A clutch drum is configured to reduce the weight of a clutch drum while keeping the mechanical losses of the clutch drum in check. The clutched drum houses several clutch plates and has a cylindrical part and a plurality of the teeth that are arranged circumferentially around the inside of the cylindrical part and extend in the axial direction. The teeth have tooth cusps and tooth flanks on both rotational-direction sides. Bottom lands are formed on the inside surface of the cylindrical part between the teeth in the axial direction. The outside recesses are formed on the portions of the outside surface of the cylindrical part that correspond to the teeth and the inside recesses are formed on the inside surfaces of the teeth

Clutch drum

A frictionally engaging clutch disc assembly includes portions which define alignment holes which are employed during assembly of the clutch disc assembly. A tooling jig having alignment pins are engaged in the alignment holes such that the various portions of the clutch disc assembly arc accurately positioned with respect to one another during construction of the clutch disc assembly.

A clutch disc assembly is provided with a support structure and friction generating members that provide generally constant friction generation, even when misalignment occurs between adjacent members. The clutch disc assembly 1 includes a hub 2, a fourth friction washer 19, a clutch plate 3 and a second coil spring 7. The fourth friction washer 19 is fixed to the hub 2 and has a tapered surface 19a. The clutch plate 3 has an inner peripheral edge tapered portion 3c which is abutted against the tapered surface 19a and disposed on the outer periphery of the hub 2. The second coil spring 7 couples the hub 2 to the clutch plate 3 in a circumferential direction.

Manufacturing method for clutch disc subassembly

A clutch disc assembly (1) is provided with lubrication members (11a, 11b) to reduce the wear of the parts which contact the large coil springs (7) disposed within the clutch disc assembly (1). Plates (4) and (5) and a separated flange (3) are configured to rotate relative to each other. Raised portions (4a) and (5a) of the plates (4) and (5) correspond to a window (3c). Each of the large coil springs (7) extends in a circumferential direction with respect to the clutch disc assembly (1). Each large coil spring is confined within a corresponding the window (3c) of the separated flange (3) and further between the raised portions (4a) and (5a) of the plates (4) and (5). Lubricant-impregnated members (11a, 11b) are provided on a portion of respective sides of the separated flange (3), and are contactable with the large spring coil (7). In one alternate embodiment, a portion of plates (105) and (106) is provided with a plurality of minute apertures (140). The plates (105) and (106) are then provided with a surface hardened layer (130) to reduce wear due to friction.

A clutch disc assembly holding a diaphragm spring using a pair of wire rings clamped by bent tabs of a clutch cover or stud pins, and having a coned disc spring for controlling an increase in a releasing load due to wear of facings of a clutch. An annular coned disc spring urging an outer peripheral portion of the diaphragm spring to a side opposite to the clutch disc is disposed between a pressure plate and the diaphragm spring. An annular support plate is provided and its inner peripheral portion is held between the bent tabs of the clutch cover and the pair of wire rings. The coned disc spring is held by an outer peripheral portion of the support plate and the outer peripheral portion of the diaphragm spring in an elastically deflected condition.
