A method and apparatus for electromagnetic continuous or semicontinuous casting of metals and alloys. A variable coolant application system is used to control the rate of heat extraction from the casting to properly position the solidification front at the surface of the casting without otherwise influencing the containment process through modification of the magnetic field.

Electromagnetic casting method and apparatus

A process and apparatus are disclosed for removing inclusions and inclusion clusters from a molten metal or alloy stream prior to casting. In the process, the molten metal is passed through a flotation box having a primary chamber and a secondary chamber located within the primary chamber. The primary chamber is provided with entry and exit portions, one on each side of the secondary chamber so that the stream of molten metal or alloy is directed to flow into the primary chamber, flowing beneath the secondary chamber and out the exit portion. Inclusions and inclusion clusters float to the surface of the molten metal or alloy in the secondary chamber prior to the exiting of the molten metal or alloy stream from the primary chamber through the exit portion for supply to a casting station.

Process and flotation box for inclusion removal

An apparatus for casting metals wherein the molten metal is contained and formed into a desired shape by the application of an electromagnetic field. A control system is utilized to minimize variations in the gap between the molten metal and an inductor which applies the magnetic field. The gap or an electrical parameter related thereto is sensed and used to control the current to the inductor.

Electromagnetic casting apparatus

A duplex impedance shield is disclosed which is used to effect improved shape control in the electromagnetic casting of molten metal or alloy. The shield is provided with a primary loop which substantially surrounds the upper portion of an electromagnetic casting station and a secondary loop attached thereto which serves to enlarge the air gap enclosed by the shield thereby increasing the impedance of the shield. The secondary loop of the shield may be provided with shunt means which can be manipulated to vary the inductance and/or the resistance of the shield thereby varying the impedance of the shield.
