A method, system, and computer program for adaptively streaming multimedia content is disclosed. An adaptive stream manager monitors at least one parameter of a user terminal. The adaptive stream manager monitors at least one parameter of the user terminal and predicting a future value of at least one parameter of the user terminal. The adaptive stream manager also selects a target characteristic, based on the predicted future value of the at least one parameter of the user terminal, and requests a multimedia segment having the target characteristic from a media server.

Techniques for managing resources at a wireless device are described. In one aspect, the wireless device controls applications based on resource demands and available resources. Processing demands by the applications may be monitored, and at least one of the applications may be controlled based on the processing demands and a maximum processing capacity of a processing unit executing the applications. A data application may be controlled by reducing the amount of data exchanged by the application when high processing demands are detected, and vice versa. In another aspect, the wireless device varies resource capacity to match resources demands. The processing capacity of the processing unit may be adjusted based on the processing demands. Higher clock frequency may be selected for the processing unit when the processing demands exceed a high threshold, and lower clock frequency may be selected when processing demands fall below a low threshold.

Method and apparatus for managing resources at a wireless device

A method of establishing transmission control protocol (TCP) connections is disclosed and may include receiving a uniform resource locator (URL) as part of a hyper text transfer protocol (HTTP) request. Further, the method may include searching a host database with the URL and determining whether host data for the URL is available. The method may also include performing a domain name service (DNS) lookup for a URL host and for one or more sub-resource hosts, wherein all DNS lookups are performed in parallel at substantially the same time, when host data for the URL is available.

When past performance indicates an unlikelihood of completing the transmission of the data, then the discontinuous mode is maintained without data transmission.

Methods and apparatus are presented for extending the protocol synchronization period between a PPP client and a PPP server, wherein the PPP server is located on a wireless communication device. In one aspect, the PPP server generates and sends an IPCP Configure-Nak message to the PPP client whenever the PPP client sends an IPCP Configure-Request message, wherein an arbitrary non-zero value is deliberately sent as the primary DNS address, the secondary DNS address, the primary WINS address, or the secondary WINS address is sent in the IPCP Configure-Nak message. Techniques to test a wireless communication link using configurable channels and rates. A W-Markov test service may be invoked to test and/or verify the performance of the downlink and/or uplink using at least one transport channel for each link. Each transport channel may be individually configured. The W-Markov test service supports generation of test data based on a defined data sequence or a pseudo-random number generator. The testing may be performed based on a particular deterministic or pseudo-random activity model. For voice call testing, a first-order Markov model may be used to model voice activity and to select the rate to use for each transmission time interval (TTI). For Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR), testing may be performed based on configurable AMR rates and silence descriptor (SID) types. The test data generation processes are synchronized between the transmitter and receiver. Bit, frame, and/or block error rates and other statistics may be collected.

Method and apparatus for testing a wireless link using configurable channels and rates

Techniques to test a wireless communication link. A traffic channel is tested via a test data service option (TDSO) that may be negotiated and connected similar to other services. Test parameters values may be proposed, accepted or rejected, and negotiated. Test data for a channel is generated based on a defined data pattern or a pseudo-random number generator. Sufficient test data may be generated based on the generator for a test interval, stored to a buffer, and thereafter retrieved from a particular section of the buffer to form data block(s) for each 'active' frame. The traffic channel may be tested using discontinuous transmission. A two-state Markov chain determines whether or not to transmit test data for each frame. The average frame activity and average burst length are defined by selecting the probabilities for transitioning between the ON/OFF states of the Markov chain, which may be driven by a second generator.
