A base station system includes a base station device (), a wireless transmission device () and a data transfer device (), each of which can be installed outdoors. Enclosures (and) of the devices (-) each provide a degree of protection from water and dust ingress necessary for being installed outdoors. The enclosure () of the base station device () accommodates electronic equipment () functioning as a base station. The enclosure () of the wireless transmission device () accommodates electronic equipment () functioning as a radio station to perform wireless transmission with the other device for connecting the base station device () to a mobile backhaul network. The enclosure () of the data transfer device () accommodates electronic equipment () functioning as a router or a switch to transfer data packets or data flames between the base station device () and the wireless transmission device (). This eliminates the need for construction of a building/shelter to install the base station system.

Base station system

Coefficient controllers () control weighting coefficients for tapped transversal filters used in interference compensators () on the basis of transmission power control information from reception determination devices () on the V polarization side and H polarization side. The interference compensators () control the normal compensation ranges of the interference compensators () and adjust interference compensation amounts on the basis of the weighting coefficients from the coefficient controllers ().

In a transversal filter for filtering an input signal (IN) into an output signal (OUT) in response to first through third tap gains (C.sub.-1, C.sub.0, C.sub.1), the transversal filter comprises a serial-parallel converter (40) for converting the input signal into first and second parallel converted signals. Connected to the serial-parallel converter, a delay circuit (10) has first through fourth taps (11-14) and comprises a plurality of delay units (16, 17) each of which is connected between two taps selected from the first through the fourth taps. Each of the delay units provides twice a unit delay which is substantially equal to a reciprocal of an input data rate of the input signal. The first through the fourth taps of the delay circuit produce first through fourth tap signals, respectively. First and second calculation circuits (31, 32) carry out a calculation operation on three tap signals selected from the first through the fourth tap signals using the first through the third tap gains to produce first and second calculation result signals, respectively. Connected to the first and the second calculation circuits, a parallel-serial converter (35) couples the first and the second calculation result signals to produce the output signal.

A mail sorting apparatus includes a video signal conversion section for photoelectrically converting and quantizing characters, codes, and the like on a mail item into a video signal, a blank area detection section for detecting a blank area where characters, codes, and the like are not described on the basis of the video signal output from the video signal conversion section, a printing area designation section for designating a bar code printing area in the blank area detected by the blank area detection section, and a bar code printing section for printing a bar code corresponding to an address of the mail item on the printing area designated by the printing area designation section. Further, the printing area designation section designates the bar code printing area from a blank area obtained by excluding a window area detected by a window position detection section from the blank area detected by the blank area detection section.

A character recognizing method includes steps of detecting a character using an end of the character line as a start point, normalizing the detected character, comparing the normalized value with a predetermined standard pattern, and detecting a point having a minimum distance difference from the standard pattern as a segmentation point between neighboring characters.

A device for use in processing a device input signal carrying a digital symbol sequence, a reception filter filters the device input signal and produces a filter output signal having a high order curvature distortion. The high order curvature distortion results in a predetermined frequency band from adjacent interference on the predetermined frequency band by other frequency bands adjacant to the predetermined frequency band. Responsive to the filter output signal, an adaptive amplitude equalizing unit equalizes the high order curvature distortion and produces as a first equalized signal. When the device input signal decreases, the adaptive amplitude equalizing unit overestimates the high order curvature distortion to produce intersymbol interference because of appropriately suppressing the other freqency bands by the reception filter. In order to resolve the problem, an adaptive transversal equalizing unit is connected to the adaptive amplitude equalizing unit and equalizes the intersymbol interference along a time axis of the first equalized signal to produce an output signal with the curvature distortion and the intersymbol interference suppressed.

A character recognition apparatus, for use with an input character pattern and a dictionary of stored character patterns that are blocked into categories, all the patterns having a quantifiable format, in which a judging circuit performs a comparison of the patterns based on the quantifiable format and determines whether the quantified difference exceeds a threshold value in order to determine whether the input and stored character patterns match. The threshold is reduced, as lower mismatch quantities are found for a given character, and when a comparison exceeds the threshold, thereby indicating a mismatch, a new stored character is examined. As among all stored characters that have passed the threshold test, the one with the lowest mismatch quantity is selected as the recognized character.
