A tape head adapted to 32-, 64-, and 128-channel operation is provided. A plurality of elements is provided, numbering N, comprising first and second sets of 64 evenly-spaced elements, each set comprising at least a first element and a last element. A plurality of servos is provided, comprising at least a first through sixth servo. The 64 evenly-spaced elements of each set are separated by an element pitch (W). The evenly-spaced elements and plurality of servos are spaced as set forth herein.

Tape head wafer design for multiple formats using same tape

Provided are devices for use in a magnetic tape head, a magnetic tape head, and methods for forming the same. A device includes a chiplet including at least one of a reader and a writer. The device also includes an electromagnetic interference (EMI) shield embedded in the chiplet. The EMI shield is configured to inhibit electromagnetic interference during operation of the at least one of the reader and the writer.

In an approach to improve write transducers a write transducer for recording data on a magnetic media is disclosed. The write transducer comprises a first pole piece. The write transducer further comprises a second pole piece. The first pole piece and the second pole piece are arranged in such a way, that a write gap is formed between the first pole piece and the second pole piece. A longitudinal axis is defined between opposite ends of the write gap. A length of the write gap along the longitudinal axis varies in the direction transverse to the longitudinal axis.

Provided are a computer program product, device, system, and method for single data band data storage. In one embodiment, a tape head module has an array of four servo transducer elements for each servo band of a tape and an array of reader/writer transducer elements extending over most of the width of the tape. In another embodiment, a data storage tape has a top servo band positioned adjacent a top edge guard band of the tape, a bottom servo band positioned adjacent a bottom edge guard band of the tape, and a single data band positioned between the top and bottom servo bands and configured to receive tracks of data written by a tape head wherein the single data band width extends over most of the tape width.

A method, in accordance with one aspect of the present invention, includes writing, by a tape drive, data tracks to a data band of a magnetic tape having servo bands flanking the data band, the writing being performed using a magnetic head that is not designed for a format of the magnetic tape. An effective pitch of servo readers of the magnetic head used simultaneously during the writing matches a servo reader pitch specification of the format of the magnetic tape. An average effective pitch of write transducers of the magnetic head is greater than a data track pitch specification of the format of the magnetic tape.

Provided are a magnetic tape head, a magnetic tape drive, and a computational device in which the magnetic tape head is comprised of a plurality of modules comprising reader modules and writer modules, and a plurality of elements, wherein a total of shifts of selected elements of the plurality of elements that are shifted add up to a desired total shift to realign the plurality of modules, such that a median head span of each module type matches as close as possible to a desired value of a head span for all module types including the reader modules and the writer modules and wherein the head span is shifted at a wafer level.

In one aspect of the present disclosure, the degree of side erasure occurring in neighboring tracks is controlled by controlling the skew angle of the tape head, relative to the longitudinal direction of motion of the tape past the head as a track is written. In one embodiment, the tape head is rotated relative to the longitudinal direction of tape travel, and the trailing edge of the tape head which forms an acute angle with the edge of a track being written, is used for writing tracks at a desired track pitch. Other aspects and advantages may be provided, depending upon the particular application.

A data storage library system includes a data storage library, at least one environmental conditioning unit, at least one data storage drive retained within the data storage library, and at least one access door for providing access to an interior portion of the data storage library. The system also includes a library controller, wherein the library controller is configured to initiate a service mode prior to and during a service procedure performed within the data storage library, and further wherein at least one operational state within the at least one data storage drive is changed during the service mode. The change in the at least one operational state may be, for example, an increase in temperature within the at least one data storage drive, or the insertion of a data storage cartridge into the at least one data storage drive during the service mode.

An apparatus includes an array of write transducers. Each write transducer includes a lower yoke, a lower write pole piece comprising a lower base layer in magnetic communication with the lower yoke and a lower high moment layer above the lower base layer. Each write transducer includes a write gap above the lower write pole piece and an upper write pole piece above the write gap. The upper write pole piece includes an upper high moment layer above the write gap and an upper base layer above the upper high moment layer. Each write transducer includes an upper yoke above the upper base layer. A media facing side of the lower pole piece and at least a portion of a media facing side of the upper pole piece extend along a plane and the remainder of the media facing side of the upper pole piece is recessed from the plane.

A data storage library system includes a data storage library having at least one library frame, at least one environmental conditioning unit associated with the data storage library and configured to control one or more interior environmental conditions within the at least one library frame, and at least one access door for providing access to an interior portion of the at least one library frame. The system also includes a library controller configured to initiate a service mode prior to and/or during a service procedure performed within the at least one library frame, wherein the service mode comprises configuring the at least one environmental conditioning unit to adjust the one or more environmental conditions within the at least one library frame toward one or more exterior environmental conditions outside of the data storage library. Optionally, a lock and/or indicator (visual and/or audible) may control access to the interior of the library frames. Associated methods of servicing a data storage library are disclosed.

Embodiments of the present disclosure related to automated static control. A set of static sensor data may be obtained from two or more static sensors. The set of static sensor data may be analyzed to determine whether a static condition exists. In response to a determination that a static condition exists, a set of mobile static unit data may be collected from one or more mobile static units. The set of mobile static unit data may be analyzed to select a mobile static unit of the one or more mobile static units. An action may be transmitted to the selected mobile static unit, and the selected mobile static unit may be deployed to mitigate the static condition.

A computer-implemented method to detect a damaged tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) sensor includes applying current at at least two different current values to the TMR sensor and measuring a resistance, R, at each current value. The method also includes measuring a slope in resistance vs. bias current, RD, using the measured resistances Rand the at least two different current values. The method includes calculating a &#x394;RDvalue as a difference between the RDvalue and an expected value, RD, for the TMR sensor. The method includes determining whether the &#x394;RDvalue is within a predefined range. In response to determining that the &#x394;RDvalue is outside the predefined range, the method includes outputting an indication that the TMR sensor fails. In response to determining that the &#x394;RDvalue is within the predefined range, the method includes outputting an indication that the TMR sensor passes.

Detecting damaged TMR sensors using bias currents and outliers

A computer-implemented method includes, by one or more processors in electronic communication with a tunneling magnetoresistive sensor, wherein the tunneling magnetoresistive sensor is a component of a magnetic storage drive configured to read magnetic data from a magnetic storage medium, detecting a short across the tunneling magnetoresistive sensor, measuring a change in resistance of the tunneling magnetoresistive sensor, measuring a change in voltage amplitude for the tunneling magnetoresistive sensor, and dividing said change in voltage amplitude by said change in resistance to yield a ratio. The computer-implemented method further includes, responsive to the ratio being greater than a predetermined ratio threshold, determining that the short is caused by a magnetic shunt. A corresponding computer program product and computer system are also disclosed.
