A method of selecting a set of beams to be monitored by a User Equipment (UE) in a telecommunication network comprises the steps of receiving measurement data comprising measurements of qualities of beams observed by said UE, where said beams originate from at least one access node (AN) to the UE and from at least one other AN to the UE; retrieving at least one measurement data from a particular UE that matches the received measurement data, where the historical database comprises historical measurement data comprising measurements of qualities of beams observed by UE's in said telecommunication network over time; selecting a set of beams to be monitored by said UE based on the retrieved measurement data and based on subsequent measurement data of the particular UE over time in the historical database; and transmitting said selected set of beams to be monitored to said UE.

Methods, a data split unit () and a data collection unit (), for controlling data transmission over two connections used for communication of data from the data split unit to the data collection unit operating in dual connection mode. The data split unit obtains (2:4) a receive split ratio between the two connections as perceived at the data collection unit, and adapts (2:5) a transmit split ratio for distributing data over the two connections based on the receive split ratio. The transmit split ratio may be adapted to reduce or eliminate a difference between the transmit split ratio and the receive split ratio. The method includes: identifying plural frequency sub-band and beam pairings for which the received signal quality is correlated; and, for each frequency sub-band and beam pairing within a group of plural frequency sub-band and beam pairings for which the received signal quality is correlated, evaluating the periodicity of a received signal quality analysis process, and determining whether or not to adjust the periodicity.

According to certain embodiments, a method in a network node is provided for adaptive initial synchronization beam sweep transmission. The method includes transmitting a plurality of initial synchronization beams with at least two different beam sweep cycles. At least one beam sweep cycle is an exhaustive beam sweep cycle and at least one beam sweep cycle is an optimized beam sweep cycle. The exhaustive beam sweep cycle covers all of a serving area of the cell and the optimized beam sweep cycle covers a subset of the serving area.

In one aspect of the teachings herein, a radio network node advantageously adapts the transmission duration of a synchronization signal with respect to transmission of the synchronization signal in different directions. For example, the radio network node uses a shorter transmission duration in beam directions that are associated with better reception conditions and a longer transmission duration in beam directions that are associated with poorer reception conditions. As a consequence of varying the transmission duration according to received-signal qualities known or expected for the different directions, the radio network node can shorten the overall time needed to complete one synchronization-signal transmission cycle and use less energy, as compared to using a more conservative, longer transmission time in all beam directions.

Method and apparatus for synchronization signal transmission in a wireless communication system

Techniques for determining beam-sweeping patterns for synchronization signals transmitted in a region by several access nodes in a network, where each access node is connected to a corresponding array of antenna elements. An example method includes modeling a total power function for the power transmitted in the synchronization signals, as a factor graph having a plurality of check nodes and variable nodes, each check node corresponding to a virtual wireless device in the region and each variable node corresponding to an available beam for an access node. The virtual wireless devices are emulated so as to implement quality-of-service constraints on synchronization signals received by the virtual wireless devices. An iterative message-passing algorithm, such as a min-sum algorithm, is applied to the modeled total power function, to determine a sequence of power levels, for each access node, for sweeping synchronization signal beams, so as to minimize the total power function.

Methods and apparatus for establishing a communication link between a first user equipment and at least one other user equipment in a radio communication cell using a radio frequency spectrum divided into a plurality of channels. The first user equipment comprises a tuner configured to tune a communication unit to channels of a channel sequence vector in order. The channel sequence vector comprises at least a partial vectorization of a symmetric Toeplitz matrix formed from a set of the plurality of channels. The communication unit is configured, at each channel, to receive link data for establishing a communication link with the at least one other user equipment. A link establisher is configured to establish a communication link with the at least one other user equipment over the tuned channel if the link data is received.
