The present invention discloses a process for producing a formed carbon products which comprises the steps of mixing a pitch or a pitch precursor and at least one kind of polymer becoming compatible with the pitch or the pitch precursor by heat-treating and having an aromatic ring and at least one sulfur, oxygen or nitrogen atom in its repeating unit; of heat-treating the mixture to convert it to a raw material pitch and thereafter of at least forming, infusibilizing and carbonizing and which succeeded to simplify a production apparatus and to reduce an energy comsumption by reducing an infusibilizing time without deteriorating physical properties of the carbon products.

Process for producing formed carbon products

The present invention discloses a process for producing a raw material pitch for carbon materials containing a slight amount of ash, the comprising steps of adding aluminum chloride to naphthalene or its derivative as a catalyst; polymerizing said naphthalene or its derivative at a temperature of 100.degree. to 330.degree. C., adding water to the polymer, under stirring if necessary; maintaining the mixture in an emulsified state for a predetermined time under stirring, breaking an emulsion, removing a water layer from the polymer.

Catalytic process for producing raw material pitch for carbon materials

Disclosed herein is a process for producing a substantially quinoline-soluble and optically anisotropic pitch for carbon materials, which process comprises the steps of (1) polymerizing naphthalene by heating at a temperature of not higher than 330.degree. C. for 0.5 to 100 hours in the presence of Lewis acid catalyst, (2) removing said catalyst from the reaction mixture, (3) subjecting said reaction mixture to thermal treatment at a temperature of 390.degree. to 450.degree. C. for 1 to 5 hours under a pressure of not less than an atmospheric pressure so as to produce neither a quinoline-insoluble pitch nor optically anisotropic pitch, thereby carrying out aromatization of the polymerizate of naphthalene, and (4) heating the thus treated material at a temperature of 350.degree. to 380.degree. C. for 3 to 10 hours under a reduced pressure while flowing an inert gas, thereby removing the volatile components for said material, and the pitch produced by the process.

A process for preparing carbon fibers wherein carbon fibers are prepared from the mesophase-pitch containing not more than 80% by weight of a quinoline-insoluble component and showing, under a polarization microscope, more than 70% of optically anisotropic region, comprising the steps of subjecting a mesophase-pitch showing a viscosity of 10 to 100 poise at a temperature of spinning of 330.degree. to 450.degree.
