A method and system for maintaining ambient monitoring capability for a communication device. The method includes using a first target identity to identify the communication device in a first ambient monitoring session with an ambient monitoring device. The method also includes, while in the first ambient monitoring session, receiving, by an electronic processor of the communication device, a communication service state change notification for the first target identity. The method also includes, while in the first ambient monitoring session, determining a second target identity to identify the communication device in a second ambient monitoring session that has not been established. The method also includes, while in the first ambient monitoring session, transmitting, to the ambient monitoring device, the second target identity.

Systems and methods for maintaining an ambient monitoring session

A method to provide ambient listening on target devices is shown. The ambience listening can be initiated by the listener or by the target device. When a console initiates an Ambience Listening (AL) call regarding a target and the target is logged into more than one device, the PTT server presents the console with a list of all concurrent devices of that user. The console is presented with additional information regarding the target, such as the location, role selected by the user on each device, and the user's operational status on each device. The operational status includes, for example, an emergency state. This enables the console to setup one or more ambience listening session with one or more appropriate devices.

A communication system is provided for controlling group affiliation in a wireless communication system, wherein a group management server determines, or modifies, a set of one or more group affiliation parameters and group de-affiliation parameters associated with a mobile device based on capabilities of another mobile device and/or a set of one or more group affiliation parameters and group de-affiliation parameters associated with the another mobile device. The mobile devices may be mobile devices of a same user or may be mobile devices of different users. In other embodiments of the present invention, in response to receiving a request to initiate a group call involving a group that includes multiple mobile devices of a same user, the group management server may select only one of the multiple mobile devices to participate in the group call and arrange for only the selected mobile device to participate in the group call.

A method for providing presence notification for PTT chat group communications includes a server receiving, from a communication device of a member of a chat group, a session initiation message to start a session for the PTT chat group. The session initiation message includes a member-selected priority. The server generates an event notification message that includes an indication that the chat group is active and has been assigned a priority, and sends the event notification message to communication devices of at least some of the other chat group members. Additionally, where a group priority has been assigned to the chat group, the group priority is assigned to the session. Otherwise, the member-selected priority is assigned to the session.

Methods and apparatus are provided for allocating resources in a distributed environment, such as a packet network, based on a network assessment. One or more resources are allocated to a request in a distributed environment by identifying one or more potential resources to handle the request; obtaining a network connection assessment between the requester and the one or more potential resources; and assigning at least one of the one or more potential resources to the request based on the evaluation. The network connection assessment can assess, for example, a quality of a network connection between the requester and each of the one or more potential resources or evaluate a topology of the network connection between the requester and each of the one or more potential resources. The one or more resources can be selected based on a score assigned to each of the one or more potential resources.

A classification mechanism automatically aligns time-sensitive data streams to sequences (schedules), according to information in the packets or other information and classification criteria specified by a human network administrator, a sequence agent, an application program or otherwise. When a packet arrives at a first sequence-aware switch along a path, the packet is aligned to a new or existing sequence. When a new sequence is established, appointments are reserved at sequence-aware switches along the path. The packet is placed in a queue, based on its classification. When the packet reaches the head of the queue, at that queue's appointment time, the switch forwards the packet along the path. If possible, appointments have been reserved at subsequent switches along the packet's path, so the packet can be forwarded through the subsequent switches without delay. Packets that do not match any classification criteria are handled on a best-effort basis.
