A solid state drive (SSD) with improved techniques for testing power loss protection (PLP) capacitors and a method for testing PLP capacitors of SSDs is disclosed. In one embodiment, the SSD includes a memory controller and one or more non-volatile memory devices and a volatile memory device coupled to the memory controller. The SSD also includes a PLP capacitor configured to supply a first voltage to the memory controller, the one or more non-volatile memory devices, and the volatile memory device in the event of a power loss or failure of the SSD. In one embodiment, the PLP capacitor is further configured to increase the first voltage to a second voltage prior to testing the PLP capacitor. In another embodiment, the memory controller is configured to reduce a volume of data stored in the volatile memory device prior to testing the PLP capacitor.

Techniques for testing PLP capacitors

Solid-state mass storage devices and methods of operation thereof include a solid-state mass storage device that may have a capacitor-based power supply module configured for providing power to the mass storage device. In one embodiment, the mass storage device has a first mode of operation wherein a primary power supply provided by a host system provides power to the mass storage device sufficient for its operation and provides power to the capacitor-based power supply module to recharge the module, and a second mode of operation wherein power is provided to the mass storage device from both the primary power supply and the capacitor-based power supply module. The mass storage device may be capable of providing power from the capacitor-based power supply module to the mass storage device after a voltage level of the capacitor-based power supply module falls below an under voltage lock out level.

Solid-state mass storage devices with capacitor-based power supply and methods of operation

Methods, systems, and non-transitory computer readable media for advanced power management for serial advanced technology attachment (SATA)-based storage devices are disclosed. According to one aspect, the subject matter described herein includes a method for advanced power management of SATA-based storage devices. The method includes, at a SATA-based storage device having a controller, a non-volatile memory for storing data, and a communication interface for communicating with a host, receiving from the host a command to enter a quiescent mode. In response to receiving the command to enter a quiescent mode, the storage device enters a quiescent mode. The storage device receives from the host an indication that the storage device should enter a low power mode. In response to this indication, the storage device puts at least a portion of the non-volatile memory into a low power mode while maintaining at least a portion of the controller in normal power mode. The storage device optionally puts a physical layer interface of the storage device into a low power mode for additional power savings.
