Super miniature TFF and TFP active modular optoelectronic components are based on an optical interface that is three times less than the size of SFF/SFP components and about six times smaller than an SC based component and thus provides a density that is three times higher than LC interfaces. The invention provides substantially smaller photonic devices that can be used with substantially smaller optoelectronic components and combines the new optoelectronic components with the new smaller miniature interconnect systems such as the Push-Release type using the same interface. The new interface can be used with sub-millimeter or larger diameter ferrules. Photonic devices are mounted in a close proximity of the active end of a fiber stub thereby avoiding the need for lenses and active alignment and enabling use in active hermetic or non-hermetic subassemblies.

High density active modular optoelectronic device for use with push-release mechanism and method for using same

The connector system provides two identical hermaphroditic housings, which accomplish a reliable connection of standard optical fiber connectors without the use of an adaptor. The connector system includes a first housing mounted to a first printed wiring board and a second housing mounted to a second printed wiring board. Each housing supports an optical fiber connector therein. Each housing includes an inner member and an outer member. Springs are provided between the inner and outer members to provide biasing of the housings in the mating direction of the optical connectors.

Hermaphroditic fibre optical connector system

A sealed optical fiber connector assembly includes a connector housing that is uniquely configured to cooperate with a cable crimp tail and one or more terminal fiber optic connectors. The connector housing has a first opening for securely retaining the terminal fiber optic connectors. An interior passage connects the first opening to a second opening at the housing's other end. The interior passage allows the crimp tail to pass through the housing. The second opening forms a shoulder so that the crimp tail, after being pushed through the first opening and passage, can be rotated and seated against the shoulder. A cable seal securely holds the crimp tail against the shoulder. This provides a sealed and substantially stronger cable attachment. The connector housing is part of removable optical connector that provides environmental sealing when mated to a corresponding adapter.

Industrial optical fiber connector assembly

An adapter is mountable to a bulkhead, panel, circuit box, circuit board or other substrate, and receives a fiber optic connector. The adapter can be swiveled or rotated relative to the bulkhead, panel, circuit box, circuit board or other substrate, thereby providing for enhanced cable management. The adapter may include a gasket that reduces electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Swivel adapter

An adapter assembly is provided for mounting in an opening in a panel. The assembly includes a permanent housing and a mounting bracket. The mounting bracket has latch arms for securing the permanent housing within the panel opening and mating arms for receiving an interchangeable housing to be mated with the permanent housing. A dust cap can be provided to protect the permanent housing when no interchangeable housing is mated to the permanent housing. The dust cap can also be used as a removal tool to remove an interchangeable housing from the permanent housing.

Connector panel mount system

A fiber optic connector assembly includes an outer connector housing defining an optic axis in a through passage. A first key is disposed in the passage at a given position angularly about the axis. An inner optical fiber plug terminates an optical fiber and is disposed in the passage and includes a second key movably positionable about the periphery of the plug to different selected positions of rotational adjustment for the plug. The second key is fixable at any selected position on the plug and is lockable with the first key on the housing to fix the angular position of the plug relative to the housing and, thereby, fix the rotational position of the optical fiber angularly of the optic axis.

A method of cross-connecting or reorganizing individual optical fibers of a plurality of fiber optic ribbons include the steps of providing a substrate having an adhesive thereon with a mixing zone within the boundaries thereof. A plurality of individual optical fibers are routed onto the substrate to form a plurality of fiber optic input ribbons, reorganizing the fibers in the mixing zone, and forming a plurality of fiber optic output ribbons. At least some of the output ribbons have fibers from more than one of the input ribbons. The input and output ribbons are coated on the substrate outside the mixing zone to hold the routed fibers in ribbon form, leaving at least portions of the fibers in the mixing zone uncoated. The coated ribbons are stripped from the substrate with the uncoated fibers from the mixing zone being loose. A holding device is placed about at least the uncoated loose fibers between the input and output ribbons.

Method of cross-connecting optical fibers

A ribbon holder is provided for a plurality of fiber optic ribbons. The holder includes a body having an interior rectangular through passage in which the plurality of fiber optic ribbons can be placed in a side-by-side parallel arrangement. A cover is provided on the body to allow access to the through passage whereby the ribbons can be placed into the passage thereof. An exterior datum surface is provided at one side of the body to identify one side of the interior rectangular through passage, whereby the ribbons can be placed in the passage in specific orientations relative to said datum surface.

Holding assembly for cross-connected optical fibers between plural fiber ribbons

An alignment system is disclosed in a connector ferrule for a fiber optic cable which includes at least one optical fiber. A ferrule body receives the cable and includes a fiber passage for receiving the optical fiber. A pin passage in the ferrule body is spaced from the fiber passage for receiving an alignment pin projecting from the ferrule body to align the body with an appropriate complementary connecting device. An alignment bushing is disposed in the pin passage for directly receiving the alignment pin. The outside dimensions of the bushing are smaller than the inside dimensions of the pin passage to define a space therebetween. A filler adhesive is applied in the space between the outside of the alignment bushing and the inside of the pin passage. Therefore, the bushing can be precisely aligned in the pin passage from exteriorly of the passage, and the filler adhesive can fix the bushing in that precise alignment interiorly of the passage.

Alignment system in a connector ferrule for a fiber optic cable

A method is disclosed for fabricating a connector ferrule for a fiber optic ribbon cable which includes a plurality of generally parallel optical fibers in a line. A ferrule body is provided with a fiber passage which is elongated in cross-section to receive the line of optical fibers. A jacket is removed from an end portion of the fiber optic ribbon cable to expose the line of optical fibers. The ferrule body is placed in a fixture. The cable is placed in the ferrule body with the exposed line of optical fibers located in the fiber passage, and with distal ends of the exposed fibers projecting outwardly of the ferrule body. The exposed distal ends of the fibers are located on the fixture to precisely align the fibers relative to each other in the fiber passage. A filler adhesive is applied in the fiber passage about the exposed fibers to fix the fibers in the fiber passage while the fibers are held by the fixture in their precise alignment.

Method of fabricating a fiber optic connector ferrule

A fiber optic connector assembly is adapted for terminating at least one optical fiber of a fiber optic cable. The assembly includes a two-part elongated housing for receiving the fiber optic cable and defining a forward mating end and a rear end. The two parts of the housing extend along a substantial length of the housing through the rear end thereof. A ferrule is disposed within the forward end of the two-part housing for terminating the optical fiber. The two parts of the housing are juxtaposed and are adapted for receiving a crimp ring thereabout at the rear end of the housing. A pair of transversely spaced, complementarily engageable latches are operatively associated between the two housing parts. The pair of latches are disposed inside the outer profile of the housing and straddling opposite sides of the cable.

Fiber optic connector assembly

A connector ferrule is disclosed for a fiber optic ribbon cable which includes a plurality of generally parallel optical fibers in a line. A ferrule body receives the cable and includes a fiber passage which is elongated in cross-section to receive the line of optical fibers that are exposed by removing the jacket at an end portion of the fiber optic ribbon cable. A filler adhesive is disposed in the elongated fiber passage for fixing the fibers in the fiber passage in proper spaced relationship. Therefore, the line of fibers can be precisely aligned and relatively spaced from exteriorly of the fiber passage, and the filler adhesive can fix the fibers in that precise alignment and relative spacing interiorly of the fiber passage.

Fiber optic connector ferrule

An apparatus is provided for receiving a fiber optic connector along an optic axis. The apparatus includes a body having an open mating end and a mounting flange. The open mating end is adapted for receiving the fiber optic connector on the optic axis. The mounting flange includes a first mounting structure for facilitating mounting the apparatus to a support structure. A shield assembly is mounted on the body and includes a movable shield for closing and opening the open mating end of the body. A second mounting structure is operatively associated with the first mounting structure for facilitating mounting the shield assembly to the body.

Fiber optic adapter with protective shield

A fixture is disclosed for use in fabricating a connector ferrule for a fiber optic cable which includes a plurality of generally parallel optical fibers. The fixture includes a base, with a receptacle on the base for receiving and properly positioning a ferrule body. A cable locator is provided on the base at one side of the receptacle for positioning the cable inserted in the ferrule body, with exposed end portions of the optical fibers projecting from the ferrule body at an opposite side of the receptacle. A fiber aligner is provided on the base at the opposite side of the receptacle for aligning the exposed end portions of the optical fibers relative to each other and relative to the properly positioned ferrule body.
