An emitting device in an organic electroluminescent device is disclosed, in which a lower electrode pattern is formed on a substrate, an emitting layer pattern is formed on the lower electrode pattern, and a transparent electrode is formed on the emitting layer pattern and an emitting body having a structure in which an organic thin film emits light when an application current is applied to it. The pattern of the transparent electrode completely covers and is larger than that of the lower electrode. The pattern of the transparent electrode is formed over the entire area of the pattern of the lower electrode.

A conventional liquid crystal display comprises a number of components, so that a manufacturing cost cannot be reduced. Furthermore, a large-area substrate has problems in shipping. According to this invention, a liquid-crystal panel is prepared by forming individual optically functional films, a TFT device and a light-emitting device on a long thin film and then laminating the film by a transfer process. A base film to be a substrate in a liquid-crystal panel preferably has a thickness of 10 &#x3bc;m to 200 &#x3bc;m, a curvature radius of 40 mm or less as a measure of flexibility and a coefficient of thermal expansion of 50 ppm/&#xb0; C. or less. Furthermore, it more preferably gives a variation of &#xb1;5% or less in mechanical and optical properties to a thermal history at 200&#xb0; C.

A color image sensor sequentially acquires a plurality of fingerprint images when a finger is pressed against the detector surface. A color information extraction unit detects the finger color in synchronization with the input of the plurality of fingerprint images. An areal information extraction unit detects a physical quantity representing the pressure applied by the finger to the color image sensor when the plurality of fingerprint images are acquired, particularly, the quantity related with the area of the finger in contact with the detector surface. A living body identification unit determines whether the finger is a live or dead one by the analysis of correlation between the physical quantity and the finger color. According to this configuration, even if the finger color does not change much, it is possible to distinguish living bodies from dead ones if there is a sufficient correlation with information such as the area of the fingerprint that reflects the finger pressure. The thickness of the fingerprint input unit is approximately 1&#x2013;2 mm, determined by the sum of the thickness of the planar light source and that of the color image sensor.

To provide a diffractive optical element that allows simplification of a manufacturing process and reduction in manufacturing costs. A diffractive optical element includes a first transparent substrate having a pair of transparent interdigitated electrodes facing each other formed on its surface, a second transparent substrate, and a liquid crystal sandwiched therebetween. Alignment layers are formed on surfaces of the first and second transparent substrates facing the liquid crystal. Pads are provided on the transparent electrodes and electrically connected to an outside. A seal material and a liquid crystal sealing port are provided on the first transparent substrate. The seal material is formed into a partly cut rectangle, and the liquid crystal sealing port is formed at the cut portion of the rectangular seal material.

A light emitting device and the production method thereof are provided, which are characterized by low manufacturing costs, low power consumption, and high luminous efficiency. The production method comprises processes of forming a transparent electrode layer above a transparent substrate in order to supply current to a luminous material layer, forming the luminous material layer emitting light by supplying the current thereto on the transparent electrode layer, and forming a reflecting electrode layer on the luminous material layer in order to supply current to the luminous material layer. A plurality of opening is formed in the transparent electrode layer with a predetermined pattern. By the openings, slope sections are formed in the luminous material layer and the reflecting electrode layer. Thereby, it is possible to increase the luminous efficiency of the light emitting device.

To provide a fingerprint input device including a collected fiber member that is brought into intimate contact with a fingerprint surface of a finger, a planar light source for illuminating said fingerprint surface, and a two-dimensional image sensor for detecting a light reflected from the fingerprint surface and a light scattered in the finger and emitted from the fingerprint surface, the two-dimensional image sensor having a plurality of photoelectric conversion element arranged two-dimensionally on a substrate. The fingerprint input device detects a fingerprint image and a plethysmogram or acceleration plethysmogram by switching between a mode, in which electric signals produced in the plurality of photoelectric conversion elements are output simultaneously, and a mode, in which electric signals produced in the plurality of photoelectric conversion elements are output sequentially. Thus, the fingerprint input device having a simple configuration can detect the fingerprint image or the plethysmogram with high precision.

A waveguide array is formed by patterning a photosensitive resin formed on a supporting substrate having a light absorbing layer. A light extracting section extracts light at the same time form a predetermined selected region of the plural light emitting elements. The light extracting section also provides an antireflection layer on the surface facing to an observer. The extracting efficiency at the light extracting section is corrected corresponding to a light loss in the waveguide array. The light extracting section uses an optical material whose refractive index is changed by an external electric field.
