A panoramic annular lens system (PAL), a unitary video camera and a PC-based software system that unwraps a 360&#xb0; video image into a seamless, distortion free horizontal image image in real time. The PAL system of the preferred embodiment has a 360&#xb0; horizontal field of view and a 90&#xb0; vertical field of view in a 40 mm diameter compact package. The invention is not limited to any particular type of lens system. In fact, there are numerous lens systems for providing a 360&#xb0; panoramic view. The video camera may be a CCD or CMOS based device having a pixel resolution of either 1280&#xd7;1024 (high resolution) or 720&#xd7;480 (NTSC). The unwrapping system is a radiometric ray tracing program carried out using a computer's graphics card capabilities to produce highly efficient regional transformation while minimizing software overhead. The result is real time, high resolution 30 fps conversion from a spherical distorted image to a flat panoramic image in Cartesian coordinates.

A highly efficient luminaire. The luminaire includes a light source that emits light. The emitted light is redirected by a light transformer having a curved circular reflective interior surface, the reflective interior surface reflecting the light in a predetermined pattern. A substantial amount of light being may be reflected close to an axis coincident with a radial line defining a radius of the circular reflective interior surface. Additionally, a substantial amount of light may be reflected in a pattern with low divergency or parallel with an axis of the light transformer. The light is transmitted to the exterior of the luminaire by an optical window.

A luminaire flush with a horizontal surface and comprising a housing, an optical window, a light source, and an optical element. The housing has an internal cavity disposed beneath the horizontal surface and defines an opening disposed adjacent the horizontal surface. The optical window, substantially flat and transparent, has a surface that overlays the housing opening. The light source, disposed within the housing cavity, provides a spatial light distribution pattern which defines an optical axis that is disposed substantially perpendicular relative to the optical window surface. The optical element, also disposed within the housing cavity, redistributes light rays emitted by the light source along preselected angles relative to the horizontal surface.

A nonimaging beam combiner and collimator. The nonimaging beam combiner and collimator can include at least two light sources that emit light of the same wavelength through a focus point and a nonimaging element that receives the light of the same wavelength after the focus point and collimates the light at the same wavelength through the atmosphere. The at least two light sources can include fiber light sources, optical fibers, gradient index lenses, fiber lasers or laser diodes. The collimator can include an input surface, a paraboloid surface located adjacent to the input surface, a conical surface located adjacent to the paraboloid surface, and an ellipsoid surface located adjacent to the conical surface and located on an opposite side of the collimator from the input surface. The paraboloid surface can include a total internal reflection surface.

Beam combiner

A system and method for real time optical processing of images by simultaneous combining the variable set of images in selected spectral intervals. Spectral images at a plurality of spectral intervals are collected if needed. According to criteria established in a particular application, coefficients for an optimal combination of selected spectral intervals are calculated. Positive and negative images are continuously captured through the optical filter whose transmission spectrum adjusted to positive and negative coefficients of the optimal combination. Negative images are subtracted from positive images and a sequence of resulting optimized images is displayed in real time.
