules attached to each other and an orifice. The pipeline inspection gauge may further include a generator disposed within at least one of the one or more modules, a turbine connected to the generator through a shaft, and at least four wheels connected to an outer surface of at least one of the one or more modules. The method may further include moving the pipeline inspection gauge using an at least partially opened orifice, wherein force from fluid flow in the pipeline is transferred through the orifice to the pipeline inspection gauge to create movement and creating a positive pressure pulse by closing the at least partially opened orifice.

A method to perform an in-situ analysis of a downhole communication system includes generating a transmission waveform of a transmission signal, and amplifying the transmission waveform by a digital to analog converter and an amplifier that are configured to modify a property of the transmission waveform. After generating the transmission waveform, the method includes transmitting the transmission waveform to a tool of a communication system. The method further includes filtering a response waveform from the tool, the response waveform being a waveform of a signal transmitted by the tool in response to receiving the transmission waveform. The method further includes performing an in-situ analysis of the tool based on the response waveform.

Aspects of the subject technology relate to systems and methods for configuring links or switches that connect analog circuit elements. These analog circuit elements may be connected to a plurality of sensors that may sense different types of data. For example, these sensors may sense acoustic data, electromagnetic (EM) data, temperature, pressure, and possibly other metrics that may be located in a wellbore of an oil or gas well. These analog circuits may be configured as needed (e.g., on-the-fly) to perform optimized types of computations that may include the solving of differential equations. Examples of analog circuits that may be incorporated into a sensing system include yet are not limited to operational amplifier circuits or memcomputing devices, other components, or combinations thereof. Configured analog circuits may be coupled to digital electronics that perform other functions.

Digitally reconfigurable analog computations for solving optimization problems

The disclosure provides a downhole power system that includes a combination of different power sources, which includes downhole power generators and rechargeable batteries that can be recharged downhole, a downhole bus and a bus power controller that manages the distribution of power from the different power sources to downhole tools connected to the downhole bus, such as tools of a BHA. The different power sources can be strategically positioned along the downhole bus/BHA. An example of a downhole distributed power system includes: (1) a downhole bus, (2) different power sources connected to and strategically positioned on the downhole bus, and (3) one or more controllers to perform operations that includes managing distribution of power, from the different power sources, to downhole tools connected to the downhole bus, wherein the different power sources include one or more power generators and one or more rechargeable batteries that are chargeable downhole.

An apparatus, method, and system for determining the propagation delay for a downhole wire and/or for monitoring the integrity of a downhole wire. The apparatus includes a first tool component and a second tool component spaced apart from the first tool component and communicatively coupled by a wire. The tool components include impedance altering devices configured to alter, for a predetermined period of time, either the source impedance at a first termination point of the wire and/or the load impedance at a second termination point of the wire sufficient to generate a characteristic signal reflection upon the transmission of a signal along a length of the wire between the first tool component and the second tool component.

A method for calibrating a downhole tool may comprise disposing a downhole tool in a borehole, transmitting a signal from a master module disposed on the first device to a module disposed on the second device, transmitting a return signal from the module to the master module, receiving the return signal with the master module, measuring a tone enabled delay for the signal to travel from the master module to the module, and determining a time delay of a return signal to travel from the module to the master module. A well measurement system may comprise a downhole tool. The downhole tool may further comprise a first device and a master module disposed on the first device, wherein the master module may comprise a master transmitter and a master receiver. In examples, the downhole tool may further comprise a second device and a module disposed on the second device.

A downhole turbine may include a stator disposed in a turbine housing, a rotor disposed between the stator and the turbine housing and wherein the rotor includes an outer housing, a gap that separates the stator and the rotor, wherein the gap is oil filled, and one or more blades disposed on the outer housing between the turbine housing and the rotor. The downhole turbine may further include a compressible medium attached to the outer housing between the stator and the outer housing, wherein the compressible medium is separated from the stator by the gap, and one or more magnets attached to an inner surface of the compressible medium, wherein the one or more magnets are separated from the stator by the gap.

Torque to linear displacement for downhole power regulation

A high-speed current sensing circuit configured to measure current associated with switching devices of a power generation system. The circuit includes logic for turning one or more corresponding switching devices off before failure, so as to limit the duty cycle of the one or more corresponding switching devices. In the event of a failure, the system is configured to continue operating and generating energy to complete or at least continue performing the service despite the failure.

A method for downhole communication between multiple sets of sensors along a single wire bus includes communicating between a first set of sensors through the single wire bus. The first set of sensors include legacy sensors communicating at a legacy communication frequency. The method also includes communicating between a second set of sensors through the single wire bus. The second set of sensors communicates at a second communication frequency an order of magnitude greater than the legacy communication frequency. Further, the method includes communicating between a third set of sensors through the single wire bus. The third set of sensors communicates at a third communication frequency an order of magnitude greater than the legacy communication frequency.

A logging tool and a method for in-situ, independent calibration of receiver amplifier electronics separately from transmitter electronics. A logging tool can perform in-situ gain and phase calibration on one or more receiver assemblies, each consisting of at least a receiver amplifier electronics and a receiver antenna, and based on a calculated gain and phase of the receiver assembly, determine the true antenna amplitude and phase associated with a measurement made by the receiver assembly. The logging tool can perform in-situ crosstalk measurement and calibration, by determining a crosstalk matrix for all of the receiver assemblies and for each receiver assembly, removing the crosstalk interference from the measurement made by the receiver assembly.

In-situ gain/phase calibration and characterization of downhole receiver electronics

A single layer antenna path profile is provided. An antenna assembly for the single layer antenna profile includes a bobbin having a cylindrical body defining an outer radial surface, an inner radial surface, and a central axis. The antenna assembly also includes one or more channels defined in the outer radial surface. In some aspects, each channel is defined by a continuously curved inner surface having a constant radius. In some aspects, the inner surface extends more than 180 but less than 360 and thereby defines an opening in the body. The antenna assembly also includes a coil including a wire wrapped about the bobbin and received within the one or more channels. In some aspects, an arcuate portion of the wire extends through the opening such that a portion of the wire protrudes out of the channel.

A downhole system includes a first module having a transmitter that transmits at least one sync control signal. The system also includes a second module having a sync module with a direct digital synthesizer (DDS). The sync module analyzes the at least one sync control signal to identify at least one of a sync frequency and a sync phase. The DDS adjusts a local receiver clock based on the identified at least one of a sync frequency and a sync phase.

Methods and systems with downhole synchronization based on a direct digital synthesizer (DDS)

The disclosure presents a process for determining an initial gain of a gamma detector located within a wellbore of a well system. The technique can utilize the subterranean formation characteristics at the gamma detector. The process can sweep, at a step value, across a determined high voltage range. At each sweep step, gamma events can be detected and counted over a detection time interval. The collected gamma events can then be utilized to perform an in-situ plateau test from which a high voltage can be determined, e.g., knee of the plateau curve. The determined high voltage can then be used as the initial gain. Additional fine gain control functions can be executed to further adjust the gain. In an alternative aspect, the collected gamma events can be utilized to perform diagnostics to infer faults or issues with the gamma detector assembly while it is down-hole.

A bottom hole assembly includes a single wire bus, a legacy sensor coupled to the single wire bus, and at least one high frequency communication sensor coupled to the single wire bus. The high frequency communication sensor injects a high frequency signal alternating between high frequency synchronization pulses and high frequency data signals onto the single wire bus. A first high frequency pass filter coupled between the at least one high frequency communication sensor and the single wire bus is also included. The high frequency pass filter passes the high frequency signal to the single wire bus from the high frequency communication sensor. The bottom hole assembly includes a first high frequency blocking filter coupled between the legacy sensor and the single wire bus. The high frequency blocking filter blocks the high frequency signal from the high frequency communication sensor from disturbing a legacy signal at the legacy sensor.
