Dye diffusion images can be produced by a rapid process in which a first sheet material which contains at least one light sensitive silver halide emulsion on a layer support and at least one color producing compound capable of releasing a diffusible dye on development and/or a second, light insensitive sheet material containing a layer of binder in which is incorporated a salt of a weakly acidic organic compound and a strong organic base is or are moistened with an aqueous liquid and the two sheet materials are then heated to 40.degree.-120.degree. C. with their coated surfaces in contact and subsequently separated.

An image to be printed in a CRT or video color printer is sensed to generate red, blue and green signals respectively representing a characteristic of the image in red, blue and green. The signals are processed in a matrix circuit to generate a luminance signal. The red and blue signals are subtracted from the luminance signal in operational amplifiers to obtain unadjusted difference signals. Each of the unadjusted difference signals is multiplied by an adjusting factor which is established using variable resistors and functions to provide level adjustment. The adjusted difference signals obtained in this manner are subtracted from the luminnce signal in respective operational amplifiers to yield modified red and blue signals. The modified red and blue signals are processed together with the luminanace signal in a second matrix circuit to generate a modified green signal. Control of color saturation may be achieved simply and inexpensively by adjusting the variable resistors and thereby changing the adjusting factor which determines color saturation.

In a process and an apparatus for the exposure and development of photographic images according to the dye diffusion process a monosheet material is used, the laminated structure of which is divided by a layer which is impermeable to light but permeable to moisture into a photosensitive side of the sheet for image-wise exposure and a non-photosensitive side for observation and supplying the activator or developer solution. The said monosheet material is exposed image-wise in the dark and the photosensitive side then sealed in a light and moisture proof manner in a development apparatus in which the non-photosensitive side of the monosheet lies open and is exposed to an activator in daylight so that the image formation takes place visibly. Once the image quality has been achieved the development is stopped by removing the activator and by subsequent rinsing. The monosheet is dried in a conventional manner but only on one side.

In order to develop color-photographic images by the color diffusion process, a first cylindrical container (1) for receiving the aqueous-alkaline working solution (4) is provided having a threaded bushing (7) on its upper edge and a contact safeguard (5) under the bushing. A second container (2) for receiving the image-wise exposed mono-sheet material (10) to be developed is also provided which has a threaded core (9), by which it may be screwed into the threaded bushing (7) of the first container (1) and may be tightly sealed therewith. Development takes place according to the overturning method and may be carried out in a lightroom.

Color prints are prepared in the form of retained images by the dye diffusion transfer process using a photographic recording material comprising in that order a transparent layer support, a light-sensitive element containing at least one silver halide emulsion layer and a non-diffusing color-providing compound associated thereto, a light-reflecting opaque layer and a mordant layer. The recording material is subjected to imagewise exposure through the transparent layer support. During development a colored moiety is released from the color-providing compound in imagewise distribution and transferred to the mordant layer. Silver and silver halide is removed by bleaching and fixing. The colored color-providing compounds retained in the light-sensitive element in imagewise distribution complementary to the transferred colored moiety form the color image visible through the transparent layer support against the light-reflecting background of the opaque layer. The mordant layer prevents contamination of the developer by diffusible dyes.

In a color photographic recording material for the dye diffusion transfer process a transparent layer support, a light sensitive element, a light-reflecting opaque layer and an image-receiving layer form in that order a non-disconnectable assembly of layers and the light-sensitive element contains at least one silver halide emulsion layer and associated therewith an electron donor compound and a non-diffusing reducible color-providing compound that when reduced liberates a diffusible dye under alkaline development conditions.
