A liquid crystal display includes substrates facing each other, plural pixels, a liquid crystal layer between the substrates, and a pixel electrode in each pixel. The pixel electrode defines: a first stem extending in a first direction, a second stem extending in a second direction, first edge bars extending in the first direction and connected to the second stem, second edge bars extending in the second direction and connected to the first stem, and plural branches extending from the first or second stem and inclined with respect to the first or second directions and terminating spaced apart from the first and second edge bars. Distal ends of each of the first edge bars are spaced apart from distal ends of each of second edge bars, and in the second direction, each of the first edge bars overlaps lines along which the second edge bars respectively lengthwise extend.

Liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal display device includes first and second substrates facing each other and including pixels, a pixel electrode disposed on the first substrate to be provided in each of the pixels, and a common electrode disposed on the second substrate, where the pixel electrode includes first unit electrodes, each of the first unit electrodes includes four domains, which are arranged in two rows in a first direction and two columns in a second direction, the four domains include first, second, third, and fourth domains of a corresponding first unit electrode, each of the first unit electrodes further includes a first slit, which is an opening defined along boundaries between the first through fourth domains, and the common electrode includes second slits, which are openings defined along outer sides of each of the first unit electrodes.

A liquid crystal display includes a first panel including a first substrate, a first electrode which is disposed on the first substrate and which includes a stem unit including a horizontal stem and a vertical stem dividing a pixel into domains, a branch unit including branch electrodes and extending from at least one stem of the stem unit in one direction, and an external bundling electrode unit connected to an end of at least one of the branch electrodes and disposed along an edge of the pixel, a first slit pattern which is defined in the branch unit, a second slit pattern which contacts the vertical stem and is disposed parallel to the horizontal stem, a third slit pattern which contacts the horizontal stem and is disposed parallel to the vertical stem, and a protrusion unit which is disposed on an outer circumference of the external bundling electrode unit.

A liquid crystal display includes a pixel electrode which includes a first subpixel electrode and a second subpixel electrode, a first insulating substrate and a second insulating substrate which faces the first insulating substrate, a common electrode which overlaps the pixel region, where the first subpixel electrode includes a first main unit electrode and a first sub unit electrode which is electrically connected to the first main unit electrode and smaller in area than the first main unit electrode, the second subpixel electrode includes a second main unit electrode, and a first opening part which overlaps the first main unit electrode, a second opening part which overlaps the second main unit electrode, and a third opening part which overlaps the first sub unit electrode and has a different shape from those of the first opening part and the second opening part are defined in the common electrode.

Liquid crystal display having increased degree of freedom in design

A liquid crystal display includes: a first panel including a first electrode; a second panel including a second electrode; and a liquid crystal layer between the first and second panels. The first electrode includes: a central electrode disposed in a central region of a pixel; an outer electrodes extending along a side of the central electrode; and a connection electrode which connects the outer electrode and the central electrode. A slit pattern is defined in the first electrode around the central electrode, and a liquid crystal control pattern is defined in the first electrode in a corner region of the pixel. Horizontal and vertical incisions, which divide the first electrode into a plurality of domains, are defined in the second electrode, an end portion of the outer electrode is disposed to correspond to the corner region, and the end portion of the outer electrode extends farther than the central electrode.

A liquid crystal display includes a first panel including a first electrode which includes a central electrode disposed in a central region of a pixel, a micro-branch part extending in a direction from at least one side of the central electrode, a peripheral electrode connected to an end of part of the micro-branch part, and a corner pattern provided in a corner region of the pixel, a second panel including horizontal and vertical incision parts which divide the micro-branch part, the central electrode and the peripheral electrode of the first electrode into a plurality of domains and a second electrode which is divided corresponding to plurality of domain regions, and where in the first panel, the peripheral electrode adjacent to the corner pattern is disposed on at least one of an edge region of the pixel in a direction parallel to the horizontal or vertical incision part.

A liquid crystal display includes a first substrate, a first electrode which is disposed on the first substrate, and which includes a stem part for dividing a pixel into a plurality of domains, a plurality of micro branch parts extending in one direction from at least one stem of the stem part, and a peripheral bundle electrode connected to an end of at least one of the micro branch parts and disposed along an edge of the pixel, a first panel including protrusions arranged along an outer circumference of the peripheral bundle electrode and projected in the direction vertical to the first substrate, a second substrate, a second panel including a second electrode which is disposed on the second substrate and which faces the first electrode, and a liquid crystal layer which is interposed between the first panel and the second panel and which includes liquid crystals.
