Embodiments herein relate to implantable medical devices including a power subunit with a first biocompatible electrically conductive shell configured for direct contact with an in vivo environment. In some embodiments a lithium anode can be disposed within the first biocompatible electrically conductive shell in direct electrical communication with a feedthrough pin, wherein the feedthrough pin is electrically isolated from the first biocompatible electrically conductive shell. A cathode can also be disposed within the first biocompatible electrically conductive shell and can be in direct electrical communication with the first biocompatible electrically conductive shell. The first biocompatible electrically conductive shell has a positive electrical potential. The implantable medical device further includes an electronics control subunit with a control circuit disposed within a second biocompatible electrically conductive shell. A battery includes a battery case including a housing having side walls defining a first open end and a second open end, the battery case including a separate top cover to cover the first open end of the housing and a separate bottom cover to cover the second open end of the housing; a first electrode located within the case; a second electrode located within the case; a first terminal coupled to the first electrode and exposed outside the case; and a second terminal coupled to the second electrode and exposed outside the case.

Embodiments herein relate to simplified and space efficient designs for multiplate batteries. In an embodiment, an electrochemical cell is included having an multiplate anode and multiplate cathode with a separator to provide physical separation between anode and cathode plates. Anode collectors can be in electrical communication with each anode plate and anode tabs in electrical communication with each anode collector. Cathode collectors can be in electrical communication with each cathode plate and cathode tabs in electrical communication with each cathode collector. An anode busbar can interconnect the plurality of anode tabs in parallel and a cathode busbar can interconnect the plurality of cathode tabs in parallel. The cathode busbar can be oriented such that the cathode tabs are not disposed between the cathode busbar and the plurality of cathode plates. Other embodiments are also included herein.

A method includes treating a CFx material with a base during the formation of a CFx cathode; and assembling the treated CFx material into a cathode electrode and assembling the cathode electrode with a lithium anode electrode and an electrolyte into a cell.

One example includes a battery case sealed to retain electrolyte, an electrode disposed in the battery case, the electrode comprising a current collector formed of a framework defining open areas disposed along three axes ('framework'), the framework electrically conductive, with active material disposed in the open areas; a conductor electrically coupled to the electrode and sealingly extending through the battery case to a terminal disposed on an exterior of the battery case, a further electrode disposed in the battery case, a separator disposed between the electrode and the further electrode and a further terminal disposed on the exterior of the battery case and in electrical communication with the further electrode, with the terminal and the further terminal electrically isolated from one another.

An anode may extend through at least some of the plurality of cathode pellets. A lid may be attached to the housing.

The present subject matter provides apparatus and methods for controlling lithium deposition during manufacture of implantable medical device batteries. A method includes processing materials to form the battery and performing a discharge conditioning process step. The discharge conditioning process step includes using a reduced discharge load and applying a discharge load intermittently to decrease formation of lithium deposits on negatively charged surfaces within the battery.

One embodiment of the present subject matter includes a battery having a stack of substantially planar battery electrodes, the stack including a first electrode including a first tab, and a second electrode including a second tab, with the first tab electrically connected to the second tab. The embodiment includes a first separator layer and a second separator layer sandwiching the first electrode, with the edges of the first separator layer and the second separator connected with a weld, the first separator layer and the second separator layer defining an interior space in which the first electrode is disposed, with the first tab extending outside the interior space. The embodiment includes a battery housing having electrolyte disposed therein, the housing including at least a first aperture and a feedthrough aperture; a lid conformed and sealed to the first aperture; and a feedthrough conformed and sealed to the feedthrough aperture.

A primary lithium cell having an anode comprising lithium and a cathode comprising electrochemically active material selected from copper vanadates having the formula CuVOor CuVOor mixtures thereof. The cathode can include a manganese dioxide in admixture with said copper vanadates. The cell exhibits higher capacity and energy output than conventional lithium cells having an anode comprising lithium and cathode comprising manganese dioxide.
