A fiber optic connector module includes a ferrule terminated to at least one optical fiber. The ferrule includes a front mating end and a rear end. A pin keeper is engaged with the rear end of the ferrule. At least one alignment pin extends from the pin keeper through the ferrule and projects beyond the front mating end of the ferrule for operative association with a complementary connecting device. A pusher member is spaced behind the pin keeper. A spring is sandwiched between the pusher member and the pin keeper. The spring has opposite ends compressible between the pusher member and the pin keeper. The fiber optic connector module also includes a housing having a forwardly facing abutment surface for engaging a rearwardly facing abutment surface on the ferrule. The forwardly facing abutment surface on the housing is convexly rounded so that the ferrule can tilt relative to the housing.

Self-contained fiber optic connector module

A method of forming a round multi-fiber cable assembly is provided which includes the following steps: providing a round multi-fiber cable, a heat shrinkable tube, a tubing, a boot, a crimp tubing, and a multi-fiber connector; threading the heat shrinkable tube onto the multi-fiber cable; stripping off inner and outer jackets of the multi-fiber cable to pre-determined lengths; ribbonizing the fibers of the multi-fiber cable, if necessary; preparing the tubing as required; threading the fibers and strength members of the multi-fiber cable through the tubing; placing the boot and the crimp tubing on the tubing, assembling the multi-fiber connector to the ribbon; crimping the crimp tubing around the tubing, the strength members and the multi-fiber connector; heat shrinking the heat-shrinkable tubing to the round multi-fiber cable and the tubing; and sliding the boot to attach it to the multi-fiber connector to provide a round multi-fiber cable assembly.

Round multi-fiber cable assembly and a method of forming same

A cleaner is provided for cleaning the end surface area of a ferrule of a fiber optic connector. The cleaner includes a housing having a mating portion for mating the cleaner with the connector. A cleaning head is movably mounted on the housing for movement across the end surface area. A motor is mounted on the housing and is coupled to the cleaning head for moving the cleaning head in response to operation of the motor. An air jet is mounted on the housing for directing a stream of a cleaning medium toward the cleaning head to remove residue from the end surface area. An exhaust is provided on the housing for removing and evacuating residue from the end surface area. A plurality of the cleaners are mounted on a dummy circuit board for cleaning the end surface areas of the ferrules of a plurality of fiber optic connectors mounted in a given pattern on a backplane of a chassis.

Cleaner for fiber optic connectors

A fiber optic connector assembly includes an outer connector housing defining an optic axis in a through passage. A first key is disposed in the passage at a given position angularly about the axis. An inner optical fiber plug terminates an optical fiber and is disposed in the passage and includes a second key movably positionable about the periphery of the plug to different selected positions of rotational adjustment for the plug. The second key is fixable at any selected position on the plug and is lockable with the first key on the housing to fix the angular position of the plug relative to the housing and, thereby, fix the rotational position of the optical fiber angularly of the optic axis.

Rotationally adjustable fiber optic connector

A fiber optic connector module includes a ferrule terminated to at least one optical fiber. The ferrule has a rearwardly facing abutment surface. The ferrule is mounted within a housing which includes a forwardly facing abutment surface for engaging the rearwardly facing abutment surface on the ferrule. The forwardly facing abutment surface on the housing is convexly rounded so that the ferrule can tilt relative to the housing.

A fiber optic connector module is provided for assembly at a rear face of a fiber optic connector assembly. The module includes a ferrule terminated to at least one optical fiber. A housing is spaced behind the ferrule and includes a rear end exposed at said rear face of the connector assembly. An extender member is removably attached to the housing at the rear end thereof and extends away from the rear face of the connector assembly for facilitating manipulation of the connector module.

A system is provided for mounting a connecting device to a substrate. A connector housing is located at one side of the substrate, and a threaded fastening nut is engaged on the housing. A threaded fastener is engaged with the opposite side of the substrate and extends therethrough for tightening the nut toward the substrate in response to rotating the fastener. An assembly tool holds the fastening nut against rotation as the fastener is rotated. The tool includes a first portion for engaging at least a part of the housing to properly position the tool. A second portion of the tool engages the fastening nut to prevent rotation thereof. The second portion of the tool is aligned with the fastening nut automatically in response to engaging the first portion with the housing.

System and tool for mounting a connecting device to a substrate

A fiber optic connector assembly includes an outer housing having an interior cavity. A termination module is insertable into the cavity and includes a ferrule for terminating a distal end of at least one optical fiber stub. A base is attached to the ferrule and includes a channel for splicing a proximal end of the optical fiber stub to a fiber end of a fiber optic cable. A cover is positionable onto the base for holding the fiber stub and fiber end in the channel. A clamp is provided for holding the cover onto the base. A latch is provided between the clamp and the outer housing for holding the termination module in the cavity of the housing.

System for terminating optical fibers in a fiber optic connector

A fiber optic connector assembly includes an outer connector housing defining an optic axis. An inner optical fiber plug is mounted in the housing for limited axial movement therein and for rotational movement angularly of the axis. An indexing or locking mechanism is provided between the plug and the housing to hold the plug in selected rotational positions of adjustment angular of the optic axis. Axial movement of the plug within and relative to the housing is effective to disengage the lock or indexing mechanism and allow rotation of the plug. A retainer is selectively movable into engagement with the plug to prevent axial movement of the plug and, thereby, prevent disengagement of the lock or indexing mechanism, thereby fixing the rotational position of the adjustment of the plug.

A method is provided for cross-connecting individual optical fibers of a plurality of fiber optic ribbons and includes the steps of providing first and second substrates having adhesive thereon. Individual optical fibers are routed on the substrates to form at least portions of fiber optic input ribbons and fiber optic output ribbons, with the fibers extending beyond the substrates to define input and output tails. One substrate is positioned on top of another substrate, and a ribbonizing apparatus is used to gather the input and output tails in ribbon form whereupon they can be coated to hold the tails in their ribbon form.

Method and apparatus of cross-connecting optical fibers with layered substrates forming fiber optic ribbons

A method of cross-connecting or reorganizing individual optical fibers of a plurality of fiber optic ribbons include the steps of providing a substrate having an adhesive thereon with a mixing zone within the boundaries thereof. A plurality of individual optical fibers are routed onto the substrate to form a plurality of fiber optic input ribbons, reorganizing the fibers in the mixing zone, and forming a plurality of fiber optic output ribbons. At least some of the output ribbons have fibers from more than one of the input ribbons. The input and output ribbons are coated on the substrate outside the mixing zone to hold the routed fibers in ribbon form, leaving at least portions of the fibers in the mixing zone uncoated. The coated ribbons are stripped from the substrate with the uncoated fibers from the mixing zone being loose. A holding device is placed about at least the uncoated loose fibers between the input and output ribbons.

Method of cross-connecting optical fibers

A fiber optic connector module includes a ferrule terminated to at least one optical fiber. The ferrule includes a front mating end and a rear end. A pin keeper is engaged with the rear end of the ferrule. At least one alignment pin extends from the pin keeper through the ferrule and projects beyond the front mating end of the ferrule for operative association with a complementary connecting device. A pusher member is spaced behind the pin keeper. A spring is sandwiched between the pusher member and the pin keeper. The spring has opposite ends fixed to the pusher member and the pin keeper to hold the entire module together as a self-contained unit.
