A novel and useful system and method of quantum stochastic rounding using silicon based quantum dot arrays. Unitary noise is derived from a probability of detecting a particle within a quantum dot comprising position based charge qubits with two time independent basis states |0> and |1>. A two level electron tunneling device generates quantum noise and includes a reservoir of particles, a quantum dot, and a barrier used to control tunneling between the reservoir and the quantum dot. A detector outputs a digital stream corresponding to the probability of a particle being detected. Controlling the bias applied to the barrier controls the probability of detection. The probability density function (PDF) of the output unitary noise is controlled to correspond to a desired probability. Unitary noise is used to perform stochastic rounding by controlling the bias applied to the barrier according to a remainder of numbers to be rounded.

A novel and useful system and method of generating quantum unitary noise using silicon based quantum dot arrays. Unitary noise is derived from a probability of detecting a particle within a quantum dot array structure comprising position based charge qubits with two time independent basis states |0&#x3e; and |1&#x3e;. A two level electron tunneling device such as an interface device, qubit or other quantum structure is used to generate quantum noise. The electron tunneling device includes a reservoir of particles, a quantum dot, and a barrier that is used to control tunneling between the reservoir and the quantum dot. A detector circuit connected to the device outputs a digital stream corresponding to the probability of a particle of being detected. Controlling the bias applied to the barrier controls the probability of detection. Thus, the probability density function (PDF) of the output unitary noise can be controlled to correspond to a desired probability. The unitary noise can be used in stochastic rounding by controlling the bias applied to the barrier in accordance with a remainder of numbers to be rounded.

System and method of generating quantum unitary noise using silicon based quantum dot arrays

A novel and useful time mode analog to digital converter (ADC) that employs injection locking to overcome the nonlinearities of the voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). The oscillator's frequency is modulated using injection locking rather than varying its supply voltage. The oscillator is injection locked with a vector modulated signal, the frequency of which is derived from the oscillator itself. The output of the oscillator is modulated by the input voltage V(t). The output of the modulator is at the same frequency as the oscillator with an envelope (i.e. amplitude) determined by V(t). This signal is injected back into the oscillator at one or more points. The frequency of the oscillator &#x3c9;(t) changes in order to satisfy the Barkhausen criteria for oscillation. Alternatively, each stage of a ring oscillator (RO) incorporates its own mixer (i.e. modulator) and a vector modulated signal is injected into all stages of the RO simultaneously yielding uniform phase resolution across the RO, enhancement of the VCO gain, and improved figure of merit (FoM).

Injection locked time mode analog to digital converter

A novel and useful digitally controlled injection-locked RF oscillator with an auxiliary loop. The oscillator is injection locked to a time delayed version of its own resonating voltage (or its second harmonic) and its frequency is modulated by manipulating the phase and amplitude of injected current. The oscillator achieves a narrow modulation tuning range and fine step size of an LC tank based digitally controlled oscillator (DCO). The DCO first gets tuned to its center frequency by means of a conventional switched capacitor array. Frequency modulation is then achieved via a novel method of digitally controlling the phase and amplitude of injected current into the LC tank generated from its own resonating voltage. A very linear deviation from the center frequency is achieved with a much lower gain resulting in a very fine resolution DCO step size and high linearity without needing to resort to oversampled noise shaped dithering.

Wideband digitally controlled injection-locked oscillator

A novel and useful apparatus for and method of predistortion calibration and built-in self testing (BIST) of a nonlinear digitally-controlled radio frequency (RF) power amplifier (DPA) using subharmonic mixing. The RF power amplifier output is temporarily coupled into the frequency reference (FREF) input and the phase error samples generated in the phase locked loop (PLL) are then observed and analyzed. The digital predistortion and BIST mechanisms process the phase error samples to calibrate and test the DPA in the transmitter of the Digital RF Processor (DRP). The invention enables the characterization of nonlinearities, the configuration of internal predistortion, as well as the testing of the transmitter's analogRF circuitry, thereby eliminating commonly employed RF performance testing using high-cost test equipment and associated extended test times.

Predistortion calibration and built in self testing of a radio frequency power amplifier using subharmonic mixing

An embodiment of the present invention provides transmitter having a phase locked loop that has a dynamically controllable loop bandwidth. A transmit modulator is coupled to the PLL for performing vector modulation in response to transmission symbols. Each transmission symbol comprises an amplitude signal and a phase signal. A controller is coupled to the PLL and to the transmit modulator and is operable to detect when a criteria of the transmission symbols crosses a threshold and to adjust loop bandwidth in response to crossing the threshold. The criteria of the transmission symbols may be a function of the amplitude signal or a function of the phase signal, and may be the amplitude signal, a first derivative of the amplitude signal, a second derivative of the amplitude signal, a square of the amplitude signal, a derivative of the amplitude signal squared, the phase signal, or a derivative of the phase signal.
