An abrasive article can include an abrasive component including a body. The body can include a bond matrix and abrasive particles contained in the bond matrix. In an embodiment, the body can include an interconnected phase extending through at least a portion of the bond matrix. The body can include a discontinuous phase including a plurality of discrete members. At least one of the discrete member can include a macroscopic pore. In another embodiment, the body can include a porosity of at least 15 vol % for a total volume of the body.

Abrasive article and method of forming

A process can include forming at least one precursor abrasive component on a core and infiltrating at least a portion of the precursor abrasive component. The precursor abrasive component can include a body including a metal bond matrix and abrasive particles. Infiltrating can be performed after forming the precursor abrasive component with an infiltrant material. The infiltrant material can include a metal element, an alloy or a combination thereof. In an embodiment, forming at least one precursor abrasive component can include simultaneously joining the precursor abrasive component to the core.

Process of forming an abrasive article

An abrasive segment can include an inner segment portion, an outer segment portion, and a central segment portion connected thereto. The inner segment portion can include an inner circumferential wall and an outer circumferential wall. Leading and trailing radial sidewalls can extend between the inner circumferential wall and the outer circumferential wall opposite each other. The outer segment portion can include an inner circumferential wall and an outer circumferential wall. Leading and trailing radial sidewalls can extend between the inner circumferential wall and the outer circumferential wall opposite each other. The central segment portion can include a leading radial sidewall and a trailing radial sidewall. The leading radial sidewall of the central segment portion can establish an acute angle, &#x3b1;, with respect to the outer circumferential wall of the inner segment portion and an obtuse angle, &#x3b2;, with respect the inner circumferential wall of the outer segment portion.

Abrasive article having shaped segments

An abrasive article includes a carrier element, an abrasive component, and a bonding region between the abrasive component and the carrier element. The abrasive component includes abrasive particles bound in a metal matrix. The abrasive component further includes a network of interconnected pores substantially filled with an infiltrant. The infiltrant has an infiltrant composition containing at least one metal element. The bonding region includes a bonding metal having a bonding metal composition containing at least one metal element. The bonding region is a region distinct from the carrier element and is a separate phase from the carrier element. An elemental weight percent difference is the absolute value of the difference in weight content of each element contained in the bonding metal composition relative to the infiltrant composition. The elemental weight percent difference between the bonding metal composition and the infiltrant composition does not exceed 20 weight percent.

Abrasive tools having a continuous metal phase for bonding an abrasive component to a carrier

An abrasive article includes a base, an abrasive member comprising three distinct phases bonded to each other including abrasive particles, a metal matrix, and an infiltrant. The abrasive article further includes a backing region between the abrasive member and the base, wherein the backing region comprises a laser welded bond joint.

Abrasive article incorporating an infiltrated abrasive segment

A device for securing a plurality of abrasive segments to an abrasive tool is provided. The abrasive tool includes a rotatable body with an outer diameter and an inner diameter. The device includes a carrier element that includes a first portion that accommodates the plurality of abrasive segments and a second portion opposite from the first portion that attaches to the rotatable body. The second portion includes a shoulder extending therefrom that facilitates centering with the rotatable body.

Abrasive tip for abrasive tool and method for forming and replacing thereof

An abrasive article including a base having an annular shape defining a central opening; and a mounting assembly coupled to the base, wherein a portion of the mounting assembly is under a compressive force, and a grinding segment coupled to the mounting member.
