A direct conversion satellite tuner is fully integrated on a common substrate. The integrated tuner receives an RF signal having a plurality of channels and down-converts a selected channel directly to baseband for further processing. The integrated tuner includes on-chip local oscillator generation, tunable baseband filters, and DC Offset cancellation. The integrated tuner can be implemented in a completely differential I/Q configuration for improved electrical performance. The entire direct conversion satellite tuner can be fabricated on a single semiconductor substrate using standard CMOS processing, with minimal off-chip components. The tuner configuration described herein is not limited to processing TV signals, and can be utilized to down-convert other RF signals to an IF frequency or baseband.

Integrated direct conversion satellite tuner

A transmitter for a cellular phone comprising an antenna and being operable at a first radio frequency band and a second radio frequency band is disclosed. In one embodiment, the transmitter includes a first power amplifier and a second power amplifier. The first power amplifier has a first input for a first signal at the first radio frequency band and a first output for an amplified first signal, the first output being connected to the antenna. The second power amplifier has a second input for a second signal at the second radio frequency band and a second output for an amplified second signal, the second output being connected to the antenna. The transmitter further comprises a single control module which is associated with the first and second outputs of the power amplifiers and comprises a logarithmic detector. The control module generates a control signal which is a function of an amplified signal and a reference signal in order to control the two power amplifiers.

A transmitter for a cellular phone comprising an antenna and being operable at a first radio frequency band and a second radio frequency band is disclosed. The transmitter comprises a first power amplifier and a second power amplifier, one of which is active at a time. The first power amplifier has an input for a first signal at the first radio frequency band, an input for a first control signal and a first output for an amplified first signal. The first output is connectable to the antenna. The second power amplifier has an input for a second signal at the second radio frequency band, an input for a second control signal and a second output for an amplified second signal. The second output is connectable to the antenna. The transmitter further comprises a single control module associated with the first and second outputs of the power amplifiers. The control module generates a control signal for the active power amplifier. The control signal forms part of a feedback control loop, and is a function of the amplified signal output from the active power amplifier and a reference signal which defines a desired characteristic of the amplified signal.

An integrated circuit formed within a substrate has a first circuit section and an active noise cancellation section located at least between the first circuit section and a noise source. The active noise cancellation section is coupled to the substrate and injects counter-charge into the substrate to isolate the first circuit section from noise produced by the noise source.

An inductive structure is provided which displays an increased self-inductance and improved Q at high frequencies. The improvement resides in the disposition proximate the inductive structure an amount of magnetic material to increase mutual inductance between adjacent portions of the inductor's conductive path with current flow.

An inductive structure for use in high frequency integrated circuits is provided. A conductive path forming the structure is arranged so extra conductive material is located at portions of the cross-section of the conductive path where current tends to flow at high frequency.

An amplification arrangement comprises an electrical circuit that includes a voltage divider having a plurality of resistors connected in series between a signal output and a reference potential source, and a plurality of parallel branches each extending between a common main input and a different one of a plurality of voltage divider nodes situated between the resistors. A multiplier is interposed in each of the branches and has a multiplication factor that is connected through a switching device with an electrical signal source. The switching device routes the electrical signals from the source to the different multipliers in dependence on the magnitude of a gain control signal supplied to its control input and indicative of the area of the gain range in which the arrangement is to operate at that time to obtain the desired signal amplification.

Radio frequency amplifier

A DC-coupled multistage operational amplifier, the participation of the multiple stages of which, in defining the effective gain of the amplifier, is frequency dependent, such that high frequency signals are amplified by a single high speed stage and coupled directly to an output port. Low frequency signals, on the other hand, are coupled through both the high speed stage and a low frequency precision stage connected in cascade with the high speed stage. The gains of the respective high speed and low frequency precision amplifier stages are such that amplification of a high frequency input signal applied to an input port is effectively defined by the gain of the high speed first amplifier stage, so that an amplified high ferquency output signal derived from an output port is effectively derived directly from the output of the high speed amplifier stage. On the other hand, amplification of a low frequency input signal applied to the input port is effectively defined by the total gain of a cascaded signal coupling path through each of the high speed and low frequency precision amplifier stages.
