A system for collecting and catalytically cleaning exhaust gases from an engine which is particularly suited for an arrangement wherein the catalyst is in close proximity to the exhaust ports of the engine. Exhaust pipes are employed having common walls extending longitudinally therethrough to separate and convey exhaust gases from two separate cylinders to a common manifold. The manifold is arranged to provide a mixing of the exhaust from a plurality of cylinders and to direct that homogeneous flow to the catalyst. A restriction is provided at the outlet of the manifold chamber and before an expansion chamber into the catalyst. This outlet and the expansion chamber are designed to provide maximum efficiency in distribution of gases to the catalyst and also provide minimum gas flow disruption and back pressure.

Exhaust system

A catalytic converter includes ring-shaped cushion members of differing bulk densities at each axial end of a catalyzer carrier, a first cushion member which is supported by a casing of the converter being of lesser bulk density than that of a second cushion member which is interposed between said first cushion member and the adjacent axial end of said catalyzer carrier.

Catalytic converter

A device for supporting a cylindrical catalyst block includes a tubular cushion member mounted within a casing and encircling the catalyst block. An end member fixed within the casing carries an annular cushion. A ring is interposed between the annular cushion and the end face of the catalyst block. Interengaging parts are provided for preventing rotation of the ring with respect to the casing.

Support apparatus for catalyst block

The converter casing includes a hollow cylindrical body in which a monolithic catalyst substrate is supported by a wire-mesh cushioning element. Secured to the casing body are a pair of holding fixtures which are each fitted with an end cushioning element engageable with the adjacent end face of the catalyst substrate to hold the latter against axial displacement. The casing body includes a smaller-diameter portion, at least one larger-diameter portion and a sloped shoulder portion interposed therebetween. The holding fixtures are fixed to the larger-diameter or other end portions of the casing body in spaced relation to the cushioning element held between the catalyst substrate and the casing body. Such casing structure reduces the danger of the catalyst substrate being damaged or broken under vibration or shock to a minimum thereby to enhance the durability of the substrate and enables realization of a particularly compact and inexpensive catalytic converter.

An intake manifold for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine contains main intake passages leading from a main distribution chamber for supplying lean mixture to each cylinder. The intake manifold also has auxiliary intake passages leading from an auxiliary distribution chamber for supplying a rich mixture to each cylinder. Engine coolant is circulated through the intake manifold to act as heating means for the rich mixture and for part of the lean mixture. Another part of the lean mixture is not heated.

Intake mixture heating device for internal combustion engine

An exhaust purifying system for a multi-cylinder four-cycle internal combustion engine operating on an intake mixture leaner than stoichiometric employs first preliminary reaction chambers receiving exhaust gases from ports connected to cylinders having successive firing order. The exhaust gases are then delivered from said first preliminary reaction chambers to a single second preliminary reaction chamber and then to a catalytic reaction chamber containing oxidative catalysts of base metals, and then finally to an oxidative reaction chamber. The intake mixture for the engine is heated from exhaust gases in the oxidative reaction chamber. This particular succession of chambers causes the temperature of the exhaust gases to increase to above 800.degree. C.

Exhaust purifying system for internal combustion engines

An exhaust reaction chamber assembly is provided for a four-cylinder in-line internal combustion engine having two pairs of exhaust ports, the ports in each pair being closely spaced. The assembly includes an exhaust manifold having two preliminary reaction chambers each connected to receive exhaust gases from one of said pairs of exhaust ports, respectively. A main reaction chamber is provided within the exhaust manifold and two curved passages each connect one of the preliminary reaction chambers to the main reaction chamber, respectively, each passage curving for about 90.degree.. The passages have aligned outlets so that the exhaust gases from each passage are directed toward the other passage. The gases are then directed perpendicular to the inlet in an elongated direction through the main reaction chamber. In one embodiment, the aligned outlets are spaced apart within the main reaction chamber, and in a modification the aligned outlets are formed in a single pipe having a side window opening into the main reaction chamber. A restriction may be placed between each passage and the preliminary reaction chamber to which it is connected, in order to increase residence time.

Exhaust reaction assembly for internal combustion engine

An engine exhaust reaction chamber system having an inner exhaust reaction chamber surrounded by an outer exhaust reaction chamber, the system having a partition plate means for preventing exhaust flow bypass through the outer exhaust reaction chamber positioned within the annular space of the outer exhaust reaction chamber. A guide plate may also be positioned within the annular space of the outer exhaust reaction chamber in order to separate the outer exhaust reaction chamber into first and second outer exhaust reaction chamber passages. Further, a middle exhaust reaction chamber may be positioned between the inner and outer exhaust reaction chambers, the middle exhaust reaction chamber also being provided with a partition plate in order to prevent exhaust flow bypass through the middle exhaust reaction chamber and being provided with a guide plate separating the middle exhaust reaction chamber into first and second middle exhaust reaction chamber passages.

Separate exhaust pipes each receive exhaust gases from a plurality of cylinders of an internal combustion engine. The exhaust pipes merge into a common outlet delivering exhaust gases into a first reaction chamber and then into a second reaction chamber enclosing the first reaction chamber. The second reaction chamber also encloses the exhaust pipes and outlet. The cross section areas of the exhaust pipes, outlet and continuing passageway through the first reaction chamber are substantially the same in effective cross section area to avoid temperature drop in the exhaust gases due to expansion. Oxygen-rich exhaust gases from the engine are held at a high temperature for long residence time to oxidize HC and CO and thereby minimize the quantity of these pollutants discharged into the atmosphere.

Exhaust reaction apparatus for multi-cylinder internal combustion engine

An internal combustion engine exhaust manifold has a lateral opening through which exhaust gases may heat intake mixtures for the engine. The exhaust manifold comprises a thick wall housingg enclosing a thin wall liner, the liner having inlet tubes receiving exhaust gases from the engine exhaust ports, and having a discharge pipe. The liner is secured in the lateral opening of the housing so that its inlet tubes and discharge pipes may move by differential expansion. Internally threaded sockets fixed to the liner extend into the housing opening and the sockets project through clearance openings in a stationary support ring fixed to the housing opening. Threaded fasteners are received in the sockets and a heat shield is mounted within the liner to prevent exposure of the ends of the threaded fasteners to the hot exhaust gases within the liner.

An exhaust manifold for a multi-cylinder engine employs three concentric exhaust reaction chambers. Exhaust inlet pipes convey hot exhaust gases from the exhaust ports of the engine directly into the innermost reaction chamber. The concentric reaction chambers extend substantially at right angles to the exhaust inlet pipes which are parallel. Concentric tubes encircle the exhaust inlet pipes and each is connected to one of the concentric exhaust chambers. The flared portions of the exhaust inlet pipes engage in surface contact with the correspondingly flared portions of the tubes. End members having concentric shoulders engage cylindrical shells which define the exhaust reaction chambers. Bolted spacers are positioned substantially midway of the length of the shells and space them in concentric fashion.

Exhaust manifold for internal combustion engine

An exhaust manifold for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine is provided with preliminary oxidation reaction chambers, each of which receives exhaust gases from exhaust port liners each serving a pair of adjacent cylinders of different exhaust timing. These preliminary oxidation reaction chambers each communicate downstream with a main oxidation reaction chamber subdivided into a plurality of concentric subchambers. The subchambers enclose the preliminary oxidation reaction chambers and exhaust gas inlet pipes. Combustion of unburned hydrocarbons (HC) is principally accomplished in the preliminary oxidation reaction chambers, and the exhaust gases are maintained at relatively high temperature and retained for a sufficient period of time in the subchambers to accomplish oxidation of the unburned carbon monoxide (CO).

An exhaust gas reaction chamber has an inner chamber surrounded and encompassed by an outer chamber, and a 'U' shaped pipe extends through both chambers and has a single feed port positioned within the inner chamber. Both ends of the pipe receive exhaust gases discharged through two paired exhaust passages discharging through a single port. A thick wall housing surrounds the reaction chamber but is spaced from the thin metal walls which form the reaction chamber. The outer chamber heats a lean intake mixture supplied to the main combustion chambers of the engine and heats a rich mixture suppled to auxiliary combustion chambers of the engine.
