Provided is discharging device including liquid droplet discharging unit configured to discharge liquid droplet containing a light-emitting particle that undergoes luminescence in response to irradiation of light, light irradiating unit configured to irradiate liquid droplet discharged by liquid droplet discharging unit with the light, light detecting unit configured to detect luminescence by light-emitting particle contained in liquid droplet in response to irradiation of the light emitted by light irradiating unit, and average particle number calculating unit configured to determine presence/absence of light-emitting particle in liquid droplet based on whether light detecting unit has detected luminescence by light-emitting particle, and calculate average particle number, which is average, among all liquid droplets discharged, in number of light-emitting particles contained per liquid droplet, based on ratio of liquid droplets containing no light-emitting particle relative to all the liquid droplets discharged, the ratio being calculated based on the presence/absence of light-emitting particle.

Discharging device and discharging method

A particle counting apparatus is provided that includes: a droplet discharger configured to discharge a droplet containing at least one luminescent particle capable of emitting light upon receiving light; a light irradiator configured to irradiate the droplet discharged by the droplet discharger with light; at least one light receiver configured to receive light emitted by the at least one luminescent particle irradiated with the light emitted by the light irradiator; and circuitry configured to count luminescent particles contained in the droplet based on the light received by the at least one light receiver, the circuitry being configured to measure a presence or absence of the luminescent particles contained in the droplet; and to measure a number of the luminescent particles contained in the droplet.

Particle counting apparatus, particle counting method, and particle containing sample

An optical control device includes a photonic crystal and a line-defect waveguide formed in the photonic crystal wherein the optical control device is capable of guiding, through the line-defect waveguide, a light having a wavenumber larger than a wavenumber corresponding to an anti-intersection of an even-mode band and an odd-mode band, the even-mode band and odd-mode band being a waveguide band of the line-defect waveguide, wherein the even-mode band of the line-defect waveguide includes two or more inflection points in a wavenumber region larger than a wavenumber corresponding to an intersection of the even-mode band and said odd-mode band, the optical control device guiding a light having a frequency in the vicinity of the inflection point.

Optical control device

A light deflection element has a pair of transparent substrates; a chiral smectic C phase liquid crystalwith a homeotropic alignment filled between the pair of transparent substrates; and at least an electric field applying devicefor activating an electric field in the liquid crystal. Because a chiral smectic C phase liquid crystal is used, the problems of the conventional light deflection element, such as high cost, light loss, large size, and optical noise etc. due to its complicated structure, can be greatly improved. The conventional low response time due to the smectic A phase or the nematic liquid crystal is improved, thereby the high-speed response is possible.

Light deflection element, light deflection device and image display device

An image display apparatus includes an indicating element which modulates or emits light as a pixel in accordance with image information. A displacement unit optically displaces a position of the pixel for each of two or more sub-fields constituting an image field corresponding to the image information. A projection unit enlarges the pixel and projects an enlarged pixel on a screen. A pixel-profile deformation unit changes an optical intensity profile of the pixel.

Image display apparatus

An optical delay element including a photonic crystal line defect optical waveguide is disclosed that has a large group refractive index and has small or nearly constant wavelength dispersion of the group refractive index in a wide wavelength region for practical use. The optical delay element includes a line defect optical waveguide formed in a photonic crystal structure, and the volume of the line defect optical waveguide is less than the volume of a single line defect optical waveguide. Thereby, the waveguide band of the line defect optical waveguide has two zero points in the third order dispersion curve of the line defect optical waveguide, and the sign of the third order dispersion curve is inverted near the zero points. Therefore, the waveguide band of the line defect optical waveguide is modified, and this enables expansion of the wavelength region having a large group refractive index, small wavelength dispersion of the group refractive index, and small wavelength dispersion of the speed of optical pulses.

Optical delay element

A light control element includes a substrate, an optical coupling component formed on the substrate by a photonic crystal structure, and a variable refractive index part provided in a part of the photonic crystal structure so as to divide The optical coupling component into two regions, wherein a traveling direction of a light is changed at an interface of the regions by changing a refractive index at the variable refractive index part such that there is caused a reflection for at least one wavenumber of the light.

A display medium includes a marking ink composition, and two plates for holding the marking ink composition therebetween, at least one of the plates having a transparent portion. A method for printing an image on an image receiving material includes the steps of depositing the above-mentioned marking ink composition on the image receiving material, and removing the dispersion medium X and the dispersion medium Y from the image receiving material. There is also described an image printed on an image receiving material by the above-mentioned printing method.
